About the author

Troyat was a French author, biographer, historian and novelist.

Troyat was born Levon Aslan Torossian in Moscow to parents of Armenian descent. His family fled Russia in anticipation of the revolution. After a long exodus taking them to the Caucasus on to Crimea and later by sea to Constantinople and then Venice, the family finally settled in Paris in 1920, where young Troyat was schooled and later earned a law degree. The stirring and tragic events of this flight across half of Europe are vividly recounted by Troyat in 'Tant que la terre durera'.

Troyat received his first literary award, Le prix du roman populaire, at the age of twenty-four, and by twenty-seven, he was awarded the Prix Goncourt.

Troyat published more than 100 books, novels and biographies, among them those of Anton Chekhov, Catherine the Great, Rasputin, Ivan the Terrible and Leo Tolstoy.

Troyat's best-known work is La neige en deuil, which was adapted as an English-language film in 1956 under the title The Mountain.

He was elected as a member of the Académie française in 1959. At the time of his death, Troyat was the longest serving member of the Academy.

Тъжен край на разпада на една фамилия. Един човек жертва всичко, заради жена, която не го обича, в резултат на което разбива живота си и живота на децата си.
Трилогията е писана преди голямата революция от 1968 и показва как старите нрави пречат на развитието на новите възможности. Как бавно, но решително се променя живота на големите фамилии и настъпването на независимостта на младите. И затова, че някои не са за семейство. И че всички грешки се плащат, колкото по-късно, толкова по-скъпо.

Един огромен, 3-томов товар , ми падна от раменете. Това определено беше мазохистично изживяване. Явно любопитството ми надделя и успях да стигна до края на тази много противоречива и тъжна история.

Third and last tome in the Eygletiere saga, the story of a Parisian family in the 1960s. Winds of change are blowing through society, the young generation is behaving in ways that their elders can't understand, and the Eygletiere family is no exception. Philippe, the self-centered macho father, is absorbed in the game of hot and cold played by his elegant but conniving second wife, Carole. His oldest son, Jean-Marc, is reluctantly engaged to the well-connected Valerie, but prefers to spend time with her cousin, whom he's tutoring. Daniel, married and father at 18, has switched his boundless enthusiasm from geographical exploration to philosophy. And Francoise, their sister, finds herself in a strange household consisting of her contrarian intellectual of a husband, Alexandre, and his son from a prior relationship, Nicolas. All these characters have to navigate their emotional relationships (Francoise in sexual thrall to a husband who sees no point in contributing to the household in any way; Daniel with his child-wife Dany and baby Christine; Philippe alternatively begging Carole for intimacy and being indifferent to her) and their studies/economic survival.

The book is a good reflection of the times, I think. For instance, everybody smokes. Indoors, outdoors, in restaurants, in the car even. How could people STAND it? Music has to be enjoyed either live, in concerts, or by playing records, and having some one come over to listen to records was a common way of socializing/sharing your possessions with your friends. Alas, the attitudes are equally outdated: all the men in the book, young or old, consider that babies are purely a woman's concern, and all the women in the book are described as wanting babies, thinking about babies, taking care of babies. It's probably not a coincidence that the female villain of the piece, Carole, absolutely does not want to see her figure spoiled by pregnancy.
I also noticed that of the 3 young Eygletieres, the only one who has a true passion for learning is Francoise - and she's the one who has to give up her studies in order to work as a typist to support Alexandre and Nicolas.

There is a double tragedy at the end - and yet the surviving Eygletieres plod on in their new familial and emotional constellations, with Tante Madou still available as an emotional beacon.

Много странна поредица. Хем като я оставиш за малко си мислиш ,че те чакат толкова по-интересни книги ,хем като почнеш да четеш не можеш да я оставиш.Хареса ми тази семейна драма и то не само ,защото прилича на "Богат, беден" ,но и защото по свой начин е специална. Сега какво не ми допадна в последната книга? Първо отсъствието на Мадлен в послендата книга от поредицата . Трябваше да има малко повече подробности за нейния живот. И другото ,което не ми хареса беше заглавието.Това не е краят на семейството . Филип получи това ,което заслужаваше. Единственото ужасно събитие беше смъртта на Жан-Марк.

Трилогията "Ейглетиерови" определено е една от най -впечатляващите семейни трагедии, които съм чела.Непомторимият френски стил не ме разочарова и този път.
