Frasier Island

Rate this book
Seasoned novelist Susan Page Davis takes readers on an exciting military adventure where fear meets faith and weakness is exchanged for unexpected strength.

After specialized underwater training, Ensign Rachel Whitney is posted to a remote island in the North Pacific, a tiny scrap of rock guarding a highly classified secret. She could love her new assignment if her commanding officer, Lt. George Hudson, weren’t so obstinate—and a bit distrustful.

Despite George’s first reaction to her presence on the island, Rachel sets out to prove she is perfect for the job. She doesn’t dream of being a heroine or falling in love, but months later, when word leaks out about the prize they are guarding, Rachel and George have few resources besides each other and their faith in God to foil an enemy attack that could endanger all of America.

FROM AUTHOR'S WEBSITE: I'm a native of central Maine, and grew up on a small farm with a wonderful mom and dad, three sisters and a brother. Most of my books take place in small towns, many of them in Maine.

My husband, Jim, and I moved to his birth state, Oregon, for a while after we were married, but decided to move back to Maine and be near my family. It allowed our six children to grow up feeling close to their cousins and grandparents, and some of Jim's family have even moved to Maine!

Our children are all home-schooled. When Jim retired from his vocation as an editor at a daily newspaper, we moved from Maine to Kentucky.

I've always loved reading, history, and horses. These things come together in several of my historical books.
Another longtime hobby of mine is genealogy, which has led me down many fascinating paths. I'm proud to be a DAR member! Some of Jim's and my quirkier ancestors have inspired fictional characters.

For many years I worked for the Central Maine Morning Sentinel as a freelancer. This experience was a great help in developing fictional characters and writing realistic scenes. I also published nonfiction articles in several magazines and had several short stories appear in Woman's World, Grit, and Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine.

I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed this!

The characters are really intriguing, particularly George, even if he did drive me crazy for parts of the book. But Pierre was what made this story for me! He was just such an awesome character! I love his and Rachel's relationship. Yay for platonic relationships! <3

The storyline kept me glued to my seat, especially towards the end. I loved how it was part survival story, part suspense novel.

Overall, I really enjoyed it!

CONTENT NOTE: Recommended for ages 16+ for romance and thematic material.

This book was amazing. I was into it from the first page and could hardly put it down. I have a passion for the military so when I saw that there was a Christian fiction series about the military, I jumped to the opportunity to read it. I was not disappointed. This book was had so much in it that it just grips you and doesn't release you until you have finished reading. I was very happy/sad with the ending. I wanted more and I know that there is a book two but my library doesn't have it so I have to wait till I move to read the second book. :(

The romance in this book wasn't really that big but it still was there and really good. I loved Rachel and George together. Their relationship was a Elizabeth and Darcy relationship which I love. I really enjoyed their character arcs too and how they both grew as characters and as a couple.

The Christian themes in this book was really enjoyable to read too. I loved seeing how mature Rachel and George grew in their faith over the course of the book. It was awesome to read and it wasn't unrealistic either.

The suspense towards the end of the book though had me on my seat. I couldn't put it down. It was a good thing I stopped when I did last night otherwise I would have been up all night.

Pierce was another thing that made this book amazing. He probably was one of my favorite characters. His and Rachel's relationship was really enjoyable to read about and I just really loved him. I am super excited to read about him in the next book!

This book is a great read for anyone who likes: action, suspense, Christian themes, the military, and romance.

I have no idea why, but I LOVE this book.

I loved the plot. To me it was captivating. I could barely put the book down, in fact a may have not put the book down.
I loved Ensign Rachel Whitney! To me she is complete role-model material. When a character inspires you you know it's good writing.
Lt. George Hudson was even cool. The side characters were hilarious and I felt sad when one of them left.
Even the romance is really sweet and touching, (or at least I thought so).

I just loved pretty much everything about this book. I can't just pinpoint one thing. In generally I tend to read funny, slightly comedic novels, this is not at all one of those books. However somehow I love this book anyways!
If you are looking at this book and debating whether to read it or not please just read it. It's at least worth a shot. Besides I just gave it a glowing review so you should listen to me. :D

This has military, romance but mainly suspense/thriller here.
(the f——- discovery stretched my credibility too much) That kept it from 5 stars.

Wow!

I’m not much for military stories, but this was a page turner. I could hardly wait to pick it up again to read. There were so many wonderful characters in the story and I couldn’t help but feel so proud of Ensign Whitney for facing her fears and pushing ahead to fulfill her duty. Pierre was a wonderful friend, confidant, and encourager to both Hudson and Whitney. The action at the end kept my head spinning, so unbelievable, but I was thrilled at the ending of the book. Wonderful writing!

Wow. What a great suspenseful story. Found two typos, otherwise terrific. Characters are well written and this is done well. Definitely looking to read more like this from this author! Great use of Bible verses and prayer.

Ensign Rachel Whitney is thrilled when she is assigned to Frasier Island, a remote, highly classified naval outpost under the command of the legendary Lieutenant George Hudson. With a burning drive to succeed born out of past trauma, Rachel's quick temper flares when she encounters immediate hostility from her enigmatic commanding officer. Armed with her newly-minted Christian faith, she determines to acquit herself well and attempts to stifle her unwanted attraction to George, in spite of the prickling tension that exisits between them. Unbeknownst to Rachel, George has scars of his own that led him to embrace the isolation offered by the Frasier Island assignment - it was the perfect chance for him to retreat from painful memories and risky relationships. However, when word of the precious secret the Navy guards on Frasier leaks out and hostile forces begin to threaten their lonely outpost, Rachel and George must set aside their differences and learn to trust each other in order to survive.

I began reading Frasier Island with some trepidation -- after all, Dee Henderson set the standard high for military-themed romantic suspense novels with her Uncommon Heroes series. However, Susan Page Davis has proven more than equal to the challenge -- Frasier Island announces Davis's presence in the romantic suspense genre with an explosive bang. She expertly balances the "romance" and "suspense" elements of the story, providing an altogether satisfying read. The plot crackles with suspense, but what kept me turning pages were the well-drawn characters. Rachel and George are so believably real and authentic, their every motivation and reaction credible, that they practically leap living and breathing from the page. Their actions, reactions, and motivations are clearly and realistically established. It's impossible not to become emotionally invested in these two and their budding relationship. Their romance is beautifully told and well-developed. The faith element is, for the most part, incorporated extremely well into narrative. That said, I would have liked seeing a little more of a "pre-Christian" Rachel as I think establishing that groundwork would have added a little welcome depth to her faith journey. But that's a relatively minor caveat in this otherwise fast-paced, enjoyable read. Highly recommended. The sequel, Finding Marie, releases in September.

Rachel Whitney has jut been posted to a remote Pacific island - where she hopes to learn from her commanding officer, Lt. George Hudson. There are only 3 people posted on the island, so when George and Rachel get off on the wrong foot, everyone is uncomfortable.

George is still grieving his late wife when Rachel arrives. The chemistry between them is undeniable, no matter how much he wishes to ignore it. When events escalate, George is forced to admit his feelings. But will he and Rachel get through the danger alive?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The technical Naval aspects were handled in a way that kept the plot believable, despite the fact there's a completely fictitious material key to the whole thing. Most of all, I like Rachel - she's strong but feminine, has had some hard knocks but isn't letting that hold her back. She's a new Christian, but there's nothing preachy about this novel. Both Rachel and George go through spiritual growth that is very realistic with true-life Christians.

I highly recommend this book and I'm looking forward to reading more books by Susan Page Davis.

***********SPOILERS**********

I read Frasier Island last night and was somewhat disappointed.

The military side of things was a great story line to follow along with. The plot was one that kept me intrigued through the end. There were some military inaccuracies but it's a fiction story so they can absolutely be overlooked.

The romance side however left much to be desired in my opinion. The relationship between George Hudson and Rachel Whitney lacked development and realism. It didn't make sense that George has to state "He won't fall in love with her" when she first arrives at Frasier Island...he SHOULDN'T fall in love with her, he's her superior officer and he JUST met her! It just seemed rushed that they went from barely talking on a professional level, let alone a friendship level to married in just a few weeks. This book could have been much better if there was more development and interaction of their characters relationship.

All in all, Frasier Island is a book that I'm planning to keep around but there are other things I'd read again before re-reading this book.

Frasier Island was an interesting setting that was distinctively military. Ensign Rachel Whitney is sent to Frasier Island to serve in a capacity for which she has been well trained. She lives on this remote island with only two other personnel, both men. She has to work to earn the respect of Lt. George Hudson who doesn't think women should be stationed in these close quarters with men. Before coming to the island, Rachel has great respect for George's abilities, but after meeting him, she feels he hates her. Both are recovering from heart-breaking experiences in the past, and begin their relationship with anger and misunderstanding. They have to learn to see past the surface of each other to what is going on inside.

I enjoyed this book which was clearly Christian. The only drawback I saw was that the romantic feelings between the two Christians really began before they had a clear knowledge that the other one was a Christian or not, and the spiritual condition seemed less important than it should have been in their relationship. I felt they moved to a committed relationship too quickly, without knowing each other better.

This is the first book in several months that I was reading and just didn't want to stop. I've always liked Susan Page Davis, but she has done "extra good" with this story.

Rachel, George, and Pierre are a unit on a very small island guarding something very few people know about. Rachel and Pierre (engaged to Marie) get along great, like brother and sister. George is another thing. Rachel has hero-worshipped George from afar, and now, getting to work with him is a dream come true - until they meet. George is here to do his duty and to recover from the death of his wife, not babysit a woman. Trouble is, it's not really that, he is attracted to her, and that he doesn't like! It isn't long before troubles start to happen on the island and they get more attention than they want!

I like how Susan peeled away the layers of the characters in this story. I love Pierre - the go between who never lost his cool and never gave away the secrets his cohorts trusted him with.

This is a clean read.

FRASIER ISLAND is a fast-paced novel that you won’t want to put down. Ensign Rachel Whitney gets her dream assignment, being stationed on the secluded island of Frasier. After reading up on the man who will be her C.O., she can’t wait to meet the legend, Lt. George Hudson. Her thoughts quickly change when she finds him cold and unapproachable. Both Hudson and Whitney try to ignore the tension between them, while Pierre, the third person in the crew realizes the tension is due to the mutual attraction Hudson and Whitney feel for each other but refuse to admit to.

I loved FRASIER ISLAND. The intrigue and tug-of-war of emotions between the characters made it that I didn’t want to put the book.

This book jumped of the shelf at me because I've been to Frasier Island, Australia. This wasn't Australia, however, but a naval base for the U.S. It was a highly improbable story of a female ensign in a remote base with a male ensign and a male lieutenant. Immediately her gender caused romantic conflict, and the entire story was about how her past (sexual assault) and his (widowed CO) affected their relationship in addition to military protocol. And then you throw in a little potential nuclear power and espionage suspense into the isolated island in typhoon season, it's a recipe for disaster. Or perhaps not. The ending seemed a bit much to be realistic, but a typical result of a very atypical meet cute.

I've liked some of this author's Western stories, so I thought I'd give this book a chance. I got about 38% of the way into the book before I gave up. The first third was mostly boring, routine stuff where we learn how the gal had really looked forward to being mentored by the man in charge of Frasier Island, but he does his best to avoid her. At the point I quit, something suspenseful had happened but the gal is thinking how she's deeply in love with the guy even though he doesn't treat her well. She's desperately worried that he will leave the island and not come back. This just is not what I'm looking for in a "romance" and the suspense part was only recently revealed and still didn't really make sense at this point.

Second reading I read this years ago and enjoyed it. One of my all time favorite books ever. Just finished reading it with the boys and they liked it.

Rachel has admired George Hudson for a long time. She is excited when after training she gets the assignment at Frasier Island and finally gets to meet George. But things don't go well and she finds herself being short tempered and insubordinate with him. Things on the island are pretty laid back. She enjoys time spent with Pierre and is glad he's there as a buffer. Lots of mishaps and excitement occur throughout the story. I love the friendship between Rachel and Pierre and the struggles she faces with George. This was a great story.

Ensign Rachel Whitney has always wanted a career in the Navy. She is thrilled when she learns she is being posted to Frasier Island, a tiny and remote Naval installation in the Pacific. She finds it a challenge to earn the trust of her commanding officer, Lieutenant George Hudson. But they ultimately have to rely on one another to protect US military secrets and for their very lives.

This book is a reread for me. All three books in the Frasier Island Series are favorites of mine. The stories and characters are great, and the human relationships between the characters grow with each book.

This was a good inspirational fiction/adventure book. I was a little dismayed with the implausibility of two Naval officers finding romance with each other. My impression has always been that fraternization between officers is highly frowned upon. Although, if one were stuck on an island with only three people, I suppose it would be possible. Also, the secret that they are hiding/guarding on the island was a bit fantastical. I still give the book three stars; I enjoyed the story.

I enjoyed reading "Frasier Island". The storyline was very interesting (imagine being on a remote island with only two other people and having to be standing watch over the countries interests - a great "what if?") and I liked that the main characters had time to develop a relationship. I also enjoyed the secondary character, Pierre, who was the kind of friend everyone should have. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

WOW! I liked Rachel's spunk and determination. George, Rachel's commanding officer, is rough around the edges. Underneath all his gruffness is a tender heart that is healing.

This story is engaging from the beginning and doesn't let up until the end. It is well paced. I enjoyed watching as the characters worked through their issues to become a cohesive unit.

I am looking forward to visiting these characters again in the next book in this series. I highly recommend this book.

Awesome book

Only Susan Page Davis could take a remote Pacific volcanic island, put three Navy personnel on it, working in three shifts doing nothing but looking at monitors, and make it into a seatbelt suspense story! Wow, I was so unprepared for the drama and tension! I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a great story full of suspense, great characters, and a fiery romance to boot.

Frasier island

George lost his one true love to cancer and just wants to get away. He is in the navy and is assigned to a remote island. Ensign Rachael Whitney is assigned to work for him there. They do not get along at first because she feels he has something against her. This book has a lot of suspense in it.

This is Christian romantic suspense, although the suspense happened closer to the end, just so you know. The rest was more of a character study of the people on Frasier. Initially, the romance was a bit unbelievable that it could develop at all so fast but eventually it grew on me, I didn't realize this was book one in a series....I am hooked on the characters and will have to read on.

I enjoyed reading this book Naval themed book. It is different from other books that I have read in that it takes place on a small isolated Island. It deals with some difficult topics in a very sensitive way. I definitely recommend this book and author. I will be on the lookout for more books by this author.

Not a bad read. A Christian romantic suspense about a distant, important, and isolated naval outpost and the three-member team working on it. Really enjoyed this one, and was glad to have a strong and independent heroine, though I think that part died off too much at the end.
