Dark Horse is thrilled to announce tales from two diverse worlds in our FCBD Gold Offering featuring Netflix's Stranger Things and a spooky trip into Jeff Lemire and Dean Ormston's Eisner Award-winning series Black Hammer with a cover by Chun Lo. In Stranger Things, writer Jody Houser and artist Ibrahim Moustafa bring the adventuring party back together after Eleven's disappearance, as Nancy and Steve find a way to lift the spirits of a despondent Mike. Perhaps all it takes is a roll of the dice. Then, in the world of the Eisner Award-winning Black Hammer series creator Jeff Lemire, guest writer Ray Fawkes, and artist David Rubín, take the reader on an EC-style tour through Madame Dragonfly's mysterious Cabin of Horrors to witness two groups of brand-new Black Hammer heroes from the past! This was a pretty quick story. The thing that makes this show is the characters, and I love seeing a little more with them. The relationship between Mike and Nancy has been one thing that I don't think gets as much attention on the show, so to see a story, even a short one, about the two of them trying to find a way back to normal after the events of season one was really nice. Also, the artwork was gorgeous.
In this issue we get a small, touching scene between Nancy and Steve, as Nancy is concerned her little brother Mike is not coping well after their monstrous adventures. They try to draw him out by encouraging him to return to his involvement with his role playing games. There is an additional Black Hammer story afterwards, which introduced me to Madame Dragonfly.
Gostei bastante desta bd. É difícil encontrar bd de que goste, não e dos meus géneros favoritos mas está e das melhores. Um desenho extraordinário, uma história bem consolidada e de fácil compreensão mesmo para aqueles que não leram volumes anteriores ou que não conhecem a história.
The Stranger Things portion of this comic wasn’t very substantial. Taking place just after the events of season 1, Nancy helps Mike cope with Eleven’s disappearance by getting him to play D&D again. That’s pretty much it. Not the biggest fan of the art in this one and there wasn’t much of a story here, or a hint of one to come. Overall meh.
Black Hammer was much more interesting. Sort of Elvira meets Tales from the Crypt, the art was kooky and the story intriguing. I wish there was more of this one in this comic, but it’s enough to get me to seek it out. So there’s that.
Both of these two short stories were fun. I downloaded the comic for Stranger Things, and then stayed around to read the second part of the comic as well. The stranger things part was a small filler story after season 1 with Nancy, Steve and Mike. Me absolutely loving those three characters helped me love this story. The second part, Black Hammer something? Was also a nice story to read.
That's it, no complaints, they were very nice to read. Not the most extraordinary stories but they did what they were supposed to great.
It was an interesting read...the past few years I hadn't been reading my free comics, I just let them collect dust. However, I decided to read this for fun. It was ok, the stories after this one that are included sucked, but this one wasnt bad.
We see a conversation between Steve Harrington and Nancy regarding Mike. Mike is feeling down after their adventure and cannot continue his life normally. Nancy, with the help of Steve, helps Mike by talking about his role-play games. There is nothing much going on at all. The art style was good and interesting. Other than that, I can't give this more than two stars. There are also few pages dedicated to Black Hammer something that I didn't know before. Get it because it's free but don't expect much.
A short little scene. It's nice and innocent on it's own.
However, given the context of when I read this was after I had watched the first three eps of season three, it makes those eps even more sad and annoying.
Fell like I would have gotten more out of this if I had seen the show but that said one doesn't just not read a comic book when it's free! Really liked the Black Hammer stuff though.
One of the new issues I got for Free Comic Book day. A sneak preview of the new Stranger Things series they're launching which tells about events in between the show's seasons. I'm so desperate for anything Stranger Things that I might even read the series.
2 short stories, i enjoyed them both. The first story was actually about stranger things and the second one had a funny, twisted plot, nothing really special imo
Free comic book day is awesome. Who doesn't love getting free stuff? Especially comics since they have become a larger and larger investment. You want to try new stuff without having to cut into your comic budget, so this is one way to do that.
I have never seen Stranger Things despite having friends say I would really enjoy it. But I don't stream of whatever needs to be done to see it. So I try to find out about it in other ways. This way wasn't great because it assumes the reader is already familiar with the material.
I also have never seen the backup story. While it also assumes some knowledge about the material being known by the reader, I still felt it was easier to get into it.
Of course, both stories are short previews so it is hard to really judge a series by them. But I would say the Stranger Things should appeal to fans of the show. The other story lookalike it would appeal to comic book fans especially horror comics.
In this free comic book day comic from Black Horse, we are treated to two stories from two very famous franchises. Firstly we get a glimpse into the world of stranger things, set somewhere after Mike has been rescued at the end of Season 1 of the hit Netflix show. The second story comes from the Eisner Award-winning series Black Hammer. Both are wonderfully drawn and the stranger things story certain leaves the reader wanting more. I think I may well be investing in those graphical novels!
I've only watched the first few episodes of season 1, so I'm a bit uninformed on the context of the stranger things story. Even so, it's fairly easy to grasp what's going on. It's ok. Not a fan of the artwork though - the people's heads - woah.
The Black Hammer comic was actually quite interesting - very very different - where different is good.
I loved the Stranger Things story in this book. It was a sweet little exchange between Nancy and Mike (Steve too!) However, I was not interested in the Black Hammer part of this comic so my star rating only has to do with Stranger Things.
The Stranger Things story is complete but pretty boring both in content and art. The colour palette is flat and boring. The second story (Black Hammer) was better but still not enough to grab my attention.
When other people are busy discussing Stranger Things season 3, I read this. Contains a touching short scene between Nancy and Mike. Then, in the Black Hammer section, I like the interactive part.
This feels like an intermission between the two seasons of the series, maybe? I don't really know because I haven't watched but really interested in them
Waaaay too short but it’s free. Great graphics and tantalising entree for Stranger Things and at least fir me an introduction to Black Hammer and the Unteens
