About the author

K.R. Meera is an Indian author, who writes in Malayalam. She won Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 2009 for her short-story, Ave Maria.She has also been noted as a screenplay writer of 4 serials.
Meera was born in Sasthamkotta, Kollam district in Kerala.She worked as a journalist in Malayala Manorama, later resigned to concentrate more on writing. She is also a well-known column-writer in Malayalam

I have been getting behind on my reading of Malayalam literature, which is a shame, considering it's my mother tongue. So this vacation while I am in Kerala, I have decided to read a few of the "new" authors (new to me, that is - I'm about twenty-five years behind!) at random. I picked up this slim volume of stories by K.R.Meera. I'm glad that I did.

Guillotine by K.R.Meera contains seven very short stories: short in length, but long on impact. This author knows how to use language mercilessly and ruthlessly, with a razor-sharp edge to her words, so the title for the collection becomes extremely apt. Meera has a style which uniquely identifies her: this is a comparatively rare thing in Malayalam. After V.K.N and Zacharia, she is the first writer whom I have come across who takes care in framing her story in such a way that the telling becomes as important as the content.

Death and illicit love are two of the main themes which intertwine in the stories: sometimes, it is difficult to separate the two. In one tale, lovers frantically consummate their love after waiting for thirty years, as government-sponsored goons hack them down. In another, a woman chances to take part in the funeral of a gay man, finally understanding the pain of her gay husband whom she had hounded to death. And in the title story, the story of Charlotte Corday and Robespierre is juxtaposed with that of the protagonist and her revolutionery lover-the same way the image of the guillotine is superimposed with the razor blades with which they attempt suicide.

For me, the most powerful story in the book was Naikkolam ("The Dog Avatar"), which talks about the heartbreaking ordeal of HIV infected children in Kerala without being sentimental. It also pokes fun at the press in its role as the "watchdog" of democracy. In Malayalam, there is a saying: "If you take on a dog avatar, you must be prepared to bark". Well, the press barks - but mostly for the powers that be and the moneybags. Meera has proved through this short gem that a poignant tale can also be a biting satire.

I will most definitely be reading more of Meera's works in the future. Four very well-deserved stars.

This amazing book contains seven short stories which are really realistic and meaningful.'coming out', A short story portrays the problems faced by LGBTQ+ community and it's protagonist who views it as disgusting and a sin at first represents the people who still think of it as not normal and it's an illness. Another story in the book portrays the horror of HIV affected people and the poor and inhuman treatments them and their families facing in the society.
The way K.R meera conveys all these socially relevant and prominent messages throu short stories are really admirable. Her writing is really powerful and compelling to read more.

 ആദ്യത്തെ കഥ  ഗേ  വിഭാഗത്തിൽ പെടുന്ന വ്യക്തികൾ നേരിടുന്ന പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ , അവരെ സമൂഹം നോക്കിക്കാണുന്ന രീതി ഇവയൊക്കെ വിവരിക്കുന്നു. ആണും ആണും ചേരുന്നത് പാപം എന്ന് മുദ്ര കുത്തി , തങ്ങളുടേതല്ലാത്ത കാരണത്താൽ  സമൂഹത്തിൽ നിന്നും മാറ്റിനിർത്തപ്പെടുന്ന അവരുടെ മനോവിഷമങ്ങൾ എഴുത്തുകാരി ഇതിൽ നന്നായി അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

നായ്‌ക്കോലം എന്ന ചെറുകഥ നമ്മുടെ 
 കണ്ണുനനയിക്കുന്നതാണ്. എയ്ഡ്സ് 
ബാധിച്ച 6 വയസ്സുകാരൻ യേശുവിന്റെ 
കഥയാണിത് . അനാഥനായ അവനെ പഠിപ്പിക്കാൻ സ്കൂൾ അധികാരികൾ വിസമ്മതിക്കുന്നതും സമൂഹം എയ്ഡ്സ് രോഗികളെ അറിവില്ലായ്മ കാരണം മാറ്റിനിർത്തിയിരുന്ന കാലഘട്ടത്തെയും ഇവിടെ നോവലിസ്റ്റ് പ്രതിപാദിക്കുന്നു.  
…………………………………………………………………………       6 വയസുള്ള കുട്ടിക് പുല്ലിന്റെ ചൊറിച്ചിലും ചെള്ളിന്റെ കടിയുമല്ല ഹൃദയഭേദകം. നിനക്ക് വിശക്കുന്നോ എന്ന് ആരെങ്കിലും ചോദിക്കാനില്ലാത്തതാണ്. ഉണ്ണാനോ ഉറക്കാനോ കുളിപ്പിക്കാനോ അസുഖമുണ്ടോ എന്ന് ചോദിയ്ക്കാൻ പോലും ആരുമില്ലായിരുന്നു.

ആണുങ്ങളോട് കളിച്ചാൽ എന്ന ചെറുകഥ വളരെയധികം നർമ്മമുഹൂർത്തങ്ങൾ ഉള്ളതായിരുന്നു . കഥാകാരിക്ക് നർമവും വഴങ്ങും എന്ന് തെളിയിക്കാൻ ഈ 
ഒരൊറ്റ കഥ തന്നെ ധാരാളം.
 
അവസാനത്തെ കഥ 'പശ്യ പ്രിയേ കൊങ്കണേ', എനിക്ക് ഒത്തിരി ഇഷ്ടപെട്ട ഒരു കഥയായിരുന്നു. വിവാഹ  ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ  വിജയത്തിന് വേണ്ട അടിസ്ഥാന ഘടകം എന്താണെന്നു ഈ കഥ നമ്മെ കാണിച്ചു തരുന്നു.
 


ആദ്യത്തെ വായനയിൽ മനസിലാക്കിയെടുക്കാൻ പറ്റാത്ത ആശയങ്ങൾ ചില കഥകളിൽ നമുക്ക് കാണാൻ കഴിയും. ഒരു പുനർവായന വേണ്ടി വരും അത്തരം കഥകൾക്ക്.

ഒരു സമ്മർദിത നാടകവേദിയിലെ കുടിപാർപ്പുകാരാണ് മനുഷ്യർ എന്നതിന് ഈ കഥകൾ അടിവരയിടുന്നു . ചരിത്രം കോമാളി വേഷത്തിൽ മർദ്ദനോപകരണവുമായി പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുമ്പോൾ കഥകൾ കൊണ്ട് തീർക്കാവുന്ന പ്രതിരോധങ്ങളാണു ഓരോ കഥയിലും പ്രത്യക്ഷമാകുന്നത്. നർമ്മബോധം പോലും വിലക്കപെട്ട സ്ത്രീലോകത്തിന്റെ പലതരം ഏകാന്തതകളെ ആത്മപരിഹാസത്തോളമെത്തുന്ന നിർമമതയൊടെ ഈ കഥാകാരി അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.
കമിങ്ങ് ഔട്ട്‌ - പുരുഷനും പുരുഷനും ഇണ ചേരാമോ? അങ്ങനെ അവർ കമിങ്ങ് ഔട്ട്‌ നടത്തുമ്പോൾ അവരെ സ്നേഹിക്കുന്ന അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അവർ സമൂഹത്തിനു മുന്നിൽ സ്വന്തം ആണും പെണ്ണും അല്ലാത്ത അവസ്ഥയെ മറച്ചുപിടിക്കാനായി ഒപ്പം കൂട്ടുന്നവരുടെ വികാരങ്ങൾ എന്ത് ? സേബയുടെ ലാസരിന്റെയും ജോണിന്റെയും ഡേവിഡിന്റെയും കഥകൾ അങ്ങനെയൊരവസ്ഥയിൽ നമ്മെ കൊണ്ടെത്തിക്കുന്നു.
ഗില്ലറ്റിൻ - ഫ്രഞ്ച് റെവലൂഷന്റെ ഭാഗമായ ഗില്ലറ്റിനും മക്സിമിലിയൻ റോബസ്പിയറും ഷാർലോട്ട് കൊർദെയും ഗുരുവും അജിതയും തമ്മിലുള്ള പ്രണയമില്ലാത്ത പ്രണയത്തെയും ആ ബന്ധത്തെ ഒരു ഗില്ലറ്റിൻ കൊണ്ട് വേദനിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിന്റെയും ആഖ്യാനമാണ് ഈ കഥയിൽ.
നായ്ക്കോലം - എല്ലാവരും ഒരു സ്റ്റോറി ആകുന്ന ഒരു സമൂഹത്തിൽ നാം ഇപ്പോൾ ജീവിക്കുന്നു .അങ്ങനെ വര്തക്കും സ്റ്റോറിക്കും വേണ്ടി തലോടുകയും സ്നേഹം ഭാവിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ അത് സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നവന്റെ യഥാർത്ഥ അവസ്ഥ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കാതിരിക്കുകയും പിന്നീടു അത് ബോധ്യപ്പെടുംപോളുള്ള വിങ്ങലും ആണ് ഈ കഥ.
ഉച്ഛേ ദനം - ഭൂമിയും പ്രണയവും വൻകിട കുത്തക കമ്പനികൾക്ക് തീറെഴുതി കൊടുക്കേണ്ടി വന്ന ഹതഭാഗ്യർ ഈ കഥയിൽ ഉറവെടുക്കുന്നു .
ജോര്ജ്ജ് മൂന്നാമൻ തീവണ്ടി ഓടിക്കുമ്പോൾ - പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കാൻ കഴിയാത്ത പ്രണയം. തിരിച്ചറിയാത്തതും തിരിച്ചു നല്കത്തതുമായ പ്രണയം , മിസ്സ്‌ ഗൊണ്‍സാൽവെസ്സിന്റെയും ജോര്ജിന്റെയും പ്രണയം.
ആണുങ്ങളോട് കളിച്ചാൽ - സ്വയം പരിഹാസ്യനാവുന്നവന്റെ ധർമ്മസങ്കടം .
പശ്യ പ്രിയേ കൊങ്കണേ - സ്ത്രീയുടെയും പുരുഷന്റെയും ജീവിതനിഘണ്ടുവിലെ സുന്ദരജീവിതത്തിന്റെ അർത്ഥവ്യത്യാസങ്ങൾ വരച്ചുകാട്ടുന്നു ഈ കഥ.
വിഷയസമ്പത്ത് കൊണ്ടും രചനശൈലി കൊണ്ടും മികച്ചത് എന്ന് അവകാശപ്പെടാവുന്ന ഒരു നല്ല കഥാസമാഹാരം .

Where emotional trauma gets served in elegant glassware, garnished with sharp feminist despair and a twist of existential citrus. If you’re in the mood to feel personally attacked by literature that also manages to be beautiful, haunting, and intellectually chewy, then congrats.. you made the best choice.

Guillotine....It’s not just a story. It’s a literary guillotine in that it will slice into your illusions about love, loyalty, motherhood, and what women are supposed to endure while smiling politely. Meera takes the political and the personal and fuses them into something that crackles with suppressed rage.
