The Girl Geek Academy is an Australian-based online movement aimed at teaching one million women to learn technology by 2025. They run programs for girls, parents, teachers, corporate and community and this is the first in a series of books aimed at 8-12 year old girls that puts technology centre stage.
On a similar level to things like The Baby Sitter's Club these girls deal with the dramas of school and friendship while learning to hack, code, game, design and more!
Hamsa is worried when her teacher anounces they will be doing a Hackathon. A hack-a-what?! thinks Hamsa. She doesn't understand anything about coding. And then there's the fact she has to work in a different group from her friends!

Just like Hamsa I did get a little lost in the I.T. jargon at first but things are quickly explained and as Hamsa and her new friends progress the tech talk definitely becomes much less intimidating. Perfect for mid to late primary students who are starting to learn technology, this series will certainly take the intimidation factor out of trying something new and will also take the fear out embracing your inner geek.

Great book for 9+ kids who are in to computers and being a little different. It is about 4 kids put together to work on a project and how this affects their relationships with one another and their other friend groups. It is about learning to work together and learning to code together. That not everyone needs to know all parts because as a team you can cover all areas.

I loved this book. For someone who is starting out in programming, and who is also a mother of a 12 year old daughter, I found I couldn’t put it down. I’ve meet the lovely ladies at Pax and GCAP a few times and was really excited to see they had books. I’m encouraging my daughter and her friends to read it as well.

It was good, and I liked hearing about their coding projects.
I would have preferred this book when I was a bit younger though.
