Chamnan is a young boy from Thailand that is new to this country. Alison is a baker whose shop is just across from the Thai restaurant that Chamnan frequents with his family. Chamnan is intrigued but nervous about this new life and new language and will not speak to anyone in English. That is until Alison comes up with a plan to help Chamnan overcome his fears. This is a wonderful book for all ages which shows just what happens when we cross barriers, in this case, literally crossing the street, to get to know others and make them feel at home in a new place. This would be a great book for a teacher to read in the beginning of the year to show students how they can get to know one another, maybe with an activity like interviewing another student from another county. A truly heartwarming book!

Nice story how a shy little immigrant boy gets over his shyness with the help of the lady from the bakery, with a cute little story about how her bread sings when done cooking. We are all different from one another and should welcome our new people in our neighborhood.

Text Set Book #6
This is a great book and story that can be encouraging for young English language learners. It is a story about a boy who does not speak fluent English and must take a trip from his parent’s Thai restaurant to the bakery across the street.
Possible Assignment: Have students share their ideas about what it is like to be in an English Language Learner’s shoes. Kindergarteners can then experience how hard it can be by learning a set of songs in different languages. Possible Songs: Spanish: Los Pollitos Dicen, French: Frère Jacques Mandarin OR by watching familiar cartoons in foreign languages such as, The Three Little Pigs in Mandarin:

Students can then chart their experiences, being momentarily immersed in a new language, and further discuss and analyze the experience of the child in Bread Songs.

This book would be great for ELL/ESL teachers. It is very touching. I would probably use this as a first day of school read aloud.
