There was something really nice about this book. A lot of fantasy books lean in on unexpected twists to keep amping up the drama and tension. This one didn’t do that and that was a good thing. There was a bit of honesty to all the characters’ motivation that was refreshing. It was just a good fun pleasant read.

Relic of the Dawn is the second in White Wolf’s series of novels based on their hugely successful Exalted property. I read the first one Day as Dark as Night a little while ago, and frankly, didn’t enjoy it. The writing was sloppy, the main character annoyed/bored me, and in general, I just didn’t think it was particularly evocative. So why did I give Relic of the Dawn a shot?

Honestly, I have no idea. Maybe I just felt like I needed more Exalted in my life. Maybe my brain needed to read something mindless. Maybe the stars were right. Who knows? In any case, I read it, and it turned out to be better than the Day as Dark as Night, though it’s no Lord of the Rings either.

Relic of the Dawn chronicles the adventures of Dace, one of the recently reborn Solar Exalted, as he meets up with strangers from the distant past, gets caught up in a plot by soldiers of a deathlord to take over a city, and so on. At only 250 pages, it’s a pretty short, quick read, but it’s fun. Wilson manages to make Dace a fairly likeable character, in that big, gruff, warrior stereotype sort of way. To be fair to Wilson, Dace isn’t (as far as I know) his creation – Dace is one of the signature characters in the line. Which, honestly, makes it more impressive that Wilson can take him and breath some life into the character.

As I said, it’s a short, quick, fun read. People not familiar with Exalted on some basic level probably won’t enjoy it, but you never know. There’s enough explanation that a non-Exalted fan could read it and do ok. But it isn’t groundbreaking in any particular way, and it’s not likely to alter the face of fantasy literature as we know it. Still, I enjoyed it for the few days of amusement it provided me.
