Yavapai County in Arizona Territory was bigger than Pennsylvania, and Sheriff Sam Hicks and his three deputies were the only law that most of its residents knew. When China Joe's gang knocked off the huge cash shipment heading for Prescott, Sheriff Hicks left his office unsure if this would be his last job one way or the other. He knew he had to retire soon, he didn't expect to be alive in six months, whether it was from a .44 or his failing heart.
Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.
The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.
As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.
My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"
Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.
I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)
"And what did the doctor say?"
"I'll ask him when we get back."
"Yes, you will."
I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.
Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.
So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.
The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.
Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.
Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.
Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.
They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.
It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.
They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.
I tried. A great plot was outlined in the synopsis. I love the era it was written in and the geographical location where the story takes place. The author has written a lot of books so he probably has a fan base. I could not get into the story because the grammar, word selection, and most of all, the unprofessional use of commas made it hard to read and understand. The first few chapters were filled with unnecessary words like “So,” and “Then,” and there were commas where they did not belong. Those commas made the book hard to read. My mind and reading would pause with each comma so reading became jerky. This took my focus away from the story. There were off the wall phrases and descriptions that I had to stop reading to figure out. Example: “committed a job” meaning “committed a crime.” Great idea and setting, but I could not read it.
One of the most heartwarming and family-friendly novels I have ever had the opportunity to enjoy. A very touching story with plenty of gunplay throughout the entire book. I was more than happy with the ongoing adventures and gunfights from beginning to end. Never a dull moment throughout the entire book. Mr. Petit has that uncanny ability to satisfy his readers appetite for excitement, yet appeals to their full expectations of successful entertainment.
Definitely a five star masterpiece, which most certainly appeals to all readers appetite for exciting adventures. I was certainly impressed with the character selection, as Sheriff Sam has that magnetic personality to enhance his ongoing investigation, and the bad guys create exceptional diversions to enhance the entire story.
Too, the storylines always encouraged me to press forward in anticipation of what thrilling adventure would be coming up next. One of the more heartwarming adventures I have had the opportunity to read of our old western folklore.
Definitely recommend this book to all readers who love truly exciting old western adds with romance, gunplay and truly exciting family fun. I definitely agree with Sheriff Sam, who believes in justice as a measure to serve the needs of the area, and not just attest power. Cannot ever recall a C. J. Petit book that wasn't well thought out and met the every whim, and desire, of his legion of readers. Great story!
Sam Hicks had been the sheriff of Yuavaqui County, New Mexico for thirty years. Had kept the peace and administered justice always keeping true to his heart.
It was his country and he knew it and the people in it like family. His two sons and his son-in-law were his deputies and soon the day would come and he would retire and his oldest son would put on his badge and take over. But first he had to rescue Jessica and her son, a two year-old named Max from an unsavory Pinkerton Agent bent on kidnapping him and returning him to the lying mother who claimed Jessica had kidnapped him. Oh, and this was in the midst of hunting down and killing two gangs of ruthless murderers and bank robbers that had come to Sam's county to ply their trade. Dealing with them was easy by comparison to dealing with Jessica and young Max. First, to insure their safety, he had them leave their little ramshackle one room shack in the desert and move into his own ranch house. It would work, he insisted, because he worked 7 days a week and he could sleep in the jail at night until he resolved Jessica's dilemma as to who was trying to take her son away from her and why. But nothing from that day went as planned. Read on. A truly heartwarming story takes over from here. Just another feel-good story from CJ Petit.
C. J. Petit did it again describing grown people problems, which are many. Mean dehumanizing wives, cheaters, gold-diggers are exposed in this drama. Women who were mistreated and cowed into a sexual deviant abuse or lose their teaching position, as you read this story that problem was taken care of by teachers at that school. "Et tu Portia" people get tired of being mistreated constantly. One of the main character Jessica had intimacy problems and those problems could only be solved by herself and Sam Hicks patience which he has shown throughout his marriage to Wilma his dead wife of fourteen years, how mean and dehumanizing she was toward Sheriff Sam Hicks, which caused him to avoid any type of courtship..strange what men and women can do to each other's when it comes to intimacy and companionship..they just kill it, stomping on it and just plain stupidity...Women are from Mars and men are from Pluto...
LAW ENFORCEMENT, KIDNAPPING, OUTLAWS, LOVE & FAMILY
5 STARS for this Old West Era Drama that takes place around 1882 & for about 12 yrs that follows in the life of Sheriff Sam Hicks & family in the Arizona Territory. There are Surprising Shootouts with Outlaws of all kinds, Spectacular detailed descriptions of landscape & sun rises/settings, not to leave out the night sky with it's full beauty of stars & different phases of the moon. Family love shines through where you can almost feel the love & sheer enjoyment from any of them just sharing company of each other; besides the transition to the workplace where they all do there share of work and show respect to & for others who aren't related. There is high drama with the wealthy worthy of any day/time-soap opera, smugness, action, including involving the Pinkertons. Give it a read I think you will really love it, I did plus I read it straight through could not put it down until the end.
As usual C. J. Petit has delivered another great story!
He really pushes the premise, in this book, that justice and law are not necessarily the same thing. I totally agree, especially in the U.S. where our law system is a competition, rather than justice. I'm not sure the solution in providing justice outside of the law in that it could lead to vigilante "justice." But for the sake of this story, you cheer the good guy on who provides justice because he happens to be a just man. There's a sweet and healing romance, and a mild bedroom scene. Of course, it's a western, so there is a lot of shooting and killing and guns, hats, and horses.
I'd rate this PG-17 for the sex scene; otherwise it would be PG-13 for a little language and a lot of violence.
An unusual Sheriff. A greedy family. Another family of values. An abused woman on the run. You got it all here
I love cowboy stories. This kept me glued to the action, human interaction between the characters. I appreciate the discretion of the author on the very intimate love scenes. Tastefully done. A lot of twists and turns. Very suspenseful entertainment. And a surprising ending. Do people always get what they deserve? Can you be happy if you have it all? Kidnapping, Murder, extreme wealth has its own gifts and problems. Love that endures. This book has all that and much more! Treat yourself. Settle in. Enjoy...oh and then off your phone!!
All of CJP's books are definitely worth reading but each on is very different from each of the others, I think I've read almost every one of them and have most in my own library. Sam and Jessica' story was a very tender story of a sheriff who definitely know the difference between what legal service was and what true justice was all about. CJP never disappoints and this was one that was hard to put down from start to finish. BRAVO 👏👏BRAVO 👏👏 His books are so good that it makes it so hard to wait for the next one to get here. Thank you so much for what you do and the accuracy of the time and events that were happening at that time in our country's history.
A Western About A Sheriff, a Woman and Her Son, the Law and Justice
CJP. Had penned his 45th western, which is about a Sheriff, his two sons and daughter. His two sons and his son-in-law are his deputies. They are after two gangs of outlaws when the Sheriff finds a woman and her son hiding in the desert. The two gangs are subdued and the woman moved to the Sheriff's ranch. Then the real trouble begins. The family with money, the Pinkertons and other factors are encountered as the Sheriff and woman begin to fall for each other. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
Sam was chasing the China Joe gang when his horse died out from under him
As he walked carrying his two rifles and his canteen he spotted shanty in the rocks and went over to investigate. He knocked on the door and the shotgun came out with the woman's voice saying who are you and what do you want. He's identified himself as a sheriff and asked her if he could borrow her horse to get into town as his just died. She gave her permission so that was how Sam met Jessica. Sam had two gangs he was after and Other people were after Jessica.
I've read every novel Petit has written. As prolific a writer as he is, you'd think that just one would be somehow less. Hasn't happened yet and I'm convinced it never will. Sam Hicks is a strong protagonist with an iron will for justice, regardless of the letter of the law. Those who cross him once tend never to do it again. After all of the hostilities it was not disappointing to see it end for Sam.
Loved the book.I have read many of your books Mr. Petit, enjoyed everyone of them immensely. They have brought me much joy and entertainment.Thank you for writing such great stories. The characters are well developed and fun to read about.Their stories keep you glued to the pages for hours, not realizing how much time has passed. Thanks again for making an old man happy just reading a book.
Wow, that was EXCELLENT!!!!! I'm into reading a lot of different series. I took a chance on a single story and found that I should do that more often. This was a perfect story and read. It had so much meaning and you feel like you were there during the entire book. I'll start reading single books instead of just serieses now. I totally recommend this story to everyone.
Wonderful C. J. Petit Novel as usual should be rated more than 5 stars
Reading Mr.Petit's novels has been my evening entertainment since I read one of his fantastic novels right after he started adding them to my Kindle. They have spoiled me for other authors and have not read anyone else since starting to read his. And I have between 3-400 novels from other authors that have gone unread since I started Mr. Petit's novels.
I love westerns as I grew up on all things western. My dad loved western books and movies. We had horses growing up and my dad was a mounted deputy sherriff. I really enjoy reading C.J. Petit’s books as they are exciting and romantic without the use of a lot of cursing. That’s very hard to find in our society these days. So thank you for keeping it clean.
C.J. Petit is an excellent story teller, and I found this and other books he has written, enjoyable and a fast read. There are a lot of bad guys killed by the hero of this story, although it might be too many in a short span of time. A major drawback in this book, was the spelling errors and word omissions.
There is always some western action, but his stories are usually gentle and calm. The book is fairly well written with a few minor story errors. This book has more writing errors that interrupt your reading, trying to figure out what is being said.
First of all I will gladly pass a long to my friends that they will more than just like Petit's books they will not be able to put them down for long at a time. For that reason I give him a 5 Star rating and I can't find anything that I disliked about his stories.
Never knowing true love, 37 year old unwed Jessica is running with her two old son. Hiding, alone, afraid, and no where to go she knows the Pinkertons will find her soon. But Sam the county sheriff discovers her. Can he save her son plus free her from years of the scars of fear? A difficult if not impossible task awaits both.
Good story, a good woman discovering that sex can be pretty good. That's a different theme for a western. The shoot em up parts were also good. So Winchester made a lever action in 50. caliber? At a decent range that would hurt! Once upon a time, I owned and shot a 58 cal muzzleloader. With 60 grains of Pryrodex, it would reach out and leave a mark. Fun shooting!!
Virtually every book has a "good" guy and a "bad" guy...in "Sam's County" we have pure evil personified having to face off against a real hero who doesn't get confused by law, but has the discernment to know simply right from wrong. Good story development including the leaving of a legacy.
I look forward to every Petit book. I especially love the romance. The men are so thoughtful and respectful. Love the action of the gun fights. Good reading for sure.
This was one of Mr. Petit's best books. Great story line and great characters. This is a definite page turner and definitely holds your attention.Would highly recommend this book and all others written by this author to all that enjoys a great western story.
CJP continues to write great Western novels that are full of suspense and surprises. I have read 45 of his novels and look forward to reading number 46 when published. I highly recommend this author.
There's justice and there's the law. In Sam's county, justice prevails over t g e law. Great story but needs more proof reading. Eli Drummond is also referred to as Ira. Abigail Drummond is also referred to as Elizabeth. Confusing.
This story was a good read. All the characters in this story are realistic and filled out the story with vigor. Action and adventure that starts off with the first page and doesn't stop till the last makes this story outstanding.
You always find a way to bring tears to my eyes. You are a great writer and I have all your books. I follow you so I order the next book as soon as it is out. Keep up the good work.
I loved it. I could not put it down. It was fast action and very interesting. It was the right amount of romance and all of the characters in the family. I love a family western. Thank you for writing such a clean and interesting western.
C. J. Petit runs around in circles again. This is a fantastic book with all its twists and turns. In the end love wins out. I will recommend this book and this author to as many people as I can. Great read!
Sheriff Sam Hicks is after the outlaw gang of China Joe when he discovers a woman and young boy living in a shack. He soon is involved in trying to protect them from a ruthless woman trying to have the boy kidnapped.
