3.5/5 Great concept almost fully realized. I’ve long felt my own need for a broad overview of history. Like going back to middle school for the basics. Course material thereafter grew increasingly specific, and it’s far too easy to become niche-oriented in your knowledge and interests. And so ten years after purchasing this, I finally read it!
This historical summary is well-written and richly illustrated. The detail is snack-sized but enough to drive you forward without bogging down. And there are lengthy lists at the back of popes and kings and presidents. My main criticism is that the timeline (running through the entire atlas along the top) was sub-optimally executed. The dates didn’t relate to each other in a given section and seemed random (i.e. not connected to the text below it). A missed opportunity — although not something easily remedied, I must admit. I will certainly look back at this and also plan to seek out other similar treatments.
