Hardcover book detailing the semi-track vehicles conceived shortly after the turn of the century in an effort to prevent the sinking of tractor wheels in soft ground. Most half-track vehicles were developed and produced for military and similar special purposes. The advent of low-pressure large pneumatic tires gradually ruled out the need for the semi-track, but these vehicles are still un use in many parts of the world.
This was among the odder of the books bequeathed by my father, reflecting his interest in minor military vehicles. It is basically a photo book of the variety of half-track vehicles made through WWII (after which the development of high-floatation tires and more sophisticated full tracks made the half-track principle obsolete). Most of the examples are military, of course, but a few are agricultural or other. The book was written to early to include the efflorescence of the half-track principle in modern snowmobiles.
