This is a BL novel, a novel that focuses on a romance between two men.
In the continent of Tiandi humans lived amongst beasts, demons, and spirits. Here warriors were as common as the clouds in the sky, and each expert could either cultivate their inner energy known as Qi, or their soul, to form Spiritual Energy.
In the village of Jinwei, Luo Xiao grew up like a beautiful bird locked in a cage. He was weak from birth and unable to leave his bed for an extended period of time, yet his beauty made him well-liked amongst the villagers.
One day disaster struck the village of Jinwei. A Corpse Puppet appeared wanting to eradicate all life. A seal was unlocked, and soon the Corpse Puppet was dead under the hand of the sickly Luo Xiao, but this was not the end of his misfortune.
Right when he thought that the end was coming, a man as handsome as a god descended to the mundane world and took him away.
For the sake of revenge, Luo Xiao sold his soul to this handsome man, but is it only his soul that this alluring stranger took from him?
I am Tinalynge, an aspiring author who is deeply inspired by eastern fantasy such as wuxia, xianxia, and xuanhuan. The first story I wrote was Blue Phoenix, a series I poured my very heart and soul into creating.
Since I started writing, I have finished Blue Phoenix at eight books, Overthrowing Fate at three books and began Condemning the Heavens. Although I have finished two series so far, I still consider myself a beginner in the world of writing. I am aware that my writing still needs to evolve and grow to become better, and as a result, I work very hard daily to improve my writing and produce stories that people can enjoy reading.
Thank you, everyone, who has read my books, I am sure that with your continued support I will be able to continue improving and create worlds filled with wonder and excitement.
I'm not going to make a full review yet but when I do I can guarantee you one thing and that is that I'm going to rip this trash to utter shreds.
[EDIT] Time to finally write this review!
Let's start with the simplest point: I hated this.
Understand, I know it's my own fault for being curious and taking the deal to get both books (yes, this garbage has a sequel) on Kindle for cheap, and nobody forced me to read this but me. And nobody's going to force me to read the second book but me. But I at least hope that if any good can come out of my suffering, it'll be that this review convinces someone else not to risk the brain cell loss that comes with reading Fall of the Demon Prince.
Let's do some bullet points, because I doubt I can make this coherent. There's too much rage in me. This book has
- Poor editing - Extremely repetitive language, phrases and writing overall - No real world-building - An incredibly uncomfortable age gap that we get reminded of constantly because the author won't shut up about the fact the younger character is a minor - No explanation for the magic/cultivation system - Kidnapping and predatory behavior from the Demon Prince - The Demon Prince just says he's the Demon Prince and he'll kill people and he has no consequences for any of his actions whatsoever - Stockholm Syndrome! - Homophobia! - Constant casual murder of innocent civilians! - Female characters who are caricatures of Bitchy Girl caricatures! - Highly abusive behavior, emotional manipulation and gaslighting! - An extremely toxic relationship based on coercion and growing codependency!
To top it all off, the plot meanders and goes nowhere. Apparently weeks pass getting around the place, and all the younger MC does is be frail, blush enough it should be a medical condition, cultivate somehow (?), and swing wildly back and forth between being terrified and submissive to the Demon Prince, and being attracted to him in a simpering, whiny way. All the Demon Prince does is threaten everyone they meet, aggressively tell the MC that he [MC] belongs to him [Demon Prince] now and must do whatever he orders, swagger around saying he can do whatever he wants, unapologetically kill people for slights both real and imagined, and pat himself on the back for exercising """self-restraint""" when he really wants to forcibly take the MC against his will. (He does forcibly kiss him more than once without consent, which is technically sexual assault, which constantly leaves the already pathetically frail MC weaker and more drained than ever.) And then the book doesn't really end. It just cuts off. It just stops. (If you need more of my enraged complaints, feel free to check the status updates here from when I read it.)
This isn't a romance. I would hope what I've shared here makes that clear and obvious. And it's horribly written. It reads like problematic fanfic of already problematic shounen-ai and yaoi series that were popular back in the early 2000s. This is a perfect example of what people should mean when they talk about books that glorify or romanticize abusive, toxic relationships.
I stumbled across this quite accidentally on Kindle and, having recently fallen deeply in love with the works of Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, decided to give it a try. I'm definitely a fan of mystical China and gay get-togethers. Let's go.
Unfortunately, those were the only things going for this. The worldbuilding is half-finished--there are ways to teleport but the empire is still so vast that it takes months to cross it? How big is this planet? And everyone has a "soul rank," but the main character ascends ranks and never seems to change any of his abilities? Also, what does cultivation mean in this? There are no obvious tricks or magical things other than what Jiang Yao (the Seventh Demon Prince who seems to be nigh all-powerful, which, okay) does. I always felt like I was getting the outline of the world, not the world itself.
The writing is slow and repetitive--I stopped tracking how many times we are told that Jiang Yao is pretty and that Luo Xiao is young/weak/big-eyed. I get it. I do. They make a handsome couple and it stuns literally everyone they meet how pretty they are. I get it, I do. The concept--travelling toward the heart of the Demon Empire--can work, although such a travel narrative is usually a second-book kind of thing, but here it's as flat as it sounds. Not that I wasn't interested in the new cities; I was, oddly. But each new "adventure" was incredibly anticlimactic because the narrative kept assuring me that Jiang Yao could handle anything, never leaving me any room to be worried by the various antagonists.
All of that is general stuff that can be overlooked for a pop candy story and still get two stars, so what knocks this down to half a star if that is that the entire premise of the main ship/romance is coerced. I am not here for that, no matter how many times Tinalynge dressed it up as just an uneven match of experience. Let me toss out some examples: -Location 2363: "You will stay as my lover," Jiang Yao decided. "I will not accept a no. You are mine from now on, do you understand?" Right, so, the premise of the story is that Kiddo Luo Xiao (who legit is like 15, which is its own kind of problematic) gets caught in an attack on his village (by Some Monster that is surprisingly never really unpacked) and everyone he's ever known dies and Jiang Yao (Pretty Seventh Demon Prince) discovers he's an Astral Soul (whatever that is) and decides to hang onto him (for...something. I think it's to find an herb that then...doesn't seem to have needed him to be found? That was odd) as his little pet. He even puts a soul bond on Luo, meaning Luo cannot betray him because Luo will die. So, not safe, sane, or consensual from the very beginning. And then this line? It's everything that's wrong with this book. -Location 2983: He couldn't help but wonder why this previously happy man would suddenly turn so volatile and aggressive. Had he said or done something to warrant this complete change in mood? Tinalynge is trying to set up a whole Beauty and the Beast concept where the selfish and cruel Jiang Yao gets tamed by his love for Luo Xiao, but no. This is not that. This is abuse, where the abused takes on the idea that he can (and should) be responsible for the moods of the abuser who by the way can literally kill him if he wants. -Location 3008: Jiang Yao was an overbearing and impatient person by nature. It was only because it was Luo Xiao that he was gentle and patient, but right now his patience had reached its end. Personality shifts because of actual, declared love are one thing and can be done very well in literature. This is not that. This is an unhinged dude toying with a teenager. -Location 3728: "What are we going to do for the rest of the day then?" Luo Xiao asked as he looked around the room, unsure what Jiang Yao's plans were. After all, the man controlled practically his entire life. DING DING DING that is a PROBLEM NOT A ROMANCE. This would be horrifying in a het situation and it's kind of worse when it's a gay ship because there are already so many people who think of gay men as prone to sexual deviancy (not true, just in case that was a question for you). I can definitely handle minor power imbalances in romances, but this is just flat-out cringe.
I kind of want to read the sequel to see if Luo Xiao ever gets to be, y'know, functional rather than scared all the time, but we'll see. This one was so disappointing that I may not bother.
I really loved this book it read just like what it is inspired by Chinese BL novels that is it is well written I liked how the plot progressed as well the romance I liked how that moved along. I really liked the characters especially Lou Xiao and Jiang Yao they are both well written one being delicate and naïve and the other mostly cold hearted unless he is interacting with Lou Xiao. I really liked the romance I liked how it developed as one being fascinated by the other to only actually fall in love with the other by the end. I really liked the interactions between both of the MCs it is really sweet and shows hoe their relationship progresses as time goes by. The plot was interesting it started off with a weak and delicate boy that witnesses something terrible and somehow saves himself and runs into someone that scares him who he gradually comes to care for and even love by the end I am really looking forward to reading the sequel.
I enjoyed this book. I bought this series along with Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's series "Heaven Offical's Blessing," which I had finished reading recently. Of course, being a different author his writing style is different, and it took me a while to keep straight the different inner levels of their Qi, or their soul, which forms Spiritual Energy.
15-year-old Luo Xiao, a sickly boy, came from the village of Jinwei where all of the villagers were slaughtered by a Corpse Puppet including his father. It is here that he meets the Seventh Demon Prince of the Demon Empire, Jiang Yao. Luo Xiao is forced to sell his soul to the devil, to get revenge for his father, and to learn how he can increase his Spiritual Energy with Jiang Yao's help. The owner of the Corpse Puppet is the Fourth Demon Prince, Jiang Yao's brother.
Jiang Yao forces the boy to be his fake lover to keep him safe, but the Demon doesn't expect to fall for the boy. The two go through plots where many want to kill Luo Xiao and he has the protection of his Demon the two fall for each other but don't tell each other.
I found this to be such a delightful read! I completely enjoyed the interactions of both the MC and ML! I enjoy seeing their progress and how each has helped shaped the other. I’m scared for what the 4th brother is planning but I know the MC will work on becoming stronger! I love how supportive the ML is with the MC and how ruthless he can be when someone dares respect his partner! I’m so looking forward to what will happen now that they have reached his home! Thank you so much for this delightful read author! Looking forward to next book! ❤️❤️
So I wasn't sure what to expect from this novel. I've been reading a lot of Cultivation novels as of late, and I really do enjoy the danmei aspect of it, so I figured since I had audible credits I would give it a shot. And honestly, as of right now, it's very borderline 4 stars for me. I'm about half way through listening, and there's a few things I've noticed.
1. It can be VERY repetitive. The glances. The blushing. The questioning of feelings. Jealousy about the MC being with the ML. All of this is fine except that the author uses a lot of the same phrases again and again which leads me to point two.
2. The author(s) have a very similar writing style to myself which is to say it feels very... juvenile. That isn't inherently bad, let me make that clear, but it feels very mechanical. There's a lot of extra description which I feel sometimes isn't necessary. This leads into the sometimes repetitive-ness of the story.
3. The relationship IS questionable, there's no ifs, ands, or buts about it. It is less groom-y than some other reviews lead me to believe, but the main character does seem to have a bit of a savior complex about the love interest, and his total dependency on his presence kind of weirds me out.
Overall, it's not a bad read, but I'm not sure it's something I'd read over and over again.
Well, I must say I did not have much expectations from this book when I started reading it, especially since I'm not into the BL genre. But I thought of giving it a shot since I liked the previous stories written by this author.
Boy was I wrong! The story is very captivating, couldn't put it down at all. It has some action, and the traditional face-slapping feels very satisfying. But that does not matter, what's important here are the characters. You start to fall in love with them and see them grow as they progress through the world. They relationship feels alive and adorable, lots of fluffiness. It starts to grow on you and you start to feel for them. There is a part of the story that feels so emotional that it made me break in tears. It left me wanting to read more and hope nothing bad happens throughout the next books. I was hooked. Also, the BL part is very mild, you don't have to worry there.
I won't go into more details, so I won't spoil the story for you. But do yourself a favor and read this book. Especially if you are into romance and want to read a good story.
The main character is FIFTEEN and being lusted over by a several thousand year old demon. The relationship is blatantly romanticized grooming of a minor. It’s never framed as a predatory relationship, and there is zero care given to what should be a very serious topic.
Now onto the other aspects of this book:
I probably would’ve loved this book when I was 13 years old. It reads like a wattpad fanfic. Or if I’m being generous, the literary version of those cheap short dramas that get advertised on TikTok. The book repeat the same things right down to the exact same phrasing over and over, to the point where I question if it was even edited at all. We are CONSTANTLY reminded about how beautiful and innocent and weak the main character is. He’s constantly being called a “small boy” and “youth” and “cute.” It’s creepy as hell. We’re also constantly reminded how big and strong and scary the love interest is. It’s genuinely shocking how juvenile it is.
The good things: A mythical ancient China setting is very fun. It’s a complete waste here though as the setting gets zero development, and all of the time is spent fetishizing predatory behavior.
I'm giving it a 5 star because its a BL story, i'm kinda tired of boy meets girl stories that has these kind of elements in them. Ive been looking for a good BL/MM story like this for a while so I got exited and started reading it asap. Even better the story is quite good, I noticed though that it seems rushed in some places and (spoiler: that the mean girl from the caravan never did anything). Other than that the story is interesting and the main chars are both cute and i'm hoping theill both develop togeather. I do hope youll write it more than two books and make it a series as youve done with the others, as I said earlier ive been loking for these kind of story, so I hope you dont rush it to finish it quickly. Love what youve written so far, keep up the good work.
So Im in love with mdzs works so i thought id give it a try. I have read all 3 books so far as i kept waiting for something big to happen....it never did. Its so repetitive that it could be condensed into 1.5 books, we get it they are a stunning couple and one is to naïve to do more then cuddle and kiss. The characters were not that developed and both personalities changed.....it felt like cold demon who kills people turned into a puppy dog. The magic system was a mess and made no sense and by trying to over explain it and repeating it constantly made me tune out completely. Also main character is 15 at the start but apparently time has passed where he has grown up but seemed like it was only months between all books. Very confusing. Had high hope but was disappointed.
Enjoyed his cultivation books but this is very little cultivation. It is a slow seduction story between two males. Given the number of harem books out there, I can't complain about the subject matter. I will complain that given the age and power difference between the two protagonists, it is less like seduction and much more like grooming. That and the lack of cultivation storyline makes this of no interest to me.
I am so thrilled that a good wuxia / xanxia author has written a boylove (aka gay romance) novel. Well written, good story. I enjoy the world and characters. I recommend this book to lovers of the wuxia / xanxia genre's as well as any lover of a good fantasy MM romance.
I usually don't go for age gap romances, especially when one of the main characters starts off in the series as a young teen, but Jiang Yao wants nothing but the best for Luo Xiao, and the romance isn't a thing until Luo Xiao is older. This is also a slow-burn romance, but the chemistry between the characters is clear from the start. It's definitely worth a read!
DNF at 10% because the Imortal Demon Prince is LUSTING OVER THE 15 YO MAIN CHARACTER no nono that's the main couple no I can smell the manipulation and gaslighting coming from miles away The MC was just found alive on a decimated village and the Demon MC links him to himself so that if the 15 yo MC ever goes against him, he'll instantly die. hohoho no... no
I like the characters and the emphasis put how their relationships develops. The action goes on slowly but steady and that allow for room to show how the characters growth
I could not help but think of The Legendary Master's Wife while reading this. It was worth reading. The age gap is a little weird but over all cute. No adult scenes just kissing so not too weird.
This book has a great story that hooks you from the very beginning. The characters have a natural chemistry and the story flows smoothly. Fluff and adventure working perfectly in tandem.
2.5 rounded up to be nice. The age gap was a little too much for me and while I enjoy Wuixi, the language in this was oddly disconnected for a book not translated. I guess it was to invoke the same atmosphere but it's my least favourite part of wuixi.
I love the story with all its twists and turns. I truly feel as though I've stepped foot into another world. The subject and timeline are exciting. I look forward to beginning Book 2.
This was my very first MM read, and it sent me spiraling down the best rabbit hole—grabbing every book I could get my hands on. The characters are beyond lovable, and the adventure they take you on is truly unforgettable
