How Bear Lost His Tail is a clever story to explain why bears have short, stumpy tails. It contains ideas around problem solving, copying, aggression, comeuppance and vanity.

This book is part of the Reading Champion series. The back of the book features a page for readers to consider the story and themes further. Questions are posed to promote discussion and there is a writing task to encourage creativity. There is also a guide for parents or teachers to enable them to assist their young readers.

Ideal for: young readers aged 6-8 years old.

As a white banded book, this story contains mostly medium and long sentences, requiring a reasonable level of inference and reflection while reading. This book can be read independently, although it is recommended that parents or teachers ask questions and prompt readers to challenge their comprehension.
