Homicide detective Rachel Harroway is Highlands' hero. All across the Appalachian Mountains, locals praised her name. She has captured more killers than any other detective in her lifetime, her methods are secret, and young ambitious journalists are dying to know her story. When a teenager's body turns up on display in Rachel's North Carolinian town, the gifted detective risks her legacy to track an imaginative killer with a twisted sense of art.
This was a non stop gore filled nightmare! I couldn't stop reading it if I wanted to! The villains are ghoulish, demented psychopaths who have turned murder into an art form. It was like a bad horror movie and I could not look away. The heroine was dead people, she called them orphans, and we helped them to the other side by finding justice for them. It also helped that she was a police officer and with the help of her sidekick/partner she was able to solve many, many cases. But then she comes face to face with an evil trip named the Three Kings and all hell, and I do mean hell, breaks loose. I just admit that some of the decisions she made annoyed me to no end. I got frustrated with her and her partner and just wanted them to get the bad guys already but I kept reading. It was quite a gore filled story with very evil men killing for fun, making disgusting snuff movies and resorting to unspeakable acts of violence. It was very very explicit and not for the faint of heart. I don't really like the ending but hopefully we will have a sequel or something to the it up for me. This is a new author for me and I was really leery of reading it but I am so glad I did. For those who like ID channel and serial killer mysteries of which I am guilty of both.
If there weren't so many jarring errors, it would have been a much easier read garnering more stars. The premise was promising and I am familiar with Highlands, GA so these two things lead me to read this book. Rachael is a detective with noteworthy case clearance. Her and her partner, Peak, are faced with a killer who leaves his victims on display. Rachael has an ability to see the victims ghosts and they help her in her pursuit of justice. The investigation becomes personal when her adopted daughter is kidnapped. From here things fall apart, her characters fall apart. All the training and experience you have read they possess are thrown aside, it's hard to believe any of their success as detectives.
Murder twenty-five years forgotten, a female detective with the ability to communicate with the dead, and a killer without boundaries clash in the heart of winter.
It's Christmas, and there's been another murder. Rachel Harroway, a homicide detective gifted in the arts and communication with the dead, tracks a serial killer lurking in the shadows for the last twenty-five years. The closer Rachel gets to solving the mystery, the more the unforgiving Appalachian winter weather and supernatural energies push back, forcing Rachel to decide how far she'll go for a man society has forsaken.
Rachel Harroway sees dead people. Homicide detective Rachel Harroway is Highlands' hero. All across the Appalachian Mountains, locals praised her name. She has captured more killers than any other detective in her lifetime, her methods are secret, and young ambitious journalists are dying to know her story. Imagine being an Officer or Detective and you are able to see the spirits of the dead who can tell you or show you how they died. Then comes the problem of getting the evidence so you can lock the killer or killers up. The real downside though is Madness. Madness is also a lingering spirit; or Orphan as they are called in our novel. If the Orphans, the lingering spirits, latch onto you and their deaths remain unresolved, they tend to hang around. Seems our heroine;Rachel Harroway; has this ability to see Orphans. Her mother had this ability and she had a breakdown, and was put into an asylum. To compound on the problem of seeing things, she is having difficulties surrounding her adoptive daughter who seems to have some of this ability also. Gripping and suspenseful from the start this novel had me gripped. The story is well written and the tension won't let you go once you start reading. Twists and turns and a fabulously written story. Loved the characters so well thought out and well written. Can't wait see what is in store next from this author. Hoping there might be a sequel but will have to wait and see. Highly recommend reading.

Imagine being a homicide cop and being able to speak to the orphaned spirits left behind due to their sudden, violent deaths.
Having verifiable evidence to justify the arrests and inquiries can be a bit problematic. So far, she has been granted a lot of leeway though. Given the lengths she and her partner go to resolve one case close to her and her own interests, she may have tougher times ahead.
As things stand, she faces exhausting and draining challenges.
Her adopted daughter has many of the same gifts. Dangerous to a child hungry for friends.
So far, our intrepid detective has faced off with some awful characters. Her retired pastor father is not really a believer in her skills, so might prove a threat to her custody of her daughter.
Madness is also a lingering specter. Her own mother seems to have shared her Gift, but broke under the pressure. If the Orphans, the lingering spirits, latch onto you and their deaths remain unresolved, they tend to hang around. Seems her mother had a breakdown, and was asylum contained.
A rough landscape all around, with her support system in jeopardy and in danger of attacks- she seems a magnet for the troubled.
Exciting edge of your seat action, I am looking forward to reading more.

They can see the dead. They call them orphans but in order for the orphans to cross over their killer must die or be arrested. Rachel is a police detective and her gift comes in handy. She adopted a girl who has the same gift to be a mentor. Rachel is about to be involved in her toughest, most personal challenging case yet.
This is an amazingly well written paranormal thriller that has you on the edge of you seat from beginning to end. The characters are extremely well done weather good or evil, they draw you into the story. The storyline itself is non stop action that is filled with suspense, dangerous situations, graphic scenes, unexpected twists and heroic actions. The book is compelling and keeps the reader on an emotional rollercoaster as Rachel deals with the chaotic drama around her. I read this book in one sitting, it was difficult to put down. It is so good. If you like psychological thrillers with some paranormal elements thrown in the you just have to read this book.
I loved this book which is more than a spooky tale of ghosts and suspense. This is in part a story about a women and a girl whom share the same gift of seeing the dead. This story is about a strong female detective who goes all out to solve several crimes in her community. I enjoyed this story about a strong women and her search for justice. I enjoyed that Rachel is not scared to ask and accept help from her partner Peak. I loved the twists and turns of this story and I could not stop reading until I knew the ending. This book was so entertaining that I lost track of time. I love it when a book lets me forget about everything else and keeps me absorbed in the story. I recommend that you read this book, it is so worth your time.

This was an okay book. Not great. Maybe not even good, but not bad either. It's about a detective who has a 'gift' of being able to see what she calls orphans. That's ghosts to almost anybody else. These ghosts push and pull and harass her here and there in order to bring their deaths some resolution. Some of the book just didn't make sense to me. Like why the bad guys were called the 3 kings and they used kings from suits of cards as their identifying signatures. Shouldn't there then be 4 kings? Or maybe their signatures should be gold, frankincense and myrhh. Maybe i'm being too picky. Or, if the orphans can beat up on people as it does to the hero, why can't they intervene against the bad guys? I know in books you have to suspend disbelief now and then, but there are limits. This book took me beyond mine.
This review covers both The Orphans and Silent Ones.
I really enjoyed the very beginning of this series. These last two novels were less interesting and definitely seemed more disjointed.
There was a good deal of violence that seemed to intensify with more and more graphic detail with each book. There was also an almost rushed feeling to tell the story. Gone is the richness of the storytelling and suspense. At times, it felt like Donovan was trying too hard.
By the time I got to Silent Ones, there were so many questions that were left unanswered and loose ends that had me wondering why they were even included.
Overall, I like the premise of the stories, but by the end, like Rachel, I was tired.
This is a great story about a detective named Rachel and her partner Peak. Someone is committing horrible murders in the most gruesome ways. Rachel uses her ability to communicate with the dead to try to solve the murders. Before they can solve the crimes and capture the killer many will die and even family will be in danger. This is a great story I highly recommend to anyone that like a good suspense thriller. Can't wait for more.

I liked this book and the ideas behind it. I do have a couple of critic though. Several times the protagonist says that she knew her daughter was old enough to be left alone and take care of herself. And once she left her home alone at night and again all day. Her daughter is 8. No 8 year old should be left alone all day or night. And no reasonable parent would think it was ok to do so. The second issue I took with this book is the ending. *spoiler* her partner is very important to these stories. Losing peak as undramatically as in this book detracted from it.
Murder, torture, restless spirits wanting justice and a detective with a special gift. IS it really a gift or is it a burden?? Rachel has brought in more killers than anyone can think of. How does she manage this.. A secret that her partner knows about but sometimes has a hard time understanding. She walks with the dead and they lead her to answers. Not a pleasant way to live, and this time MOST of her dead are children that have all been tortured by the same deranged person in a very sadistic way.
I received this book as a Prime First Read. As I started the book, I was not sure I was going to finish. I am not a big fan of paranormal stories, and I thought to myself this book was going to be another formula ghost story. Boy, was I wrong. This book is more of a police procedural with a twist, and about relationships. By the books end, I cared about the characters, and I wanted the story to continue.
Characters were likable and the villains were horribly unique to the media culture today. Unique crime novel. Really liked the fact that the writer had a well roared vocabulary to convey the full story without resorting to vulgar and shock value dialogue. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a simple fun read without all the common usage of profane and vulgarity.
A really good story. However, it seriously needed to be edited.
I really enjoyed this book, however there were so many mis-spellings and poor use of grammar, that it created a distraction. I was constantly wondering if it had been proofed before it was published. Also like I see often, the ending seemed rushed to tie it up and just be done. Overall though, if one overlook these small issues, I do recommend.
I have enjoyed this series so far, I like the characters and plot, however, the grammar and spelling in the last two books needs some serious editing. Toward the end of this book the main character’s name changed from Rachel to Haley for a chapter. Someone at the publishing company needs to read these books before they are published and correct the errors. I would have given five stars if I didn’t have to muddle through all of the errors.
Rachel sees the dead and they want her help in finding justice. Peak is Rachael's partner and although he can't see ghosts, he sees what they do to his partner and is determined to help. When the killer turns out to be a trio ofkillers trying out do each other, it will take everything to nit become their next victim!
A thrilling paranormal story. Time has moved on since the first book The Haunting of Rachel Harroway. Time has been harsh to Rachel but she is using her powers to solve murderers. She and her partner Peak have a great success rate, but it takes a toll on them. This story has some unusual twists that will keep you turning the pages to see how it ends.
I love the way this author writes. Her character and world building is simply the best. I have nothing more to say, but I cannot submit review until I write the correct amount of words or letters? I wish that this could be changed.
I just loved this book. There was just enough scare me to pieces. There was a plot with this and characters I loved and ones I wanted to shoot or something!!!! But I'm thinking that was probably was the effect it was supposed to have on the reader!! Thank you!
Detective Rachel Halloway's ability or gift to communicate with certain dead people leads her and her partner on a search across several states to find out who the Kings are and why they are killing so many people.
Enjoyed the story, a bit of background about the orphans and how she came to know the "rules" of working might have been interesting. Looking.forward to some romance between the two cops in following reads.
Intense, kind of silence of the lambs murders with some kill films thrown in. RACHEL CAN SEE DEAD PEOPKE CALLED Orphans and she helps get the killers to allow the orphans to go home. Her daughter is kidnapped and she finds the killers - the man in the bunny mask.
This story had a creative premise and some good twists. I had a hard time putting it down. However, there were some minor issues with plot/actions as well has editing faults. That being said, I will be reading more from this author.
The subject of the book was intriguing. Unfortunately, the step of proofreading had been skipped, prior to publishing. Therefore, the flow of the story was interrupted by the constant missing to added words in the sentences.
This is a very interesting and captivating mystery. I enjoyed the story and was glad for the relatively clean read. I did enjoy the characters and found the story intriguing.

I reserve 5 stars for classics, but this one was cool! Kinda scary, tense, weird, and psychotic mixed with heartfelt devotion and hope. Give it a whirl. Nice weekend read for sure
I love this book the fact that she can see dead people, would scare the heck out of me, but for Rachel she seems to be able to handle it. For those who live a good mystery pleas read this book. I hope you write more about Rachel and Mallory.
Great series. Highly recommended. Scary but so good. I believe people who have the 6th sense. I wouldn't want that burden. Can't wait to read the next book. Hoping Rachel will found love too.
