Young Arthur

Rate this book
To protect his life, Arthur, son of King Uther, was hidden from the court when still a baby. Growing up in Sir Ector's household, Arthur knew nothing of his noble birth. Then one day at a tournament, he forgot to bring a sword for his brother, Kay. Looking for a replacement, Arthur saw a strange sword plunged into a stone. From the moment he released the famous sword he assumed his destiny as the rightful King of England. But there were still battles to be fought, and with Merlin's help and the famous Excalibur at his side, Arthur established a reign of nobility, justice, and wisdom whose fame has lasted to the present day.

Young Arthur Medieval Legend by Robert D. San Souci - Review
The American writer, Robert D. San Souci, is famous for his books for children. His most important works were about The Legends of King Arthur.

The legends are probably based upon a real-life person who lived in Britain around A.D. 500. Despite the fact that the time of the knights was much later, thanks to many legends and novels, this epoch is now well known as the era of King Arthur And The Knights of Round Table.

The author described how vulnerable the dynasty was during that time. He wrote about the enemies of a king who wished to take over his kingdom. He also wrote about how his enemies might try to kill his son. The stories about King Arthur speaks of how the young king came into his royal power, with the help of a savior and magical events. Those events were described by the author as if they were true. Readers who like historical books would find this narration interesting and instructive.

I picked this up for my son because I recalled enjoying Young Guinevere (by the same author) when I was a kid. It's a simple, straightforward retelling of the Sword in the Stone, with Arthur getting Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake summarily tacked on. As with Guinevere, the vivid illustrations really make it stand out.

I appreciate how the author made the story of King Arthur more accessible than heavier tomes like Morte D'Arthur. This is a great prequel to those who want to delve more deeply into tales of Camelot and Arthurian legends.

I would read this book to second graders. It would teach them about legends and the lesson of "everything happens for a reason."

The illustrations are very nicely done. But a little too much emphasis of Christian themes for the stories to be very enjoyable.

For sure read this! Best picture book we've found about Arthur and the sword in the stone! I'd read this one first, then Young Guinevere, then Young Lancelot. (Skip Young Merlin).
