MAGGIE McGUINNESS lives on a corner of Australia in a remote coastal village, surrounded by the ocean and beautiful native forests. She lives with an Australian cattle dog-cross called Tilly and has two young adult offspring who love to visit, especially when it's beach weather.
Maggie writes romantic comedy, chicklit and romance novels and runs a freelance editing business to help pay the bills. She in inching closer to living the dream (i.e. spending less time editing other people's writing and more time doing her own).
Planet Single is an interesting novel about finding yourself again after newly becoming single in middle age. At 40 Katerina has had the shock of her life and embarks on a disastrous, funny, and at times sad journey of love and finding Mr. Right. Chicklit at its finest, the story is sure to keep you on your toes.
Being single is not like Kat remembers. There's so much for her to learn and it becomes quite a journey of sexual awakening, love and loss, finding herself, and accepting the changes that come with experience, both good and bad. You can't help but become attached to Kat and hope for the best, even when she makes questionable choices. She's got a lot going for her though and she's an interesting and likable character. Witty, entertaining, and amusing, this is a fun read.
If you like Chicklit, emotional stories, and funny heroines, this is one you won't want to miss!

I got this eARC from Netgalley in exhange for a honest review This is a type of book where it`s not you it`s me - but with a little bit of: it is you. I was just bored with the story and characters.
A blast of reality wrapped in humour as Kat finds herself single after years of putting up with a boring marriage. Hitting the singles scene while hunting for the second Mr Right becomes a challenge. Entertaining and funny. Every male she came across was eyed up as a possibility for the future and chased with enthusiasm, consequently disappointment became a regular occurrence. Once she decided that finding herself was more important, her life slotted into place; well at least for a short while.
I really enjoyed this book. It had great characters, humor, and relatability. Katerina was an interesting lead with voices in her head that were like the angel and the devil. I’m sure we all have them... Going from a long marriage to being single again isn’t easy. And finding new love in your 40s seems even harder. This book portrays the struggles, ups and downs that come with dating later on in life. I am sad things didn’t work out with McKenzie but, overall, I guess the ending was perfect in its own way.
This book was simply the funniest romantic comedy I’ve ever read. I was laughing out loud and getting looks from people-taking screen shots and sharing with friends! Full of British/Aussie slang and true to life characters this book is impressive. The story of a 40-ish woman whose marriage falls apart and she is thrust into the world of modern singleness. It’s charming, funny, and I simply loved it and I hope this author comes out with more—and I hope to see more of Kat’s adventures in the art of finding new love!
Poor Kat has seriously bad luck with men! I really loved this fun story about a middle-aged woman, Kat, who is thrust back into the dating scene. While I say fun, I mean for the reader. Kat is put through the ringer from the start when she finds out her husband wants a divorce. At so many places my heart really broke for her, as I wanted some things to work out. I won’t say which did or didn’t because there were quite a few surprises.
The character took this to another level. Kat aside, I think my other favorites were … well, Kat. Voice one and two. The voices in her head that argued, and at times agreed. They added some much-needed levity. I was under the impression I’d met some real winners, but seriously, these men, I was glad to see a few get what they deserved. Though… never mind, you’ll see.
If you are looking for a quirky piece of chick-lit about being single after forty, look no further. You’ll have a lot of fun, and maybe cry a few times with this one.
What a delight to read! I loved following Katarina as she lands on Planet Single after many years of marriage and 2 boys. Through the shocking split she goes from being at stay at home mom, bored out of her mind with the numbness of being so controlled through daily monotony. As Kat grows into her own role, she discovers parts of her that had been locked down for so many years she had forgotten they existed. Through the prompting of her new friends, in her new life, Kat tries her hand at online dating, but discovers that being single and 40 is not a game. Following her through a delightful series of dinners, drinks, and bad dates, McGuinness keeps the story flowing and the emotional connection intact. I laughed with her, I cried with her, I hugged my kindle when I wanted to hug her.
This was a fantastic rom-com chick-flick that wasn't boring or predictable. It was funny, engaging, and unexpected. A delightful read.
Great title, cover and writing aren't all that make this book a must for your To Be Read List. It's smartly written and, at least for the first half, laugh-out-loud funny! Maggie McGuinness has a way with words. And she is a wizard at character building. I loved the ex-husband (I could easily picture the type and it made me laugh so hard that Kat had resigned herself to "loving" him before he dropped his bombshell). Kat's reaction to crisis and the knocks that came from online dating were priceless. For anyone who is happily married and wonders what would happen if, through no fault of their own, they were forced to reinvent themselves, this story is a version that will shock and placate all at once. It is a tipsy turvy ride, and I'll admit a tad on the long side (I found myself skimming through the last 20%, anxious to know whether she would ever find someone special enough), but super fun. The British/Australian expressions alone kept me coming back to the book night after night.
Single life – the second time around. Was looking for love always this complicated?
"The night I landed on Planet Single, I had no idea I was about to blast off from the familiar married landscape. If I’d known, I could have packed a few essentials like some nicer undies, a dating guidebook and a much thicker skin, but I didn’t have the chance. I was dumped – defenceless – into a strange new world."
Relatable, quirky, and seriously funny, Planet Single is an Australian romantic comedy about starting over after divorce. Join Katerina as she sets off to create a new life, meeting a succession of dodgy dates, two contrary inner voices, a handsome detective, and a whole tribe of young and sexy colleagues. Who knew selling stationery could be so much fun?
Get ready for an emotional rollercoaster ride of dating adventure, laugh-out-loud humour, and heart-wrenching moments. Will Kat ever find what she’s looking for?
This was a wonderful read very engaging. The characters were well developed and likeable. The only thing I did not like was how often the character referenced her age and how old that was. I did not think mid 40’s was old. Other than that it was a good read.
Thank you to Netgalley and the author for an advanced copy of this book for an honest review.
Overall, I very much enjoyed this romantic comedy. It’s the first book I’ve read by Maggie McGuiness, but I’ll be looking for more..
I really liked all the characters. Each one was well developed and unique in a way that added life and dimension to the story. The reason I didn’t give 5 full stars is that I felt the story drag a little bit in the second half.it felt that the story kinda stalled and wasn’t progressing, but, to be fair, that’s true to Kat’s life and reflects exactly how she felt. ... This book is 4.5 stars for me, and we’ll worth reading. Especially the end! The end is perfect
Yes this is a long read. Very relate-able as it charts the adventures of a newly separated woman. The author manages to bring in a lot of characters without ever confusing us about who they are.
I was impatient with the early part of the book and was just about to give up when it got darker. By the end I was much more invested in the main characters and began to really love it. I got a bit turned off by references to blow jobs etc. but that’s just me.
Thrust back into the world of dating, poor Kat finds herself in uncharted territory. The characters were solid and so was the story. It had one laughing out loud with the quirky antics. Although this is not a type of book I usually read, I did find this one to be a nice adventure outside my comfort zone. It brought to life the world of dating after a certain age or after a divorce. I look forward to reading more from this author. I received a copy through Netgalley. A review was not required.
I had a lot of fun reading Planet Single it’s light and funny with a good storyline. Kat the heroine is sparkling and witty as she sets about tackling the perilous world of being on the dating market again after forty. Her two alter egos voice one and voice two are only there to help or are they? Great holiday read and as good a pick me up as a cool glass of Pimms on a summer afternoon. Angela Cairns
Bad kissers, Sexy males, handsome detectives- they do sound quite intriguing. It is not a love story, it's more about finding yourself through loss, love, experience. The character Kat is quite relatable, she's not picture-perfect. She makes mistakes, picks herself up, and goes on. I was rooting for her. The story was kinda like chick-lit s the narration was at times amusing and at times kinda slow and steady. overall, I really liked it.
40-yr-old Kat finds herself suddenly single after her husband reveals he is having an affair, thrusting onto Planet Single. This book was an amusing read. The humour worked well with the story. Although the story was a little slow it parts, it was thoroughly enjoyable and I enjoyed the Australian setting.
I loved this book from beginning to end. It made me laugh, and relate so much with Kat, even though I'm not single. It's real life, and Kat deals with it in a way that most of us would, or would like to. She's funny, makes mistakes, and learns the hard way. Maggie McGuinness has a way with words that draws you in and makes you want to keep reading to see what happens next. Loved it!
This intriguing story of Katerina, a newly divorced forty-something trying to find her way in today's world of singles, is a fun read! She's witty and sad, clever and clumsy, all at the same time. A very well-written book that makes me glad I'm still married! Highly recommended.
When unexpectedly dumped by her boring husband Katerina finds out what dating in your 40's is all about. So why not write a dating guide about it including love in a lot of wrong places with the wrong men. This is a fun RomCom.
Funny is an understatement. You can pick up this book on a cloudy day, and it'll bring out the sunshine. Very well written. Kat is a great character and so were the bunch of hunks. Lots of laughter, romance and a happy ending. You will not be disappointed.
Funny and fun! This is a novel tackling the outcomes of dating at a later age and of all the pitfalls it can entail. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
It look a little bit to get into but I really loved the characters and the story. This book felt like an accurate depiction of someone re-entering the dating scene after their marriage ending. Dating is tough and dating later on in life, can be even harder. It is a charming and delightful read!
A first time read for this author. I really loved the book. It was a longer than usual read for me but I don't think the story dragged in any way. I look forward to reading more from Maggie McGuinness.
A touch of reality is brought to bear in a book disguised as a comedy-romance. There is a lot of truth in this book and it is great to see the author addressing the reality of starting over in the world of dating.
A wonderful read. I found this book very engaging and the character engaging. Funny and sad that the same time. Makes me happy I am still married. Keep up the good work!
A very complicated life story of a lady who is finding her way after a loveless and stultifying marriage. A satisfying conclusion is why I gave high marks.
Nicely written. It wasn’t exactly what I had hoped it would be, but maybe can be fun for other people and more relatable to them. Overall interesting read.
Talk about bad luck with men! Kat definitely had it. This was a fun story to read.
It is the story of a Kat a newly single woman who gets thrown back into the dating scene when she finds out that her husband wants a divorce. Being single now, she's 40-ish, is not the way that she remembers it.
This book was very funny and is a must read. Anyone who is going through a divorce and finds themselves getting back into the dating scene must read this. But also any who just wants to have a good laugh.
I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
