Author biographies are supposed to give you all those statistics, books written, awards won, etc. and I will, I promise...but first let me tell you about this ornery little tomboy (back then, the boys had all the fun...) who was always the one to make up the stories the neighborhood kids would "play". For those who came of age in the computer game era, this is something that was done usually in the backyard, by any number of summer-bored children, with props where appropriate. (Did you know a 55 gallon drum tied to a picnic bench makes a very cool horse?) It wasn't until much later that this tomboy realized two things: A) not everyone made up stories in their heads all the time, and B) in real life, the boys that had already had all the fun now seemed to always be winning.
But I digress. I was born on a farm down in Iowa....well, not quite, but close; Boone, Iowa is in the middle of farm country, but I arrived at a hospital. In a snow storm. Make that a blizzard. My sister tells me she knew my destiny when I was very young, because when I first saw the Disney classic Old Yeller, I was apparently so upset that I promptly went home and rewrote the story. In my version, the dog lived, of course. Should have been a clue.
Possibly in response to that blizzard I was born in, I've been a West Coaster since before I was a year old, and intend to stay that way. I have a history of staying. I started my first full time job right out of school (well, there was a very brief sojourn at a place where they made, among other things, burial vaults, but I prefer not to recall that one...) and stayed for twenty-one years. I've been married to the same wonderful guy for going on two decades now. We lived in our last house for seventeen years. (I won't even mention how many dumpsters we filled moving after that long....)
Readers seem as fascinated by my first career as they are with my writing. My time in law enforcement was many things, exciting, nerve wracking, and irritating, but most importantly never, ever boring. It was fascinating enough that I didn't think about writing seriously for several years. I kept a journal, and wrote long letters, collected quotes, mentally rewrote movies, and still made up those stories in my head, but never dreamed of actually writing for publication. I was having too much fun helping to catch bad guys, and being continually amazed at the situations people get themselves into. And eventually I walked away with a wealth of background and story ideas, and knowing some truly great people who work very hard to keep all of us safe. I'm proud to have been one of them, and I'm very aware that I have had the great good fortune of having had two jobs in my life that I love. Many people don't get even one.
But now that I'm in the delicious position of being able to make a living telling those stories in my head, I promise my readers two things: A) I'm staying--I'll keep writing as long as you keep reading, and B) in my stories, the girl--tomboy or not--always wins!

This eagerly awaited book transports readers into a science fiction landscape that features an extremely well structured world. Essentially we have the Coalition doing their best to conquer the galaxy and caring not at all for any loss of life or liberty. Caze is their most highly decorated war hero but following an horrific accident he's sent to run operations on the planet that the Coalition have oppressed in order to steal a valuable ore. The rebels have a weapon though that is way beyond the comprehension of those serving the Coalition and its a woman who should be dead ! Iolana has lost so much and yet is ready to fight for her family, her planet and a future that is inconceivable to someone as shutoff as Caze but it's a future worth fighting for . One of the highlights of this series is that the women are charged with saving themselves and creating their own happiness with the men surrounding them just one part of the process. Iolana is quintessential to the events that unfold and I thought it was high time she could finally become the heart of her family again. Caze might be a warrior but his curiosity and morality stand out throughout this story. Obviously we see more of characters that have previously had their own adventures told but ironically I did think it worked very well as a standalone book. Yes its a well crafted space opera in many ways but the author never rushes nor fills endless pages with unnecessary romance. Perhaps a little too wordy in places but nevertheless a story that kept me glued until the very last page. This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
Over the course of this series within a series, possibly due to giving us the POV of *this* H, we finally get an inside look at what it means to be coalition. And...we get a view of an officer slowly coming to grips with how things are on the outside. So now it's his turn.
Caze Paledan was assigned here to recuperate. Of course, the injury in question isn't one you really recuperate from as a land mine left him with a piece of shrapnel in his spine. Fairly early on, he makes a sudden move which causes it to shift. Since he's meeting with the Raider in an attempt to convince him to back off, he's rescued...and...healed...by the enemy.
As he recuperates - for real this time - he interacts with the Raider's mom quite a bit. They take him back after he's fully healed and he, being the sort he is (not really a good Coalition soldier as he uses his brain), looks into things she'd suggested. Something happens as a result of this and he makes a decision. Well, not much of a decision really since the alternative is execution.
If I had to describe him, he's sort of like one of the Arrows (psy-changeling) in that he's had most all emotions squashed. So in a huge way, this is his coming out of a shell. That awakening is something I find fascinating.
The h is the mother of the H in Raider. The previous books have seen her kids coming to terms with her survival and not telling them of it - she tried to kill herself some 11 years prior. That's...a lot of baggage. She's a healer and a seer, the latter part being one of the reasons she tried to kill herself as the visions for her son hot on the heels of her mate's being killed by the coalition drove her to despair. She tries not to feel sorry for herself though. If anything, she's as fascinated by the H as he of her (he has a painting of her in storage and has been mildly obsessed with it)
I'm mildly curious to see if there will be others in the series.
This is the sixth book in the Coalition series and in my opinion is the best to date by the Author .
Caze Paladen, one of the coalition's most decorated commanders is tasked with bring the rebels of Ziem to to hand ………….. otherwise both the planet's and his future are most probably over . With a fragment of metal near his spine Caze knows that he can die at any time , he struggles against the constant pain but knows his duty ……. or does he ? He begins to understand that all he has known in the past is not the real truth , the Coalition have lied to him , and not just him , but all raised like him . When circumstances bring him face to face with Iolana Davorin " The Spirit if Ziem" he initially fights against all that he learns and against the attraction raging between them …... . BUT the more he learns , he realises that all bets are off …………… the Coalition can go to hell , literally , and he adds his intellect and resources to the Rebel cause to free the planet once and for all .
This is a stunning conclusion to this series …………….I hope there are more to come in the fight against the Coalition . I was given an ARC of this book by Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I'd give it 10 stars if I could. I'm a big Justine Davis fan. I'll read anything she writes. All the books in this series are great but this one might be my favorite. I love a good redemption story and this one was great. I adored the hero. He was such a great hero. He was the ultimate between a rock and a hard place. Really liked the heroine too. Together with all the characters from the previous stories they made a fascinating book. Can't say more because I don't want to spoil anything is this wonderful book. Loved it!
A third story of the planet Ziem and it’s battle with the Coalition. Caze Paledon and the Spirit of Ziem, Iolana Davorin facing huge challenges in freeing Ziem.
The third book in Ziem and the sixth in Coalition, Renegade, is well worth the read. I enjoyed the story and the characters and will look to recommend and read more.
Loved the hero--I was happy to see him featured as he was already a point of interest in the previous books. I wasn't sure about the heroine, but the hero alone makes up for it. The twins were as much fun as ever.
I am so sad to see this series end. Hopefully the author writes more.
