Clare and Emmett are a sweet couple and I enjoyed getting to know them as they struggle through obstacles separately and together. They have an affectionate rapport and gentle banter, but when it comes to communicating their more difficult feelings or sharing about their past, they have more to learn. Their experiences in Italy draw them closer together, but also brings their hidden conflicts to the surface for them to deal with. Emmett's family dynamics are a source of unhappiness for them both, especially his father's rigid expectations. Hope for her new pregnancy makes Clare stand up for herself more than she had in the past, and I appreciated seeing Emmett's growth as he becomes his own man and the leader of his family. The historical details were intriguing and I was especially moved by the scenes of the earthquake and the devastation there at the turn of the century.
(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)
What a compelling book! The setting of the earthquake and it's aftermath was heartrending. The circumstances brought about real growth in the characters, both individually and together. Emmett and Claire were a love match, but had grown apart through misunderstandings and lack of communication. I was grateful to learn about that part of their relationship through the flashbacks. I felt like I really got to know them and better understand their journey. I loved watching them come together again during such a trying time. It wasn't easy, but they got there. I loved their story!
I received a complimentary copy of the book, which I voluntarily reviewed. I have given my honest opinion.
I'm not sure what to think of this one. I was eager to read a historical romance set against the backdrop of the historical event of the earthquake in Messina, Italy in 1908.
Clare is an American heiress married to Emmet the Earl of Linnwood. Their marriage is in trouble due to the 2 miscarriages and a severe lack of communication. (Seriously, these guy really need to talk)
This book didn't live up to my expectations, but that may be more on me than the book. I was hoping for more about the earthquake. It mostly acted as a catalyst for the changes the H/h made in themselves. Secondly, the H was a man who lived only to please his father. It was hard to respect a man who caters to his father like a little boy. (He does finally grow some cajones). Third, the MCs had so many misunderstandings and it felt like willful obliviousness. No one can be that dense. Have a conversation! Lastly, the H's father makes a 180° turnaround in the final act of the book. Going from the austere, judgemental, serious man to a weeping emotional man who secretly loved everyone but didn't know how to express it. It didn't feel authentic.
This book is 100% safe, and is clean with kisses only.
*Note* There are religious references to God and several points of dialogue written in italics that are prayers offered by the MCs for guidance and help. Not in your face, but enough to make it worth mentioning.
My emotions were all over the place with this read. I admit I shed a few tears here and there. I laughed. I may have said, "grrrrr" to Clare and Emmett a couple times. I'm telling you, emotions all over the place. But it was so worth it. I loved it! I became emotionally invested in these two and their struggles, their misunderstandings, their love, their sorrows, their emotions and all the outside forces pushing on them and muddling their lives.
I thought it was a beautiful read and a great reminder for all relationships to be open and talk, to not hold back needs and sorrows, that healing can come through sharing and lifting each other. That might not make a lot of sense for you if you haven't read the book but I think it applies to everyone. We all have our struggles and sorrows and holding in the pain and fear and everything else just causes everything inside us to build and tear at us. Having someone (family member, friend, significant other) to help share our burdens with and who can lighten and lift us, helps so much.
I really liked how this book had a dual time line, showing us the present time for these characters as well as their courtship and early marriage. I loved how the author slowly revealed the information that gave us all the pieces to the puzzle as to why Clare and Emmett were struggling when they seemed to be so in love in their courtship and marriage.
There are moments of peril as they are in caught up in an earthquake and struggling to protect each other and help friends and others around them. But it added a great depth to the storyline.
I highly recommend grabbing this one and enjoying it if you get the chance and enjoy this type of story. Love it!
Content: Clean. Some mild peril. Some mild innuendos with a married couple but nothing graphic, very tastefully written. This book does talk about miscarriages.
I received a copy from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Yet another wonderful historical from Stacy Henrie! It was easy to get pulled into this story and I loved the characters. I could feel for them and their struggles. I loved all the little parts of the story (like how they both had misunderstandings about the other because of a certain reason…won't say what.) ;)
The story had some intense moments, as well, which made it even more difficult to put down. The ending was great and now I'm just waiting on the next book. Cannot wait!
All in all, I loved this book and recommend it!

A marriage of love turns lonely only a couple of years later. Can they find a second chance at love while dealing with the aftermath of a devastating earthquake?
I loved this story and was thrilled when Emmett finally decided to listen to the wise counsel his grandfather had given him as a young boy, "You have your own unique strengths, Emmett. Different than your father's or mine or anyone else's. God knows what they are. And He will help you and place you in situations to learn them for yourself." I inwardly cheered when Emmett became his own person--when he quit trying to live up to the unrealistic expectations of his father, and competing with a brother who died before Emmett was born.
Poor Clare suffered through 2 miscarriages feeling alone in her mourning and grief. Her husband's family wasn't very welcoming and treated her as if she married Emmett only for his title, although they didn't mind using her money to restore their estate. Add in their continued friendship with a (jealous) woman who had hoped to marry Emmett, and Clare was rightfully feeling insecure about her husband's feelings for her.
I like that the chapters told both Emmett and Clare's points of view, and enjoyed the flashbacks telling us the story how they met and fell in love. I especially enjoyed reading the parts that take place after the earthquake because that's when Clare and Emmett show their true selves, and their kindness towards others shines. Taking care of their friends, taking in the orphaned girl, helping the villagers affected by the earthquake, etc.
It took quite awhile (and a lot of yelling at them on my part) before Emmett and Clare finally talked about all the things that should've already been discussed--Emmett's true feelings about the miscarriages, why Clare suddenly left England and went to Italy. I'm glad all of that was taken care of before Emmett's parents unexpectedly arrived in Italy, and I was beyond thrilled when Emmett found his backbone and stood up to his father. It was long past due. I loved this wonderful historical romance.
I received a complimentary copy and chose to review it. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
How had it come to that? Only twenty months before, meeting Emmett Markham, the Earl of Linwood, had brought such joy in Clare's life. An American heiress coming from trade had few chances of making a good match in New York, so Clare Herschel and her mother had traveled all the way to England. Snagging the son of a marquess had never entered Clare's mind; it was Emmett, the man, who had enchanted her. Emmett's father wanted his son to marry money, and Lord Hadwell was pleased with his son's choice. Emmett couldn't believe his luck: he never thought his father would approve of the woman he loved. But months went by and still there was no heir. After Clare's two miscarriages, she left for Sicily, hoping the milder climate would help her heal. Emmett didn't seem to care; had their love been just an illusion? When Emmett arrived in Italy without warning, Clare should have been pleased. Instead seeing that Emmett was only doing his father's bidding angered her. The marquess wants Emmett to seek a seat in Parliament, thus bring back his wife to England. Appearances, and all that. Before they even have time to talk things over, an earthquake hits Messina, and survival becomes paramount.
With the story alternating between past and present, we go through the gamut of emotions and I felt it was the ideal way to understand what Clare and Emmett go through. The earthquake in Messina did happen in 1908 and provides an ideal backdrop to showcase the couple's growth. Ms. Henrie knows how to hold her reader captive and maintain a steady pace, all the while keeping a healthy balance between the light and the dark.
BENEATH AN ITALIAN SKY is a fascinating and heartwrenching look at how a happy marriage can crumble under the weight of expectations. It is a true second chance romance, but I believe it will have many of us taking a closer look at ourselves. This was a very difficult book for me to review. I think I am just too overwhelmed to express my feelings properly, so I will leave it to you to judge how fabulous BENEATH AN ITALIAN SKY is.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This Regency romance features Emmet and Clare. They’ve been married for 14 months when the book begins, but Clare has unexpectedly left to live in his villa in Sicily while her husband is gone making repairs on one of their other properties. Emmet is devastated and questions his wife’s love. Did she only marry him for his title, as he overheard? The questions haunt him. Meanwhile, Clare tries to piece together her broken heart away from her husband, who refused to ever grieve with her over her last two miscarriages. Living with his domineering father and cold mother and sisters has shattered her confidence over the last year. She couldn’t take one more day of it, especially when she learns she is expecting again and the doctor suggests a warmer climate may be better for her health. She believes Emmet only married her for her money, on his father’s demand. The love-match she thought she struck has become spoiled in their time together with his family and her miscarriages. I won’t go into detail about the plot, but the story grabbed me from the get-go and didn’t let me go until I read The End. It is a riveting plot, an intriguing setting, lovable characters, lots of action with the earthquake that happens soon after Emmet reunites with his wife, and lots of plot twists and heart-tugging. I adored this book! It’s the kind I’m thrilled to read and journey with the characters through their misunderstandings, questions, and heartache to reach happily-ever-after. I highly recommend this one. There wasn’t any detail I didn’t enjoy. It was a literary feast for my romance-heart.
I've been looking forward to this book for so long. Well, ever since the last book I read in this series. This book officially released yesterday so you can pick it up too!
I love when books are based around real historical events. This one is set in Sicily when a massive, devastating earthquake hits. The upheaval, turmoil and desperation were clearly present and I was caught up in the story, the characters and the emotion.
Both Clare and Emmett are so insecure. They don't have very good communication skills which of course leads to so much misunderstanding and the only way to work through the mess is to talk it out. That proves to be a bit difficult with an earthquake, trying to stay alive, and oh, a reporter who watches their every move. But both Clare and Emmett are good people, trying to find their way and prove their worth. I was really grateful to have both points of view throughout the story so I could know them both and love them equally. The flashbacks helped provide the base for their initial love and gave me hope as a reader.
Even though this story is full of tragedy, it never felt overwhelming. This author has a magical, peaceful way of writing. The words fall gently and I love that. I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait for the next one coming out in the fall.
Content: mild peril, death, kissing

This time period and the American heiresses are so fascinating to me. It seems that a lot of people in Europe long to find the American dream and those who come back a generation or two later, to find their matches, interests me greatly.
Clare has known hard times and has fallen deeply for Emmett, even though they make a good match and it pleases the marquess. But she's also known loss and some of those recent losses have driven this couple apart.
In a unique twist where the couple is already married, but lonely, a natural disaster is a catalyst in giving them a second chance. The feelings evoked were poignant, tender, and slightly nostalgic, yet I couldn't help but root for this couple to give each other another chance and to open up, communicate, and to forsake all others in order to cleave to each other.
These characters are multifaceted, with deep-rooted expectations to dislodge, but don't underestimate the power of love. I love how the story flashed back to their courtship, as this helps the reader understand how they got to where they are. This touching tale is told in a way that embedded these people smack in the middle of my heart and soul.
Content: mild romance; mild+ moments of danger/peril; very mild elements of religion

“Beneath an Italian Sky (An American Heiress #2) is a fascinating novel by Stacy Henrie, an unknown author to this listener.
Clare Herschel, an American heiress and Emmet Markham, the Earl of Linwood were a love matched and loving couple. Somewhere during their marriage, communication between the two slowly dissipated and their union became very distant. They had grown apart, he wanting to gain the praise of his father and she unable to produce an heir after two miscarriages. After Clare's two miscarriages, she left for Sicily, hoping the climate would help her heal and keep the growing pregnancy she had growing inside. Both characters needed to overcome what they believe are underlying failures in their marriage.
Wanting to attain his aspirations through Emmet, his father orders him to Italy to get his wife. Crumbling under the dictates of his father, he ventures to Italy, but when he arrived without warning, Clare became standoffish and angry. She later found out that rather than coming to her out of love and missing her, he was only doing his father's bidding by wanting Emmett to seek a seat in Parliament and bring her back to England for appearances. Not having a chance to discuss the matter, an earthquake hits Messina, and they both must put aside all misgivings and hidden conflicts to survive this devastation.
In the beginning of this story, I did not know what to think about the H/h of the story. I was grateful for the flashbacks throughout the story that allowed the reader to learn more about the couple and their relationship. Lack of communication played a big part in the distance between them. There is a lot of emotions…sorrow, pain, fear, worry, anger and joy. The couple seem to be so in love, however lack of communications, misunderstanding, and outside forces managed to beat down their relationship. There were moments that my heart ached and eyes teared for wanting them to patch their differences and bring back the love they once had. I also loved how when they had moments of uncertainty, that they knew they had to protect one another and help their friends and others in the group. In the end, the aftermath of the earthquake allowed the H/h to understand that communication is key, to stand up for themselves and not let others direct their paths in life. I was so happy the couple had a chance to talk prior to outside forces interfering into their lives and them reaching their HEA.
Ms. Henrie has a wonderful story that has a well-written plot and spot on with her research of the historical events of the earthquake in Italy at the turn of the century. Kelly Burke, new narrator to this listener, did a very good job of narration and the pace was just right. This story grabbed me from beginning to end. It is a clean and tasteful historical romance with a touch of religious undertones (i.e. prayers etc.), plot twists and loveable main characters. It is heart-wrenching and exceeded my expectations. Recommended Read.
I dove into this read not quite sure what to expect. I was intrigued by the reconciling married couple romance and the Italian setting but didn't quite have a grasp for how this story would play out. I'm the kind of reader who likes to know what I'm fictionally leaping into so I hope y'all appreciate my bravery venturing blindly into Stacy Henrie's latest. :-)
What I found was sheer brilliance! What an emotionally compelling story! Impeccable crafting blends 'present day' (historically speaking -- 1908) with flashbacks of courtship and early wedded bliss. And, oh, the waves of hurt caused by misunderstandings and plain lack of communication skewered this reader's tender heart. Clare and Emmett are barely more than honeymooners! Such a lot of sorrow to pack into their first year as man and wife.
And then the earthquake hits and that brings a whole new dimension to their story. Spellbound and breathless, that's me after devouring Beneath an Italian Sky in one sitting. Could. Not. Put. It. Down. Henrie is a storytelling genius!
While I didn't enjoy the characters as much as book one in this series, it was still good. It's fascinating that so many "new money" American heiresses went to England to find titled husbands. And the potential suitors were certainly happy for the money to keep their family estates alive. Another enjoyable piece in this novel was that it was based upon the Messina, Italy earthquake that occurred December 28, 1908. What a tragic event in which 80,000-100,000 people lost their lives.
I really enjoyed this book. It grabbed my attention from page one and held it until the end!
I like historical fiction books that make me want to do my own bit of research about the event and period written about and this story did just that.
I liked the characters Emmett and Clare as they developed into their relationship with each other and those around them. They were good and loving but had to work around a domineering father, and miscommunication skills and their own life experience . There was a quote from a character “strength is found in forging ahead” and with trial and error the characters do seem to develop into that very quote.
They each have past experiences that they have/want to share but are afraid or have learned that it can best kept closed in to not burden others.
I liked how they worked together during a tragedy and rose above their individual trials and grief.
Good clean romance and I have now discovered a new series of books to read!
This story was fantastic. I remember reading Night at the Opera and loving the intrigue and suspense in addition to the romance. Beneath an Italian Sky had just as much pull to the writing and the characters and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Claire & Emmett thought they had made a love match, but all seems to be unraveling as they cannot even speak to each other without wounds and anger. As this story begins, we start in the past and chapters alternate between both Claire & Emmett in their stories both before they meet and in the first months of marriage as well as their experiences in Italy.
I was touched by many aspects of this story, not the least of which was the brilliant setting. The imagery was vivid and descriptions detailed and full. I was completely submerged in the storytelling. The characters themselves were deep and clung desperately to what they thought they knew. I always love a good redemption story and this one was outstanding. It made me laugh, made me sad, but best of all - made me think.
Heartwarming, well-written story not only about a couple finding their way back to each other, but a man coming to understand what it MEANS to be a man — and not what his father expects of him. This book also had a little bit of history I didn't know about — the tragic earthquake in Messina in 1908. I loved how Emmet was able to rally the survivors together to help the others.
I also liked how it told the story going back and forth between now and when Clare and Emmet met, moving closer and closer on the timeline, so that we understood how they go to this point in their marriage.
It's great story of love, loss, family, and trusting that God has a plan for all of us.
I loved this story and all of the wonderful characters. I enjoyed all of the struggles as well as the triumphs this family endured. This is a sweet and clean love story.
With a beautiful scenic backdrop, interesting characters, and a charming story, readers are sure to fall in love with a piece of Italy’s history and swoon for the romance that oozes from the pages of this book!
Emmett Markham, the Earl of Linwood, thought he'd made a love match with American heiress Clare Herschel, but when he finds that she has traveled to Sicily without him, he wonders if she actually cares for him. His father, who wants him to run for a seat in the House of Commons, insists that Emmett needs to bring her home and present the image of a happy family on his campaign trail, so he heads to Sicily, not knowing why Clare left or what it will take to bring her back. After two miscarriages, Clare is afraid to lose another pregnancy, so when her doctor suggests a warmer climate might help her avoid another miscarriage, she heads to Sicily. Since Emmett has seemed indifferent to their previous losses, she can't bear to tell him of their pregnancy. When Emmett arrives in Sicily, Clare doesn't know what to think--and she doesn't have time to sort out her feelings before an earthquake strikes. Working together to help those around them, Clare and Emmett find that maybe their marriage can be a happy one after all.
The historical setting for this story was so interesting. It was fascinating to see details of the earthquake and its aftermath. I also really liked how the story alternated between the past (letting us see Clare and Emmett's happy courtship and then the decline of their marriage) and the present. I found Clare and Emmett to be well-developed, with good reasons for the choices they make. This was just a really gripping story, and I really enjoyed it.
I read an ARC provided by the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Book two in the Edwardian Heiress Series, Beneath an Italian Sky, is every bit as delightful as the first book in the series. It is written about an already married couple that due to some outside forces feel lonely. It’s about coming to truly know each other and gain independence from expectations and the push and pull of relatives. Readers will easily be able to relate to the characters and their struggles. This story is also fascinating in that it takes place in Italy during a huge and devastating earthquake. Stacy Henrie has a keen knack for exquisite storytelling that will cause readers to immediately fall into her stories. Readers will not want to miss this fabulous story!!

This beautifully written novel has complex characters that grow throughout the book. It evokes lots emotions as the characters struggle with life and tragedy and learning to communicate with each other. WONDERFUL!
I loved this book! The author did a really great job with her characters, settings, and the plot of this one. I loved the way I felt like I was in Italy during the Italian parts and especially the tension of the earthquake parts.
Let’s start with the characters. Our two main characters are Emmett and Clare. These two are newlyweds and they’ve had a bit of a misunderstanding, which was started and helped along by a jealous woman. It’s always sad to see love pushed aside by those types of things. Anyway, the misunderstanding leaves Clare in Italy and Emmett by himself in England. And he has to deal with his father.
There is a lot of complicated backstory between Emmett and his family, especially his father. And I loved the way that made the story richer and more full. It was a bit appalling the way his father had no consideration for him being an adult. He was just expected to do whatever he said. Um…I might have had bad feelings towards Emmett’s father that are unresolved at this point. But to me, that’s a sign of a great book.
Clare is sweet. I loved her character. She went out of her way to do things for those around her. But she needed out of England for a bit. And she didn’t tell Emmett that or even why she needed out when she probably should have. Neither Clare nor Emmett is perfect. And I love that as well.
I loved the way the author shows us Clare and Emmett’s love story as the book goes along. It flashes back at the end of each chapter. So we get to see how their love was kindled, as well as hopefully re-kindled. That was great!
And really, the earthquake parts were some of my absolute favorites. I also loved reading the historical note at the end letting the reader know that those parts were based on real life. The author did a fantastic job weaving the historical with the plot in this one.
Romance, clean; Period; series but standalone read. Mild Christian faith elements. This is by far the best book by Stacy Henry that I have read so far. She always has gorgeous covers and her writing is good, this is definitely the best of all of her novels that I have reviewed. Clare and Emmett are married and have been struggling to communicate, to mourn, to deal with Emmett's domineering father and the demands of his title and estate. His father and myriad other figures seem to be undermining their fragile relationship. Beautifully set partially in Italy, and partially in England, the setting and backstory combined with the tragic events made for a gorgeous, heartfelt, sad, but hopeful and romantic read. Their hopes their struggles, it all came together for me and for them as the story progressed. I loved the resolution and the final things that helped them solidify their relationship. Gorgeous heartfelt, satisfying read. I received a copy in exchange for a fair and honest review. This in no way influenced my review.
This one was a very good listen. Mom and both agree it is rare to find a book with a married couple. They usually prearranged or forced marriage and the couple falls in love well being "stuck" together. This one was a bit different. The couple had fallen in love and the picked to become married to each other. The problem that has forced are couple to become distant from each other is a miscarriage. Another topic that is not talked about a lot in romance; yet frequently happens in relief. Mom and I found it to be a great reason for a husband and wife to become distant. This plot was also treated, in our opinion, very maturely. Another plot Mom and I must talk about it the fact the hero felt he needed to please his father and it was causing to live under his fathers thumb, well never being able to live up to his expectations. Mom found that the way was resolved and talked about was again very mature, yet still got us a nice happy ending in the end. Over all another amazing boo from this author. We highly recommend this series and can not wait to read the next one.
A story featuring an already married couple, struggling with loss and doubts. I enjoyed the story, though I wished they had talked things through earlier. Though I supposed much of the way they interacted could be due to cultural differences, which were not often mentioned.
Heartwarming, emotional, and a great message of standing by your spouse.
This was well written and had well-developed characters and a storyline that is much cooler for having been based on real events. It was clean and had a happy ending. My complaints are that it felt a little slow at times and I thought it was a bit unrealistic that the orphaned child desperately mourned the loss of her brother but didn’t mention her parents at all.
Beneath an Italian Sky is part of the An American Heiress series. I enjoyed this historical. I found it tugging on my emotions at times. There was a tragedy that is just so heart breaking, I liked this story of forgiveness, letting go, and second chances. I give Beneath an Italian Sky four and a half stars. Many readers who enjoy clean, historical fiction will not want to miss this one. It is definitely worth a read. I received this book from the publisher, but was not required to write a review. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
BENEATH AN ITALIAN SKY is a story of a husband and wife who have lost themselves and their love amidst challenges and doubts, but still have hope in mending their relationship. It's set mostly in historical Italy before, during, and after the aftermath of a large earthquake, with flashbacks to their courtship and after their marriage in England. Readers will easily connect with these characters and have their hearts pulled on by this sweet story.
I really enjoyed these characters! Emmett was a little lacking in confidence and I wanted him to find his backbone, but I felt like his story had the most character development as he came to terms with his grief, his wife, and his father. Clare was fairly steady and consistent through the whole story. She was sweet and kind, but would do whatever she could to fight for her unborn child and for the sweet girl who came into her's and Emmett's lives. Emmett and Clare seemed to circle around each other and their doubts for much of the story, but eventually they came to an impasse where they needed to decide if they would open their hearts, be vulnerable, and trust each other. Their relationship and love was beautiful as was their trust in God. This is the first story I've read that involves an earthquake and I thought it was a somewhat intense and interesting aspect. There were some serious challenges and dangers and it forced the characters to come together. I also adored Antonina! She was a sweet addition to this story.
I had a few complaints... First off it began rubbing me wrong in how Clare places much of the blame for her marriage's issues on Emmett and on how he didn't grieve with her. I feel like everyone grieves differently, and though I understood her side, I also felt it was judgmental and selfish when she could have also opened up and talked to Emmett about why he felt or acted as he did instead of just distancing herself from him. Not that he was correct in not grieving with her, but that they both needed to try to understand each other instead of holding to their own preferences. I also felt the story was tied up too perfectly in the end. I actually would have preferred a specific person (a secondary character) to not so easily open up and flip positions. I felt like that could have been not resolved so easily, but maybe by the epilogue or with eventually the character coming around.
In the end, was it what I wished for? I enjoyed this story. The characters were delightful, with some good character development, a sweet romance, and a test of faith. Fans of the genre and the author will find much to enjoy here! I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Among Sand and Sunrise, to release this fall.
