"A-DRIFT"....a play on words, as in "adrift" floating aimlessly, or A drift, as in a big pile of snow. Good story for a hot summer day!
A light tone, a screwy sense of humor along with some silly, some serious, some science, and characters that are fun, irritating, cranky, boozy, laughable, naughty, touchy, nuts, smart, and even thoughtful make the mishmash of their personalities interesting to follow as a winter storm descends on the interstate they are traveling.
As weather deteriorates some manage to stop at the lone truck stop, Agnes' Midnight Truck Stop Diner, where Agnes herself, the corn-fed, beef-raised, middle-aged, waitress-owner warns them about the possibility of a serious outbreak of harsh winter weather that can come barreling down the plains from the Dakotas through Nebraska and into Kansas with few natural obstructions to slow it down. But the travelers discount her years of veteran weather experience and her practical knowledge of the interstates across the bleak winter expanse of western Kansas and one by one they blow her off and think her warnings are doubtful, born of irrational fears and too much time making coffee. Each traveler thinks they can beat the weather, pushing onward, despite Agnes’ warnings about the seemingly ludicrous formation of mega-drifts that sometimes pile up across the interstates.
Personal problems, personalities, and modes of transportation eventually collide with a Siberian Express blizzard and the travelers have to take a stand against a highway obliterating mega-drift while tolerating each other and their own random concerns. They learn that to have any chance at surviving from the severe cold, wind, and snow, and the eventual rush of the oncoming conga-line of interstate snowplows that stop for nothing, they finally grasp that they have to put their heads together to conceive a plan to be rescued from sitting ducks they have become.
They learn they have to contribute something dear to stay alive in the cold waiting for help before they freeze or get scraped off the interstate like people pancakes by the plows. But will it be enough?
There were a lot of characters. Writing a book and including a lot of characters that have unique characteristics with each other was incredible. I salute the author for that!
I don't want to describe every characters because I want this to be a spoiler-free review, but I would say that the character growth of each characters were amazing.
My favorite was Agnes. I love her personality. She has a soft side and a strong side. And I really love that. Did I say that already? Well, yes! Because I really love her character. She was amazing.
The Writing
The author introduced the characters on the first part of the book. I think it took 1/4 of the book just to introduced the characters and little things about their background.
This book was a bit long and sometimes it was dragging. I think writing realistic fictions is challenging because you need to make it look as realistic as possible. (duh! Haha!) So cutting it short, would not help with the plot. All the things the author wrote was needed. I got bored at some parts but I still love every details.
When you based it on the writing, I know that the author did her research. Her research and experience reflected on the writing and the story. The characters attitudes, the places, cars, and everything.
The only thing I noticed that I didn't like, is that the author kept on using her own expressions such as, 'jeezus', 'jeez', etc.. If I'm not mistaken, I think almost every character used them.
I kept on imagining her, because I talked to her many times through email. Sometimes it felt like, I was in that moment with the character and suddenly I would imagine the author herself.
If I remember it correctly, they came from different places, so it was a bit impossible that they had the same expressions where they came from.
I love how the author wrote every details. From Nick to Auggie, it was awesome. For me, it was hard to write a wide range of age.
The Plot
When I read the first few pages, I really find it very interesting. It didn't disappoint. When the author sent me the copy, she wrote that she hopes that I enjoy the read, and I really did. It was funny, sad (sometimes), and really wonderful.
The plot was unique, I haven't read anything like this before so I really love that. I actually hate it when "I read this before" or "the story seems familiar" happens. That's why I really appreciate this book.
A- drift on the road is an engaging fictional story with a nexus for clashing reality and dread. With the raging natural calamity bringing out the different emotions of the character follow along as their all in for the ultimate reality check.
This exciting story in compasses the journey of the characters random encounters as the blizzard leads to pile up on the interstate with no way for help.
The initial chapters introduces us to the characters, their personalities and reason for travelling during that timeline. As the story delve deeper all of them arrive at Agnes' Midnight Truck Stop Diner. The visible signs of an impending bad weather are all there however they don't pay heed to that. Agnes warns them about the same but still the choose to ignore her and move forward. Soon enough they realise the mistake but by them it was too late.
High on drama and adventure this book is a sure-fire reading experience. The dynamic between characters were truly explored as the begin to realise the gravity of the dire situation they have landed themselves in. Some characters you are going to love and some characters you are going to feel like they are adding the stress of the current situation however each one of them were important in the proper development of the plot. As they try to find ways to reach the destination, they begin to seek help and expand their reasoning.
This book was a rollercoaster ride. The characters and their interactions were so engaging that I couldn't stop reading it. Highly recommended it to everyone who loves a good page-turner.
Read it on the kindle. Took half the book to get to the point of the story. A lot of characters to keep track of, characters who were described as different types of people but all behaved and sounded rather alike. There was a lot of chatter and repetition, a bunch of excess that wasn't necessary. Characters would say something and then so would the author or vice a versa. Grammar and punctuation was confusing in places and had to reread parts a few times to make sense of it. Was going to give it one star, but the alternative ending cheered me up so I did bump it up to two. I really wanted to get into it, the idea of the crisis and these strangers coming together got me intrigued, but it was hard-going and excessively wordy and very, very repetitive
A spectacular read! This novel has it all: great, vibrant and realistic characters. A wonderfully woven plot where no detail is left out. A story that keeps you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what happens, and comedy. And it was also heartfelt and real. You can tell this author thought everything through and that she put in a ton of time and research to make every detail accurate and believable. Truly an impressive work! This book would be a great read for everyone, no matter what genre you typically like, no matter your age or gender or what have you. A remarkable piece of literature! Bravo!
