Goodreads Book give-away winner!

The Pace by Shelena Shorts is a great read that’s full of suspense and constant action. The book does a great job of keeping the reader engaged because just when you think you’ve figured out the details, the novel turns and brings to light a whole new angle to the story, which keeps you captivated the whole way through.

I enjoyed this novel for several reasons. One, the two main characters, Sophie and Wes, are well developed and extremely likeable. As a reader, I was drawn into their lives immediately, and came to care for what happens to them from the onset and throughout the story. Second, I liked the narrative and Point of View (POV) of the story, which was in Sophie’s perspective. She is considerate, smart, sincere, yet emotionally vulnerable. Third, I like how the back-story revealed itself slowly throughout the novel as the details became important in the storyline. Overall, Shelena Shorts pulled together an intriguing plot and wrapped it around carefully created characters, a well chosen setting and angled it in a perspective that keeps the reader drawn to the events from beginning to end.

Sophie, age 18, is in her senior year in High School. She’s chosen to complete her final year through an online program, as her and her mom have moved around the states several times, which has made it difficult for Sophie to acclimate to the school setting. Sophie and her mom meet every Thursday for lunch at Berkeley University, where her mom works as a medical technician.

One fateful day as Sophie is leaving the school, she crashes her car into a guy named Wes who is a 19 year old student at the university. Wes is not your normal guy. His past is filled with mysterious events that Sophie can’t quite seem to figure out, but his gentle and caring ways has her falling head over heels for him none-the-less. As they develop a love for one another, they realize that fate has played a hand in bringing them together, and it’s not their first encounter. They struggle to understand how they can come to grips with that past and the events that have changed Wes’ life forever.

I enjoyed the book and the ending left me craving for more. I look forward to Shelena Shorts’ sequel to The Pace, The Broken Lake, as I can’t wait to see how Wes and Sophie’s journey continues.

The Original Review - Here!

In a time where so many stories carry the “mortal and immortal” element, The Pace distinguishes itself by knotting two topics that have been debated and constantly separated: science and X spiritual themes. Who said both couldn’t get along? Certainly not Shorts, who has gotten them together in order to create a novel that involve elements like: suspense, mystery and romance. The story’s narrated by Sophie after moving to California with her mother. There she meets Weston and thanks to this her life and “existence” take a new meaning. Sophie’s character is molded in a delightful way since there is a truthful balance in her personality. Unlike other “heroines” we are finding in this subdivision, she is decided, says what she thinks, not afraid to ask for explanations or giving ultimatums, but most surprisingly, she knows when to stop feeling sorry and move on. On the other side, we have Weston, a handsome boy, intelligent, adorable and does not keep a single secret, but several. As a vivid reader, I could appreciate that a pattern I have been observing in this category is broken and the author creates something new, interesting and captivating. For instance, the couple gets to know themselves in a peculiar situation, not on scholastic environment since each attend different academic grades; Sophie studies with an online program and Weston goes to college (not Biology class … Yes!). Readers will have the opportunity to see the relationship blossom, and by this I mean Shorts does not exclude the couple’s dating process and does not limit it to the main character’s room (Thank You!). The complexity of Weston’s emotions towards Sophie is much emotionally deep, tender and loving than just attempting to: eat her, sacrifice her or kill her. This is the character’s charm and bright. These factors, instead of making the story less interesting, can be outstanding and involve readers in its mystery that will be unveiled further on. In order to know who Weston is, how can he be an “immortal” and what role Sophie plays in this complex situation, make sure you read The Pace, a novel where science, love, destiny and time pace are tied in a magnificent way.

What a wonderful book!
The beginning of The Pace sets a nicely paced setting of the world we are about to enter, which truly becomes a page turner after the first chapter. Honestly, I carried this book around the house with me - I didn't want to stop reading it even for a second! I became so absorbed in the world Shelena created. The story of Sophie and Wes unravels in a well written collage of secrets, tender moments, journals and memories -allowing the attraction and developing relationship between Sophie and Wes to mean so much more than they ever dreamed of.
Without giving away the plot and to steer away from spoilers, I must say that Wes is an absolute original (and man do I wish he were real!)
The development of who Wes is and what role Sophie plays in his life is well thought out and beautifully written without overwhelming the reader.
Absolutely looking forward to The Broken Lake!

Hmmmmm, well I didn't know what to expect, but I didn't like it. At one point I wanted to stop reading but I decided to keep going since the book wasn't that long. It wasn't worth it.

I just didn't think it was very interesting. The first 4/5 of the book is them pining after each other. I didn't get it. Really, nothing happened. I might as well have been reading her diary about Sam this, Edward that... whoops! I meant Wes. Wes!

Speaking of Wes, I couldn't help compare him to Sam from Shiver. He was kind of weak and boring. I know that once or twice we get told kind of that he's strong but I think I was lied to. He was just not what I look for in rich and handsome men.

There was no way I could read this without thinking about Twilight. I couldn't help it. When she described his cold and impenetrable skin I just couldn't stop picturing that brooding sparkly vamp. Plus, he drove a nice car, was filthy rich, kind of antisocial, and had a funky shaped house (that I still don't understand why he had it. Little cozy log cabin too tiny for you??)

Sigh... and Sophie, I don't know what to do with her. I didn't think that she suffered from low self-esteem but I wanted to shake her and remind her that her life should not revolve around a dude. (Remind you of another character, too, huh?). I liked that she got mad, but it doesn't work if you're going to pine right after that.

So, like I said, nothing happens. They hang out, they talk, they make out, they talk, they go to the overlook, they talk. I predicted nearly everything that happened. I hope I am wrong about what will happen next. Did anyone know the point of the party scene? The only action in the book happens right near the end where you get hit with a cliffhanger and the title to the sequel. Just great.

Aside from all those complaints, it was a fairly clean book. I liked her mom. I liked that Sophie was willing to accept responsibility for her actions and take the steps necessary to correct her wrongs. I also liked reading her struggle with what to do after the pier scene. I also loved that Wes was a really good guy and was willing to make tough decisions (to his detriment) for the benefit of others.

I still think you should read it and form your own opinions. Even though I didn't like it, I could see this will be a book that many others will enjoy. obviously, we don't all use the same criteria to judge books (t'would be a sad, sad, world).

Wow! Was. Für. Ein. Mann!

Living in Canada, this book as not been released here and Shelena-the sweetheart that she is- kindly sent me a copy of this Amazing novel!
Thank-you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your story!!!

THE PACE is a gorgeously written story about a couple who's lives intertwined through out time.
Not only is this story about immortality, it's about reincarnation and how true love can never die!

I can't say I've read to many books about immorality but I never expected this mind boggling plot! I was beyond shocked by the brilliance of this concept!

It starts off as we met Sophie, your typical soon to be 18 year old. Sophie is a wonderful character and while some might think that walking her life in the first few chapters was nothing special, I grasped on quickly that she was meant to be written to show some key points to her personality. She is very independent, goodhearted and a caring person who stand up for what she wants and believes in. And later we find out why...
As the story goes on, one fateful day, she crashes into a car in the parking lot on campus and when she gets out to see the damage and beg forgiveness to the guy she hit, it was plain on his face that he never dreamed he would see her again...only she has no idea who he is.

Enter Weston! Ahhh Weston! Wes! He is a dreamy gorgeous creature that had my heart from minute one!
He has a very a mysterious way about him that was subtle and yet very defined at the same time and all I knew at that point is that it had seemed to have everything to do with Sophie.
I just loved his old soul way of speaking and the way he handled Sophie with such gentleness and warmth that made chivalrous...delicious!

The story unfolds in a smooth way that has you turning the pages as fast as you can to make smooth become now! So I read this in one sitting. Could.not.put.it.down! The intriguing plot line had me memorized as I tried to connect the dots and figure out what the twist could be. And let me tell ya, what a twist!!

The greatest part and what I love most about this story, was the fact that this was and foremost, is a love story. It didn't have nor need other characters to fill the void. Wes and Sophie carried the novel from minute one! There love story is so very unique. There romance can only be described as endearing and timeless!

This was such an amazingly wonderful book. It put a goofy smile on my face just at the thought of that kind of love!
A Glorious and Excellent read!!
I didn't want it to end! It only made me want to drop down on my knees and beg for more!
Can't wait to read more of Wes and Sophie's incredible story!

Congrats Shelena on a fantastic debut! It was wonderful girl!!!

This review is also posted on my blog, In The Good Books.

Weston is a one-of-a-kind immortal, thanks to an experimental blood transfusion. Sophie is an anti-social online student. The unlikely pairs' worlds will collide - literally - when she crashes her car into his.

After she finds out about his nature, she thinks things can't get any weirder, but that's until she realises that she belongs in his world.

The Pace never really hit the spot, for me. I've read rave reviews for this semi-obscure book, and so, had high hopes.

The premise - or at least Weston's situation - was unique, I admit, but sadly, that's where my praises stop.

I didn't like the writing style. I was being told everything that Sophie was doing, all the time, where half of it didn't feel relevant. She woke up, had breakfast, did some homework - sure, but none of that was vital to the story. Also, the dialogue between characters felt unnatural. In speech, it felt like the author was avoiding contractions. Do not, she is, etc.

The story was slow in building to the complication, which tacked on the end felt like an afterthought to the story. The ending was abrupt - I found myself flicking for a conclusion.

I couldn't identify with Sophie. She didn't feel like a teenager, but more middle-aged. Some of the secondary characters had more stand-out personalities, but I didn't really feel for any of them.

I give this series 2 out of 5 and maintain that just because this review is less-than-favorable does not mean that you won't enjoy it either. If you liked Twilight, you might like this series.

Loved it!!! This story is a beautiful blend of mystery, suspense and romance.

It didn't take me long to get caught up in this book. Sophie was all the things you look for in a main character strong, loyal and down to earth and Wes he was of course gorgeous and mysterious. Their romance was the main focus of the book and it is an incredible love story, a love that seems doomed. The paranormal aspect of the story is interesting and has a unique take on immortality. The ending of course left me craving for more.

I'm so glad there is a second book as I feel like Sophie and Wes' story is just getting starting. I can't wait for Broken Lake!

Oh my gosh! What was that? How cruel to leave me reeling like that! The ending- oh the ending. It was so heart stopping, near heartbreaking. I need the sequel now! I’m so glad I read The Pace now, instead of when it first came out. That would be pure agony to have to wait for The Broken Lake to come out! I only have to wait a few days now. Still, I need the sequel now!

Oh, what a book. What a purely brilliant, breathtaking book. It was beautiful, passionate, romantic, intriguing. I couldn't stop smiling as I read it. I loved the interaction between Sophie and Wes. It was so heart fluttering warm and lovely. The plot was thought out to perfection. It was intense and perfect. Sophie and Wes’ story was beautiful. Their love was so unique. It wasn’t one of those repeated novel loves where girl see’s boy, feels deep, immediate attraction and need, and the guy is so drop dead gorgeous the girl feels so plain and inadequate when really she’s not and is so very beautiful, and the guy has to explain over and over how absolutely perfect she is. Sophie and Wes’ love wasn’t like this. Their love was so normal. Which is why I loved it so much. It was an everyday first love, and that made it real, and so very possible. Like it could really happen to anyone- because it actually does. It happens every day. That is part of what drew me so deeply into the story, because it is real and possible. Their love was so normal, it was unordinary, because you don’t often see that type of relationships in books.

The writing was amazing. Shelena explained things so well, gave the reader the right information using the perfect choice of words. Sophie’s voice pulled me completely into her crazy story. She was such a strong, concrete character. Not weak, or dependent, or needy. She took care of herself. She didn’t let the breaking off of her one true love bring her down into deep depression. Here is a heroine that girls can actually relate to. She is so normal, (even though she really isn’t ;) and going through every day normal stuff. Having a boyfriend, falling in love, getting hurt, going on with her life. Her thoughts and reasoning’s made sense. And then there’s Wes. Oh Wes. So perfect, and yet not perfect. And so in love with Sophie. It’s so tangent. I found that as I read what he was doing to Sophie (when he decided he couldn’t be with her), I pictured in my head what he must be feeling and thinking. He must have been feeling acute pain and loss and hating that he was hurting Sophie, and his heart must have been breaking, matching the breaking of Sophie’s own heart. Their love was so romantic and dreamy. The kissing scenes, mmm, even I melted when I read them, not just the characters. lol

The plot of this story was incredible. It was so intriguing. The mechanics of what happened to Wes, what was happening to Sophie (over and over). As I got closer to the end, things started to click. Like the professor at the beginning who thought he recognized Sophie. Ding! Realization! So crazy, so cool. And then the end, when some old forgotten person from Sophie’s past came up. Creepy! My adrenaline was rushing when he stepped in. And then the ending! ARghh!!

This book was brilliant. I was astounded with the perfectness, yet the simplicity of it. This book definitely made my top favorite books ever list. I can’t stop thinking about it! I need to read the Broken Lake!

Liebes The Pace,
Lass mich dich zitieren: „We started walking, and he told me he was hungry, so he wanted to grab something to eat.“ (S. 54) oder “[…] so I picked the horse racing game. I loved that game, too. It was an exciting game, but it still only required a bit of luck.” (S. 56)

If you're decided to read The Pace just make sure to turn off your phone and to close yourself in your room before you do, because you won't want anyone disturbing you after you've begun it. You won't be able to put it down.

I really liked Sohie's character, I felt close to her by certain aspects of her personnality, the distance she keeps with others (she attended an online high school rather than going in class among her peers). She was a really likeable girl and I particularly enjoy her relation with her mom (besides the mystery part and the love story anyway).
What about Weston? Ah...Weston. Secretive and sexy he was the perfect (or close to) prince charming.
Both Sophie and Weston were enjoyable and well developped, and their relationship nicely realistic.

I apreciated that, even if their relationship was a major part of the plot (yes, it's a love story but not only), the mystery surrounding Weston and Sophie's discovery about her own life were also developped and gradually revealed. The "how" and the "why" were not ignored since we got looks into Weston's past.

To conclude, The Pace holds everything that - to my eyes - make a good story: mystery and romance with a unique and paranormal twist. Shelena made a wonderful job in intertwining paranormal and scientific elements together.

Her debut novel went beyond my expectations and I'll surely read it again while waiting for the sequel, The Broken Lake. It will be released on August 19th

4.5 Stars!

Well that was a surprising lovely and wonderful book! She created such wonderful characters that you just have to love and adore.

Sophie is a independent, strong, determined 18 year old girl that meets Immortal Wes. (Well she doesn't know that when she meets him... ) Wes is the usual male protagonist: handsome, wealthy, sweet, smart and lovely and ... *does a little squee* he drives an black Maserati *died*. I really liked Wes right from he beginning, he wasn't creepy, he was just lovely but oh so lonely and my heart aches for him!

What I liked most that Sophie didn't take his lies and she didn't just pretend everything is fine, that he cannot be evil. No - Our Girl discovered his lies and then took some days avoiding him to think about it and get clear about how to go on from there since she obviously hates being lied at.

She confronts him and forces him to tell her!

I also liked very much her idea about Immortal Wes ( no worries I won't spoil it) and I think it is a very smart idea and definitely something new. Love creative new ideas and hers has exactly that!

The only thing I didn't like that in between Wes does something extremely stupid and it just seemed forced to develop the story. It came out of the blue...

Can't wait to read the next one! Great Book, creative ideas and wonderful characters!

Momentum is spannend, mysterieus, intrigerend, …

The Pace by Shelena Shorts is a YA book, written through the first person perspective of Sophie. Sophie is an 18 year old homeschooled girl who falls in love rather quickly with a 19 year old named Weston. Weston has everything a girl could ask for, he's nice, smart, rich, and easy on the eyes. However, Weston has a secret.

WHAT?!!? HOLY BAJEEZELS!! After I finished reading THE PACE my jaw honestly hit the floor. It's still there actually. I haven't been able to speak for days. I must have the sequel. NOW. This definitely wins my personal award for "best cliffhanger." Seriously, I got to the last page and started yelling at the book and begging it to continue so I could find out what happens next. To my dismay, it not listen and I looked very silly. Wow. I'll try, but I don't even know how to review this without giving crucial plot twists away. Yes, I said twists, plural, because just when you think it's safe...BAM! You get hit with another one. THE PACE has a fantastic, intriguing and original concept that blends paranormal elements with science. It is also a sweeping romance that will leave your heart pounding and a brilliant mystery that will leave you guessing until the very end. Oh, it all starts out innocent enough, but then POW...SMACK!! You get knocked out. I totally can't wait to get back in the ring and face another round with this series.

Sophie and her mother move around a lot but they have finally settled themselves for a while in California. Rather than becoming "the new girl" at yet another school, Sophie has been allowed to take her classes online with the condition that she meet with her mother regularly on the Berkeley campus where she works. Her mother hopes this will give her the opportunity to meet some people close to her own age, but Sophie really has no desire to make any new friends. She doesn't mind being be herself, especially since she always seems to be leaving friends behind. She still occasionally talks to her friend Kerry who is back in Virginia, so for now, she's fine. At least until one day when she literally runs into the guy of her dreams. Sophie backs into Weston's car while leaving campus and her life is forever changed. Wes is unbelievably gorgeous, incredibly rich, completely fascinating and very mysterious. She's never met anyone like him yet she feels like she's known him forever. Their connection is instant and intense and he somehow becomes all that she can think about. As much as she loves Wes, she can't help but feel like there is something off about him. He's told her about his past but some things don't quite make sense, so Sophie decides to do a little detective work. There is no way to prepare for what she is about to discover.

There truly is nobody else like Wes. He is part science experiment, part miracle. His story is one of both tragedy and triumph that involves a century of secrets. Who or what is Wes and how does Sophie fit into everything? Is she ready to get involved in the mystery and risk her own safety to be with the one she loves? Only time will tell, and time is something Wes has plenty of, but for Sophie it may be running short.

First Thoughts:

What do I say about this book? It was beyond anything I had imagined. I have been wanting to read this book for some time now but kept putting it off because of all the other books pushed my way but finally due to a mishap of not getting "Lemniscate" on time I decided to finally read this and boy am I glad I did! I Loved Weston and Sophie, their relationship is beyond anything I could ever hope for in my life but it sure is good to read about it in books....

Summary:

Alright it's going to be short because there's a lot of mystery in this book and I think it's better if you discover it on your own but I'll give you a brief summary.

Sophie has moved a lot in her life, her mom drifting them from one town to another till they finally settle in California. Sophie is estatic because she found an online school where it invovles no face to face interaction with teachers or students. But her mother fears of her being without friends so she makes a deal with Sophie that she has to meet her every thursday on campus of a university for Lunch and she can take the online school, of course our dear Sophie agrees.

But one of the times she is leaving from one of their lunches she gets a call from her friend from the last place she came from and it startles her causing her to back into a very sleek black maserati, she instantly freaks but then comes face to face with a very handsome guy who happens to look around her age. She immediately panics at see the damage to his car she tries offering the guy her information but he says he has it covered and smiles at her. she can do nothing but stare dumbstruck. He then leaves and as does she. She arrives home and tells her mother who then calls the accident into the insurance agency where they come out and determine that it would cost 500 dollars to fix. So Wes, which was the guy's car she ran into insists he pay for the damage but he refuses...but he somehow gets her car fixed without her knowing and soon she finds herself in a world of udder confusion. They soon grow close and one thing leads to the next until Wes reveals not only something unusual about himself but about Sophie.

Last Thoughts:

I really am glad I finally got around to reading this book and have already bought the "Broken Lake" on my kindle. Weston and Sophie definately already have me wrapped around their fingers. I fell in love with them instantly not only for their great character development but for their total mysteriousness. I definately give this book 5 stars!!

Review
In The Pace, debut author Shelena Shorts manages to take a common premise among YA literature and twist it into something much more satisfyingly original and unique.

I really liked Sophie's character as she was inquisitive, independent, and cautious when need be. Wes was so original and I absolutely loved him! He was the perfect romantic interest for this book. Both characters and their relationship were beautifully developed and so very realistic.

The story line of The Pace is utterly mesmerizing. This was one of those books I did not and could not put down. Everything in this book was so wonderfully paced, especially the background information. It was revealed gradually throughout the entire story so it not only kept the mystery alive but it also didn't overwhelm the rest of the story. Honestly I can't recall a single dull moment in this book and I was left thinking about it long after I had finished it.

Another thing I loved about this book was how the story was really more on the side of science fiction than paranormal and this provided for a very refreshing and much needed change of....well you know....pace. The writing was impressive and extremely well crafted. It never ceased to astound me how wonderfully Shorts managed to intertwine spiritual and scientific elements together along with romance, mystery and suspense.

As for the ending,(This is where I lose all professionalism and get fan girly.), it was like such a total cliffhanger and I was like, "Frikin' awesometastic ending!" and, "Oh. My. Gosh!" The ending alone is enough to have me ready to kill for The Broken Lake so if you get a copy before me, sleep with one eye open. *laughs maniacally before collecting self to continue more professionally*

All in all, The Pace was a magnificent, unforgettable, and riveting story I would recommend to every teen and young adult out there. Seriously, if you haven't already read this terrific book RUN and get it be it from a friend, library, bookstore, or a total stranger on a park bench. And don't forget what I said about The Broken Lake, I'm watching you. *points back and forth between eyes and computer screen* (Hmmm, maybe I spoke to soon about getting back to professionalism cause it just flew back out the window. :P)

More + english review

This wasn't exactly what I was expecting when I started reading it. So here's the negative first...

At first I thought "Oh great, another Twilight knock off." I am seriously getting tired of reading books that describe boys as beautiful. Yet again the guy in this book is too perfect and of course, rich and immortal. And just like Edward was afraid of hurting Bella, there is even a reason that Sophie and Wes cannot consummate their relationship. As I continued to read I started to realize there were some similarities to another Twilight knock-off called Evermore (Does that mean it's a knock-off of a knock- off?), a book that I didn't like at all. Those similarities dealt with a person dying over and over and being reborn, and his immortality being linked to science. That in itself didn't bother me, I was just hoping the whole time that this story would have more substance than Evermore and in the end I thought that it did.

The science in the book was weak, but it didn't bother me too much. If I can read a book that has vampires and werewolves as real, then I think I can go with this idea too. It did however remind me of one of those old 50s sci-fi movies called Alligator People. Now don't get me wrong, this book isn't that cheesy. No one turns into an alligator in it. It was just the experimentation with the alligator blood that brought it to mind.

I thought there could have been more to the story earlier on than there was. Not a lot happened for a good part of the book. Which makes me wonder why there needs to be a sequel. It probably could have been condensed into one book.

Now on to the positives…

I couldn't put the book down even through what I thought were the negatives. Once I got past the comparisons to other stories, the story itself became enjoyable. The being reborn thing and their fates being tied together for some reason makes it kind of have a Somewhere in Time type feel to it. The romance was nice. I also liked that Sophie seemed to have a good relationship with her mother, and was actually able to talk with her and ask her advice. It definitely looks like it could be the start of a promising series. We shall see.

Sophie knows that Weston has a secret. Somehow, he’s different from other boys his age, and she wants to know why. She’s new to California, and there’s something about Wes that resonates, and it’s something she’s drawn to discover. He’s attractive, yes, but there’s more. As Sophie gets to know Wes, she starts to realize that Wes doesn’t have a singular secret, but several. As Sophie discovers more about Wes, she grows closer to him, and a relationship begins to bloom, but the secrets might be too much to conquer. And time might be to twisted to keep their budding romance alive.

The Pace was completely and utterly refreshing in a sea of YA that is so formulaic. Usually, we get these “Boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall madly in love. Boy and girl can’t live without one another.” Blah. Yawn. The Pace, however, took your average YA formula, turned it on its end, added two dynamic and powerful characters, and threw science, destiny, love and time into a beautiful and haunting story. Author Shelena Shorts has redeemed your YA love story with a rich plot, endearing characters and a powerful message that stays with you.

Sophie was truly a fantastic character. I loved that she was strong and independent, and she wasn’t the least bit wishy-washy! Her voice was honest and had hints of vulnerability, but she never seemed weak – just approachable. Wes was your handsome YA male, but he had depth (thank the Lord!). He had this honest demeanor despite his secrets, and I loved watching the actual relationship between the two characters develop. Most of all though, time was a character, and single action in The Pace had a legitimate reaction. I could actually see the first events in the novel lead to the last, twirling the characters on this mysterious and tumultuous roller-coaster ride.

I am absolutely blown away by The Pace. I expected a pretty good read from the premise, but I didn’t expect it to be that good, and the ending just killed me. I can’t wait to read book two, The Broken Lake. I give The Pace a 4.5 out of 5 (the only deduction being the mildly average premise), and I’d recommend it to all fans of YA, especially those who enjoy fantasy and sci-fi.

Though this book had a promising start, I lost interest rather quickly in both the characters and the plot. The idea that people could be cold-blooded was rather interesting, as was the idea of going through life at a different pace. But, when all was said and done, THIS BOOK WASN'T ABOUT THOSE THINGS--it was mostly about the two main characters talking about how they are in love and how Sophie keeps being reincarnated (or something?) and how they can't be apart a la Edward and Bella but I really felt nothing between them. One of my biggest pet peeves is when two characters tell each other "I love you" too early in their relationship and in the story. I don't care if they are "an old soul" or whatever lame excuse an author tries to make up.

And a large portion of the book is dedicated to building up suspense about who is stealing stuff from the labs about Wes' cold-blooded serum. Now listen here, goodreads friends, Wes has been alive since 1916. He's been out and about for almost a century now interacting with people. It would make perfect sense for the person stealing the *&^% in the labs to be someone that interacted with Wes. But no, instead it is the ex-boyfriend of one of Sophie's reincarnations who got pissed because Wes broke his hand THIRTY YEARS AGO and then was so pissed about that (and a few other things) that he starts taking alligator blood in the army and then stealing from Wes' research labs to make himself immortal. I felt like this was that scene in Role Models where Martin tells a ghost story and then the punchline goes, "and holding the severed head of the
pediatrician's mother in his hand, was Philip, the pizza delivery boy from when they ordered pizza at the beginning of the story!" This ending was just blech. But the author set it up for a second forthcoming book. I don't think I'll be reading it...

I have to say that out of all the books I have ever read this one tops the "OMG" list! The Pace left me in such a state that it has taken me a few days to settle down my nerves and collect my thoughts.
The story is about Sophie and how her life is turned completely upside down by the true love of her life Wes. In the beginning she meets Wes by literally crashing into him. Their journey together starts like most YA novels, he is so beautiful and she feels she doesn't deserve him. I would like for just once the heroine to know she deserves the guy she wants. Another typical trait is that there is something different with the hero. As it turns out Wes is not immortal but for every 30 years he only ages 1 year. The difference with this novel is why he is the way he is and why Sophie is drawn to him. Those two reasons make this novel unforgettable and very unique. I never would have guessed all the surprises that Shorts created.
I am eagerly awaiting the next installment to this series and I have a feeling that the next book will be even better.

The author must have gotten some writing tips from Stephenie Meyer, because this book really reads exactly like Twilight. Sophie and Weston meet and fall in love, he shares his secrets, and then the plot is tacked on as sort of an afterthought. Weston is very similar to Edward. Why do authors feel the need to write about "perfect" rich boys with impeccable manners and virtually no defining characteristics, as if that's interesting in any way? Moreover, the writing, while it probably could have been worse, was not at all good. The book was filled with awkward sentences, like "My face was aggressively overtaken as the fabric was shoved over my mouth and nose" and "He naturally started stroking my hair" (which was written at least twice). Also, the comma seemed to be the favored form of punctuation. Oh, and the concept of alligator blood? I realize the author was trying to do something different, but that idea seemed a little dumb and Weston had a lot of the characteristics of a vampire anyway. All in all I thought this book was boring, without character or excitement or anything to set it apart from other YA novels.

I would have given this book three stars up until the end, which was way too abrupt and just seemed like a money making ploy to sell the next book in the series.

Overall I did get into the story, but I had two problems with it:

1. The writing wasn't great, especially the first 1/4 of the book, which was a lot of I did this, and then I did this, and the next day I did this.

2. The main premise was too similar to the twilight series...average high school girl meets stunning immortal boy and they fall despirately in love. There were a couple of "twists" but they were pretty predictable.

But again, overall I did like it once I made it past the first few chapters and read the whole book in a couple of sittings.

It was nice to read something about somebody with a "special" condition that makes one of the main characters more or less immortal and for once did not involve vampires. (I'm not saying anything about blood) There are very few characters in this book, which felt weird at times. Pretty predictable story, but if I want diversity I shouldn't keep reading this kind of books ^^ so I'm not complaining.

I'm putting the sequel on my reading list, and I hope the story gets better.
