One morning Silly Tilly Mole wakes up and smells jelly beans. She thinks sheforgot to remember Easter. She wants to ask the Easter Bunny in for a cup of tea, but where are her glasses and Easter bonnet? Tilly is so silly she forgets what she's looking for--and almost misses Easter!
The youngest of three children, Lillian Hoban was born in Philadelphia on May 18, 1925. She attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Art, studied dance for ten years (and danced with the Martha Graham dancers), taught Modern Dance and danced professionally in the 1950s. She learned to draw still life and began to write her own stories only after having children (Phoebe, Brom, Esme and Julia), and based her tales on their experiences.
Lillian Hoban's I-Can- Read-Books about Arthur the Chimpanzee, and the Frances books (written by her former husband Russell Hoban) continue to be extremely popular among children as time goes by- the hallmark of classics.
When I first wake up in the morning, it is definitely difficult for me to function before I’ve had my coffee. Tilly the Mole woke up and she knew today was a special day. In the excitement of trying to get her act together for the Easter Bunny, she has to find her Easter bonnet, make tea, and remember what she was trying to remember. Young readers will enjoy finding out if she can get it together in time to greet Mr. Bunny. Simple text and sweet, colorful illustrations make this book a good one to share with kids in the days leading up to Easter.
This early reader story will amuse young children as they read about Silly Tilly mole. She wakes up on Easter morning and goes about preparing for the Easter bunny to bring her an Easter basket. Her problem is that she can't find her glasses and mistakes things and then forgets what she is doing. Funny story and lovely illustrations.
Cute story about a forgetful mole who meets with the Easter bunny. One of my many favorites from childhood. Some amusing moments, though the illustrations aren't quite as vivid as I remembered. Still, I love the one with Tilly's Easter basket. A cute Easter-themed story for kids.
What? Silly Tilly forgot what he was looking for. Why? Silly Tilly is forgetful.
- Her glasses - What she is looking for - Where she is going - can't remember why she is making tea. and she forget who it is for.
silly tilly mole woke up one morning. she sniffed the wind. "i smell jelly beans,"she said. she sniffed the wind again.
"it must be easter, and i forgot to remember." tilly heard a thump on her front door. "it is the easter bunny,"she said
"he is bringing me my easter basket." i will ask him in for a cup of tea. first i will put on my easter boonnet." tilly reached for her glasses. she could not find them. "oh dear," she said.
"i forgot to remember where i put my glasses. don't go away, Mr. Bunny," she called. tilly looked under the bed. she could not see without her glasses, and she forgot to remember what she was looking for. "i will light a candle,"said silly tilly. "then i will see what i am looking for." tilly hurried downstairs to get a candle.but she could not see. she bumped into a chair.
"is that you, Mr. Bunny?" she asked the chair. "do sit down. i will make a cup of tea for you while i try to remember what i am looking for." tilly scurried to the stove to get the teapot. but she forgot where she was going. she went to the window and got a flowerpot instead. "here is my easter bonnet," she said. she put the flowerpot on her head. "thank goodness,"said silly tilly. "i have found my easter bonnet. now we can have our tea!" she hurried to the table to get the teacups.
"oh, dear,"said tilly, "i have hurried so much and scurried so much, i am in a tizzy. i can't remember why i am making tea. and i forget who it is for. i must sit down and think." just as tilly sat down, there was another loud thump on her front door. "my goodness!" she said. "what a very loud thump! i wonder who it could be?" tilly jumped up. as she did, her glasses slid right onto her nose. she could see! "oh, how nice!" she said "here are my glasses! now i remember what i was looking for. Mr. Bunny," she called, "are you still there?"
she hurried over to the chair. "oh, dear," she said. "he isn't here. he forgot to leave my easter basket, and he didn't remember his tea." THUMP! THUMP! WHACK! the front door flew open. "tilly mole," called Mr. Bunny, "i have brought your easter basket!" "i thought you forgot to remember," said tilly.
"i would not forget," said the easter bunny. "this is my job." the easter bunny hopped into the house. "what a nice easter bonnet," said Mr. Bunny. "what a nice easter basket," said tilly mole. she could see pink and purple jelly beans,
little candy easter eggs, a small chocolate bunny, and a tiny yellow chick. tilly and the easter bunny ate some jelly beans with their tea. and silly tilly mole said, "i am so glad you did not forget to remember it is easter!"
Silly Tilly is featured in three holiday-themed books by Lillian Hoban. We've read all three and they are all similar in Tilly's absentmindedness and nearsightedness. Tilly is a sweet little mole and she is very kind and thoughtful, if she remembers what she is doing. This is a fun story to read aloud with younger children and it is a good choice for the Easter holiday.
I grew up reading this book, and it never failed to make me laugh, especially the line "I forgot to remember." The text is already a wonderful story that will encourage children to think outside the box. The pictures only enhance this by adding colorful, well-drawn illustrations that really showcase the story. It also teaches children that sometimes there is a perfectly reasonable explanation as to why people sometimes do silly things.
How Tilly could possibly make it through Easter without her glasses is one prediction that students could make. The different events of Tilly trying to get tea for the Easter Bunny are great prediction practice for the students.
Silly Tilly the mole, apparently her glasses give her a better memory, cause once they are lost, she has no memory. And will the Easter Bunny, remember Silly Tilly's Easter basket?
