He wanted a new beginning. What he got was a glimpse of a life he could never have...
Widower Dane Winters just wanted a new beginning for himself and his six month old daughter after his estranged husband's cold-blooded murder and moving to a small town in Southwest Montana seemed like a good place to start. But he never expected a favor for a friend to turn into a deadly encounter that puts him on a collision course with a mysterious stranger passing through town.
Former FBI agent Jaxon Reid stopped in Dare, Montana to right a wrong, not get caught up in the life of an uptight, country vet with a holier-than-thou attitude. But he soon finds himself drawn to the quiet, insecure single father who's trying to leave behind a life of pain and heartbreak.
Dane can't deny his attraction to Jax, but he knows that pursuing a relationship with the gorgeous, younger man will only end in heartbreak and turn him into someone he swore he would never be again. But when danger looms, he's forced to accept Jax into his life and home, along with the emotional vulnerability that being around Jax brings to the surface.
As their connection deepens, can Dane find the trust Jax needs from him in order to build a life together or will he let his past destroy his one chance at a real future?
Can be read as a stand-alone story - no cliffhangers.
This series crosses over with some of my other series, so for the most enjoyment, they should be read in order, but it is not required. You can find the correct reading order at the beginning of each book. I've also bundled all my series in the correct reading order under the title of A Family Chosen: The Protectors and Barrettis.
Dane was insecure and emotionally unavailable for nearly the entire book and he treated Jax like shit over and over again. He repeatedly pushed Jax away and then was surprised when Jax finally left. I get why Dane had trust issues and I get why he felt insecure. He seriously needed a therapist to help him sort through all that and to help him get better. I liked Dane, in Finding Home, but all through Finding Trust, he just pissed me off. Repeatedly.
And Jax...He was too perfect. Protective, hot and more than accommodating. He cooked, changed diapers, patrolled the perimeter, protected Dane and Emma, tore down the barn, and still managed to look good and give Dane his undivided attention. I liked him, but he really was TOO GOOD to be true. Not a flaw in him. And that's too bad, because having a flaw or two would make him seem more real.
My conclusion, though? Cade was right - Jax deserved better.
I loved to stay a bit longer in Finn's, Callan's and Rhys' world, but my honest opinion about the MCs in this book - Dane and Jax?
They didn't blow me away, sadly. Insecure and troubled Dane needed a therapist instead of a lover and Jax was so frigging perfect, it was almost annoying (Mr FBI hunk loves to cook for his lover, feeds his lover's baby daughter, changes diapers, erects barns in the backyard and shoots bad guys whenever the need arises - and all that while being shirtless and looking hot in his sweat stained jeans).
Definitely not a relaxing Sunday afternoon read - and the crime subplot was just a tad too simple.
But since we get to see quite a lot of our trio from book 1, I'll gladly give 3 stars! Besides, 'Emma's car seat' deserves some attention too. After reading this book, I feel like every baby should have one, LOL.
Both guys were angry with each other all the time and then one of them would have a breakdown, then they would have some (angry) sex, and then they would be fighting again. And I'm not even sure why!
ETA (08/08/2022): Apparently I read this book series back in 2017, but I just accidently re-read both the first in the series and this one without even an inkling that I had already read them already.
*** 2.5 Stars ***
I didn't feel like Dane's character in this book aligned with the person we'd met in Finding Home. In the first book in the series, Dane was a confident, caring, quietly outspoken, man of integrity and grit. In this book, he was a hot mess of insecurities, quick to jump to conclusions, and even quicker to run from his problems. I have to be honest, I was less than thrilled about this personality bait and switch. And, while I appreciated his cut abs and willingness to throw himself - sometimes literally - in the line of fire for those he cares about and wants to protect, Jax was perhaps just a little too perfect to be believable.
As for the dramarama? The number of gunfights, arson attacks, kidnapping attempts, and general bodily assaults in this series so far rival even the most outrageous Mary Calmes novel.
I already met Dane, the vet and Jax, the former FBI agent, since I've read book 3 first. I was a bit surprised by Dane's unstable condition in this book, but I still enjoyed reading this one.
Dane and Jax meet when there is a shoot-out involving, Finn, Callum and Rhys (book 1). You don't have to read the first book to understand the storyline.
Jax is a former FBI agent and he is trying to protect Dane's daughter during a carjacking/ shooting. This however is not how Dane's sees it, and he freakes out, punching Jax right in the face. To Dane's defence...I understood were he was coming from. Jax shot into the car killing the perb, but Dane's baby daughter was in the car too. As a mom...I would have freaked out too.
Anyways, there is an instant spark between the two men and because Jax is worried about Dane's safety he decides to hang around this town for a bit longer. After spending some time with the vet and his daughter, he realizes very fast that he is in love with the man. This book was pretty heavy on the insta-love.
Dane however is not easy to convince....he has major self esteem issues and is an ass on more than one occasion. I've read a lot of reviews from people, who were very annoyed by his character. I can understand why they would feel that way, and eventhough I got irritated a little bit by the man..I still enjoyed the book.
Sure Dane was a bit whiny and a bit of a dumbass, but I haven't lived his life...so who am I to judge his character flaws and low self esteem. I think everyone would have been more forgiving about his character, if his past would have been descriped a bit more. We get some flashes about how he was treated by his parents and former lovers and husband, but not enough to feel sorry for him about the way he treated Jax.... Especially since Jax was such a nice and understanding character.
Still I got over it, and Jax more than made up for Dane's flighty behavior.
There was some background story going on about Dane and Emma being in danger, which was resolved pretty fast and easy...
There was some nice steam, a cute baby and HEA....exactly what I needed right now.
It's not my favorite book by this author, but it was a very enjoyable read
2nd of the « finding series ». I strongly suggest reading “finding home” before you start this one to get all the background.
Dane Winters has just settled in a small country town as a veterinarian with his six month old daughter Emma after his husband passed away. There, he is mixed up with an attack made on his new friends’ ranch and meets Jax, a former FBI agent.
From there, you get it all : lust, strong feelings, smoking hot sex, patience, action, and a sweet baby who brings the best (well, most of the time) from both MCs
A little bit sappy ? May be. Very sexy and hot ? For sure. Recommended ? Definitely.
One of my favorite from Sloane Kennedy. Will reread it for sure.
3 stars!! Liked it.. 👍but did not love it😒. In fact, I would have given it a 2.75 or close but decided to round it up since I really liked Jaxon😍💘: but Dane..🙄😬.. what happened to him??!! 😱. He had seemed like such a charismatic, strong person in "Finding Home" but in this he was all over the place. His mood swings were giving me whiplash..😡. Nevertheless, the plot followed similar lines with a strong chemistry between the two🔥, insta-love with OTT emotions💘😭, past baggages playing on the MCs insecurities😢, an element of danger threatening their fragile happiness😱.....basically everything that Ms. Kennedy's books are known for🤩. I just wish she hadn't changed Dane's personality to such a degree that he was almost unrecognizable from the 1st book. But Jaxon proved to be the super-hero who saved the book, Emma and Dane from self-destructing😉. All in all it ended in a sweet and satisfying HEA 😍. It's part of the series, so I'm glad I read it but relieved that it was short. Read it at you own peril 🤐
The writing was lovely, the plot was good too and little Emma won my heart from the start but Dane and Jax as a couple - I didn't like them together. Jax as a person I liked and respected especially for seeking justice the way he did. I liked his loyalty and how he constantly forgave Dane. Dane, the king of judgement, didn't appeal to me. Even with his past being painful he was way too quick to make snap decisions about Jax's motives and his personality and just say whatever he wanted without verifying the facts and then putting all the blame on his insecurities and his past relationships, and thus constantly hurting Jax in the process. I can't say I liked him at all by the end of the book.
Yes, their chemistry was off the charts but their inability to communicate created many issues that could have been avoided. The book was good, the secondary characters added a little humor but mostly the story had a slightly downcast mood. I am glad that Jax and Dane got together and figured out their issues though. So on to the next one!
I liked this story, it seemed to be a quick read but still had enough to keep you engaged. I liked Jax and Dane as characters, loved the determination and drive that Jax had to make it work with Dane. All of the men in Dane's life left him a little more broken than the last, but Jax is the man to build him up and not break him down. Dane was a little insecure at times but the more time he spent with Jax the stronger he became. I was nice to catch up with Callan, Finn and Rhys from Book One. Nice M/M read and the sex was hot.
We met Dane and his daughter,Emma, in the first book, but these stories can stand alone. He's a new Veterinarian in town, making his property upgraded for opening his practice. His husband passed away, and he's starting fresh, but has nightmares and insecurities galore from verbal abuse, both from family and boyfriends. We open this story with the shoot out and near kidnapping of Emma. Former FBI, big strong, Jax is there and saves the day. Instead of being grateful, Dane is a jerk. Jax is giving him the benefit of the doubt and hanging around to be sure Dane and Emma are safe. A lot is going on, with a stalking, secrets, confusion and finally some clarity. The guys tell each other their stories, have super hot sex, and this is a fast paced tale. It isn't perfect, but I liked it. ENJOY !!!
Unfortunately, this was a book that never lived up to its potential based on the characters we met in the previous book and on what the blurb has to offer.
Both of these MC's, but especially Dane, ended up being entirely too frustrating. Dane's hot/cold and push/pull drove me nuts. Same with Jax in the beginning. And these two only talked right before sex, during sex, or immediately after sex. Otherwise, if even a minute passed, it was Shutdown City, population 2.
And I'd like to know why Dane's issues aren't seriously addressed here? He obviously needs professional help to deal with his low self-esteem issues. He's causing harm to himself and blacking out when emotions become too much...that's not something that an "I love you" and "You're good enough" can solve.
Also, while I don't have strong feelings one way or another about kids in books, I do like it when there's a reason they're there. Here, Emma was nothing more than a prop who spends most of her time in a car seat being carted around. It was really weird.
The "suspense" element was a throwaway joke.
And of course you have your common novella trait of the author putting their foot on the gas pedal at the end. Quick and easy resolution.
Also, the introduction of one of the main characters in the next book is super awkward and so forced. He comes out of left field with random background on him thrown in. Just like Emma, the car seat baby....it was weird. I would have rather he been left out and newly introduced in his own book.
You can definitely tell this is one of Sloane Kennedy's earlier books. That addictive writing quality is there, but the story crafting and development still leaves a lot to be desired.
This rating is by Kind courtesy of Dane (& his annoying flip flopping, woe-is-me behaviour) and Jax (& his willingness to be knocked down time and time again). When Jax finally grew a pair and walked away from all the hurt being dished out by Dane, I could honestly care less.
Really, for someone who’d gone through the same kind of hell at the hands of other people, I expected Dane to be the LAST person to treat others like that.
Also, I expected him to take some responsibility for his actions and apologize to Jax like the good, kind and decent human being he supposedly was (without being prompted to do so by people or circumstances). Needless to say, I didn’t believe in any emotional connection these two had and even the physical was a bit hard to believe simply because of the way Dane acted after these sexy times.
So far, this series has been a 3.5/10 Stars for me and I’m kind of running out of hope that it’ll get better.
Overall book rating: 3 Audio Book: Michael Pauley - 3.8 Book Cover: 3.5
I’m gonna say that maybe, this isn’t my week for SK.
The drama didn’t work for me this time around.
In the first part of this series, Dane was someone who immediately drew my attention. The way he stood up for Finn in that store made me really want to get to this book you know?
Then somewhere along the line the wagon went off the road. Dane pulled the oh I’m not good enough for “anything” card and I rolled my eyes so hard I might still have a headache.
I’m not going into details here but yap. It didn’t rock my boat this time around. Sorry people.
Reread 7/1/2021 at this point I can’t decide if I’m still reading as punishment or a sick fascination with the fact that I ever read all of these book to begin with…
Moving along through the series and other series by this author in the order she recommends.
I didn't care for this one as much as the others. There was insta-love, which I usually don't mind, but the other partner was less than accepting and at times had bizarre reactions to the suggestion of love. He (Dane) was also very difficult to warm up to.
Jax, on the other hand, was hot, alpha male through and through and when he took those bad-ass shots at the fleeing SUV, he was just fine. Very fine, indeed.
I'm glad Jax got what he wanted, and I hope Dane gets his act together off-page, but overall, this isn't on my radar as one of the best.
I tried. But this series just isn't for me. Like Book 1, everything feels rushed and haphazard. There was no real time to set anything up, no chance to really understand the MC's.
Between Book 1 and Book 2, Dane seems like a completely different person. Pushing Jax away, and then being surprised when he leaves. Inviting a guy for dinner, and then being surprised that Jax takes offence after he laid his feelings out there.
It all just felt very one dimensional. Again, like Book 1, it seems to be a race to the finish - relying on action and drama to try and keep us reading on. But it fell flat for me. I gave Book 2 a chance with the hopes that my original thoughts would be wrong, but in the end I found myself having to push myself to finish this book.
Despite there being another three books in the series, this is where I'll be leaving off, unfortunately.
Over the last 24 hours I have read Sloane Kennedy's Redeeming Rafe, and Finding Trust. I could write some long, in-depth review for each book and make them pretty with some hot gifs, but I'm not. Instead, I'm going to make this pretty simple. In fact, I'm copying this one review for both books cuz I'm just feeling lazy that way. So here goes: I enjoyed both books but what I really enjoyed was the fact that the author did not pigeonhole her M/M heroes in these books. One is not more Alpha than the other. They each have moments of intense, dominate need for their partner. One is also not more submissive than the other. Vulnerability is seen in both Cade and Rafe in Redeeming Rafe; and Jax and Dane in Finding Trust. I read a lot of M/M romance and many of them have main characters who fall into a stereotypical pairing that sometimes comes across as one partner being über masculine and the other sort of girly. That isn't necessarily a bad combo, but if the writer isn't careful those rigid roles can lead to a boring story. It is refreshing to read an M/M book with characters who embrace both sides of their nature. Plus, I just gotta say, I really enjoy reading about the big Alpha badasses getting off on being manhandled. sigh...
These are the first M/M books I've read by Kennedy so I'm not sure if this is her norm when writing M/M but it really worked for me.
I loved Finding Trust and getting to know Dane Winters and Jaxon Reid.
This continues from were Finding Home ended for Dane and Jax with the aftermath of the events that happened and how Dane misjudged what Jax did and why even shocked me.
Dane moved to Dare so he could bring Emma up in a safe place he just wants a quiet life with his daughter and run his practice the last thing he needs is to have Jax in their lives but Jax won’t go away, this is not an easy relationship Dane finds it hard to trust Jax after all the mental abuse he has suffered from different people in his life and he feels he is not good enough for him.
Jax came to Dare to see Rhys but he got caught up in the drama and now he can’t walk away and leave Dane and baby Emma in danger, so he stays with them even though Dane does not want him there, they spend most of the time ignoring each other until Jax takes control.
I enjoy relationships like this one were they are fighting A LOT at the beginning and the angry sex HOLY HELL that was SCORCHING, baby Emma has stolen Jax’s heart, but Dane is breaking it so for his own sake he walks away.
Can Dane be brave enough and fight for Jax???
Enjoyed having more time with Callan, Finn and Rhys and some old faces turned up Cade and Logan.
This is the second book in the Finding Series. The beginning of this book runs concurrent with parts at the end of Finding Home and would best be read/listened to after that book.
My biggest issue is that this is *really* short. At 4 hours ~ it's really more of a novella than a book. It was an OK story as part of the overall series arc, but on it's own, it leaves a lot to be desired. First, there were a LOT of sex scenes, good ones for sure, but it didn't allow for much story. Dane was particularly frustrating in his inability to move forward until the very end. When Jax & Dane are *finally* on the same page, the book abruptly ends.
Updated 7/21/20 for the audio: Michael Dean's narration is consistent with his other performances in the series. Dane & Jax have unique voices as do the secondary characters.
Note: While Finding is it's own series, some of the Finding characters & events are interconnected with the Escort, Barretti Security, and Protectors series. Visit Sloane Kennedy's website for a list showing how several of her series tie together and different reading/listening order options. You don't always have to be familiar with the other books to enjoy them individually, but I really enjoy the entire "world" she has created. My personal preference for reading order is chronological/timing.
This was a major disappointment after reading Finding Home. There was absolutely no chemistry between Dane and Jax. And Dane was so confident in the first book but here his confidence was sorely lacking. For some reason I didn't like how they made the baby seem older than her 7 months. And what baby just loves everyone????
I totally skimmed over the sex scenes because if the chemistry isn't there between the leads then I don't care. And I hope each book doesn't have each couple facing some kind of peril because I wouldn't want to continue on the series. The plot here was very thin and the bad guy ridiculous!!!! I do want to read Hunter Greene's story so I'll continue on.
I dove head first into this story after being blown away by book 1, Finding Home. In hindsight, I’m unsure if that was a good thing or not as this story fell way short of the mark for me. Perhaps I set the bar too high?
Dane was my favorite side-character in the first book. I loved how he made a stand against the towns folk, supporting the three men and helping to dispel any homophobia. Give him his own story and he turns into a whiny, annoying, not particularly likeable character.
Jax had the patience of a saint. Lucky for Dane the man couldn’t be kept down no matter how many times he pushed him away. Even though the sex was off the charts, and there’s plenty of it, I never felt a love connection between these two men.
There’s a backstory of someone following Dane, breaking into his home and stealing his phone records, to add suspense to this story. However, it wasn’t very suspenseful as it got pushed to the backseat while Dane had a meltdown over his non-acceptance as a child. Where did the strong man who made a stand in book 1 go?
Baby Emma added a nice touch to the first story, but not so much in this story. Dane's parenting was questionable, as in a few minor facts I overlooked for the sake of fiction, but when he made noise of giving her up, I lost all respect for the man!
Toward the end a few new, or were they old characters are introduced? From what I could gather they are from other series by this author, so long time readers of Sloane’s might garner more from the plot than I did.
On reflection, this story was far from terrible, I think I just failed to comprehend the point. I am but one reviewer with my own opinion so take this review with a grain of salt. There are numerous good reviews for Jax and Dane’s story, go check them out, or better yet grab a copy of this story and draw your own conclusion.
