Mountain Mercenaries #5

Defending Everly

Rate this book
A Wall Street Journal bestseller.

The stakes are personal, hot, and dangerous in New York Times bestselling author Susan Stoker’s riveting Mountain Mercenaries novel.

As tough as Everly Adams may be, the Colorado Springs SWAT officer is near a breaking point. Her fifteen-year-old half sister, Elise, has disappeared from Los Angeles without a trace, and the window to find her is closing fast. Committed to the search is Mountain Mercenary Kannon “Ball” Black. He and Everly already have a history—of rubbing each other the wrong way.

Still, Everly has to admit the man is heart-stopping. His brash alpha swagger takes her breath away. And most importantly, as a former Coast Guard first responder, Ball has what it takes to bring Elise home.

Nobody’s buying the LAPD’s “runaway” theory. And the fear that Elise is the victim of a human trafficking ring is a gut-punch that Everly and Ball can’t ignore. If only the trail were that clear cut. Because the one they’re following is more insidious and intimately dark than they could have imagined.

Now as the bond between Everly and Ball grows stronger, so does the heat. And as the stakes rise, so does the danger.

Ok, I think this is my new favorite in the series. There were so many good things about Ball and Everly's story. Everly is a kick butting police officer and you do get to see her skills in this. I love a heroine who can hold her own.

Ball had me a little nervous at first. He is very obviously jaded about women but the author did such a good job of turning him around. It was subtle and realistic when he realized that just maybe he wasn't thinking full picture based off his past experiences. He gracefully acknowledged he was wrong. Good job Ball!

I really loved the addition of Elise's character. She is Everly's little sister who is deaf. This created so many great scenes with Ball and the rest of the Mountain Mercenary crew. The way Ball wanted to learn ASL was so endearing. Really how he treated Elise from day one had me loving him.

The best part was the plot. While very scary in real life, it made for an exciting and fast paced read in the book. We also get a glimpse into the next book and I gotta say that was cruel Susan Stoker! How do you expect us to wait after that preview???

The Mountain Mercenaries has been my favorite series from Susan Stoker and I've loved every book and every character in it. Ball was a little hard to gauge up until now but I loved being able to dig deeper into his character. It took some time for him to open up to Everly and to see that she was capable as a partner and the journey those discoveries took him on was brilliant.

Everly was a kickass heroine and I loved getting to see how tough she was throughout this story. She was gong through a really hard time with her sister, Elise, missing but she held it together so that she could go with Ball and find Elise. I admired the strength she had and it had me rooting for her character. And even Elise's, who I thought was a great addition to this group.

Overall, this series gets a huge recommend from me. I think the books are better off read in order, especially since the epilogue's usually have the next book's characters featured in them, but they could be read out of order.

ARC kindly provided in exchange for an honest review.

DEFENDING EVERLY by Susan Stoker. I honestly do not know how Ms. Stoker does it, but once again she stole my heart with this tale. I went into this one a bit hesitant as kick butt heroines are not always my favorite (I like heroines to be strong, but now always in a physical sense - I am a true lover of damsel in distress!) However, Ms. Stoker proved me wrong. I adored Everly - she is strong, inside and out, and tender and gentle but confident too. Ball, well, he certainly had to win me over more so than Everly! He needed time to open up and accept, not only Everly, but his shortcomings as well. Everly's sister, Elise, was a wonderful addition to this story. I liked that we saw her POV throughout and the bond these two shared as well. Of course, being Susan Stoker, there is danger and mystery and suspense too which just ramps up my like. Ms. Stoker writes some nasty villains and comes up with some terrifying scenarios for her characters to go through, which keeps me turning the pages and reading more and more. This entire series has been a delight to read and it is credited to Ms. Stoker's writing style, cast of characters and intense and crazy plot lines. Cannot wait for more from this amazing author.

Beautiful well-crafted story!

This was my first Susan Stoker book i have read but it won't be my last. This was a captivating read that had me immersed from the beginning. The story had every element a good story should have. An interesting plot, attention to detail, steaminess, sweetness, but best of all, fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. I thoroughly enjoyed Kannon “Ball” and Everly's story and I’ll be looking forward to reading more from this author in the future and to know more about the Mountain Mercenary crew. A well-deserved four solid stars for me!

Feel good romantic suspense...

This author’s stories are chock-a-block full of strong men and women which has made the Mountain Mercenaries series so fun to read. This time out saw Ball and Everly battling the unknown in their frantic search for Elise.

I loved how Elise was portrayed – a teenager dealing with all the usual growing up issues plus a wee bit more. She was smart but still a kid and searching for answers in all the places, including where she shouldn’t. How it was dealt with felt true to reality, including her gut-wrenching fear and tension.

Ball and Everly’s journey from reluctant partners in the search to unexpected supporters. Their fear was no less real and all the emotions they had were close to the surface. Hate and love were a big part of this romantic suspense and it was felt in every snarky exchange, each hard fought battle. My favourite part? Ball's connection with Elise which revealed so much of his true character. Secondary characters, including Everly’s grandparents, stole their moments and made this family-focused romance even better.

Another great read in the series! ~Diane, 4.5 stars

Defending Everly is book 5 in the Mountain Mercenaries by Susan Stoker.
Even though it’s my first read in this series, I didn’t feel lost when reading this book. But I definitely will go and start reading this series because I want to know more of them.
Loved it. Loved that Everly is a strong brave heroine. She was kick@ss!!
Everly Adams is a SWAT officer who’s sister has disappeared and she goes to The Mercenaries for help.
Kannon “Ball” Black doesn’t like working with women and he showed it at the beginning, but he quickly turned around when he realized Everly is not like the women in his past.
Loved the relationship between Ball and Elise, Everly’s sister.
Also loved that he learned sign language to communicate with her.
Great read and had me hooked since the beginning.

My Rating: 5 STARS!!

This is book 5 in the Mountain Mercenaries series but it can be read as a standalone. Everly and Kannon are looking for her sister after she went missing. They need to hurry because the time to find her is running out. Is she a runaway or is it something more serious? The characters were so real and the storyline was well done. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat and you won’t want to put it down.

I received an ARC from NetGalley and I am voluntarily leaving a honest review.

***5 Stars***

This was a quick, interesting, intense and fun read. Not that I’m all that surprised considering how much I’ve loved all the books that came before this one, but considering what happened the first time Ball and Everly collided...well, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this baby and I wasn’t disappointed at all!

I loved Everly and Ball. Everly is strong, determined, intelligent and has a compassionate heart. What I really liked about her was that she owned all that she was and didn’t need to constantly prove that she could do her job. Ball. This man. Outside of his issues, the man has a really good heart. He takes pride in what he does and is loyal to those he calls his own.

Ball and Everly’s journey was definitely an interesting one, especially considering how horrible of a start they had. But I enjoyed watching as they worked through it and found that they could, and wanted to, rely on each other as more than just partners on an op. I loved their bantering, flow and how they handled their relationship in the midst of the crazy going on around them.

As I said at the start, I’ve enjoyed all the books in this series. The family dynamic between all the Mountain Mercenaries and those they call their own is one of my favorite aspects of this author’s writing. But this one was definitely unique for me and much of it was because of Elise. I loved what her character brought to the story and how it made it unique from all the others.

Don’t let the title fool you. Everly can and does defend herself. She is a police/SWAT officer and enlists assistance of the Mountain Mercenaries to locate her missing teenaged sister. Ball has had negative experiences in his past when working with women and is biased. Everly quickly and effortlessly changes his mind and his heart. Their romance is one of mature adults and leaves the reader full of hope. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is the story of Mountain Mercenary Kannon Black aka Ball, and  Colorado Springs SWAT Everly Adams.

Everly's 15 year old half-sister is missing she disappeared from Los Angelos without a trace and the window to find her is closing fast.

Ball along with the other Mountain Mercenaries are going to help find her sister. She and Ball got off on the wrong foot. Will they be able to forget about the animosity they feel towards each other and find her sister?

Another great story by Susan Stoker I love her books. The characters are real with real emotions and feelings. I cannot wait for the next one. I would highly reccomend this book and series.

I I receieved a free copy of this book this is my honest review. I would purchase this book for myself or friend or family member.  Susan is such a great writer.

I've read a lot of Susan Stoker books and really loved them--but "Defending Everly" is a book that's going on my L-O-V-E shelf. Kannon and Everly are a pair of smart, sophisticated protagonists that grabbed my heart--and many times, my funny bone!--but most of all, the deepest parts of my soul.
The plot is fast-paced, as many of Ms. Stoker's best works are, but the love story that's woven into this one is spun of pure feeling and connection, threading these two people's lives in ways that extend beyond their physical attraction. While that spice is definitely there as well, these two have to discover it between finding a truly despicable bad guy, as well as prioritizing others above themselves. That factor doesn't detract from the story. It adds to their nobility, which made me root even more for them as a couple.
I'm always so thrilled to read this amazing author--but with this book, the experience was an un-put-downable story. I loved these two from start to finish. Take me to the mountains with these wonderful mercenaries! What a series--and what a phenomenal love story.

This is Everly Adams and Kannon “Ball” Black’s story; book 5 in the Mountain Mercenaries series. A standalone, happily ever after, no cheating action romance with sizzle.
Two people who started off on the wrong foot, look beyond first impression and learn what each is really made of. The story was well developed, great characterization with lots of action and sizzle.
I have read all in this series so far and can’t wait for the next!
Although this is a standalone, the Epilogue is a big tease, setting up for Meat’s story, the next in the series.
I received a copy of this story through NetGalley for my honest opinion.

It seems only fitting that I leave my review of Defending Everly by Susan Stoker on Christmas Eve. For me, this was upending my stocking and finding nothing but goodness. The 5th book in the Mountain Mercenaries series is about Kannon "Ball" Black. IMO Ball has been one of the quieter characters that Ms. Stoker has written about. He's fairly normal (well as normal as a SS alpha can be) without a lot of angst in his background. Now Everly...she's a different bag of kittens altogether. A CSPD and member of the S.W.A.T. team, Everly is no shrinking violet. This doesn't mean that she is not without some "issues" but she's more than capable of taking care of her own problems. So how do these two mix?? Like Bailey's & Hot Chocolate (I had to get another Christmas reference in here :P)! Smooth and hot with a little bit of burn...

So now that I've gotten the corny puns out of the way, let me give you a little more insight into this goodness...it has parts that will make you chuckle, shed a few tears, and get that all around fuzzy feeling. The story is interesting with a few sharp turns that you might not see coming. There's visitation and fun with our circle of friends and of course, it wouldn't be a true SS book without some foreshadowing of books to come.

Now if my shrewdly worded review of this book did not make you want to one-click you are TOTALLY missing out! Do yourself a favor...don't worry which list you are on..just make sure to add Defending Everly to your TBR list!! Happy holidays to all and to all a GOODNIGHT!

The end...

This is book 5 in the Mountain Mercenaries series and it can absolutely be read as a stand alone however I recommend reading the books previous to this one so that you understand the relationships between the characters and some of the things that are mentioned that happened in previous books. This one is about Kannon “Ball” Black and Everly Adams. Ball and Everly got off on the wrong foot from the get go. Everly, who is also a SWAT officer, has come to the Mountain Mercenaries to get help in finding her 15 year old sister. Her fear is that a human trafficking ring has taken her, and if so they only have a short time in order to find her or she will be gone for good. Ball has his reason's for not wanting to work with a woman. But when he is forced to work with Everly, he is also forced to confront those reason's and realize that they can't be attributed to all women. But in working with Everly he also starts to care about her and what happens to her. But when things aren't what they seem in her sister's kidnapping-can he keep not only her sister safe but the woman he has come to love?

I absolutely loved this one!! Ball has so many issues with women in jobs like his that at first you just want to kick him. But once you find out why, it makes a lot more sense. But then he comes to the realization that it's not all women and I love how he is after that! Everly is this kick butt woman who knows her own worth and has no problem standing up for the people she loves. And she is ready and willing to do anything for the people she lets into her circle. And I love that about her! This book has not only romance and suspense but a lot of action as well. I loved it!

Mountain Mercenaries🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Everly is a cop 👮‍♀️ and SWAT officer, who enlists the help of the Mountain Mercenaries when her deaf sister disappears after school one day. Unfortunately, Ball isn’t keen to work with a woman on his team due to some of his past experiences, but he’s the one roped into going to LA with the sexy woman❣️

This story was amazing...(even though the scenario itself is quite heartbreaking),in the sense that even when a situation makes you feel helpless, determination and hope are both essential. Ball and Everly even though it appears they dislike each other in the beginning, they rely more and more on the other person in times of stress, until the point neither knows what they would do without the other😍 Ball makes a concerted effort to learn MORE, which you’ll understand once you read the story....sorry no spoilers here, which made me fall in love with him and wish my name was Everly💕

A fantastic story nonetheless and I know we are closer to Meat’s story and potentially Rex’s as well😁 I received an advanced copy via Netgalley and would like to thank the publisher and Susan for a chance to review this great love story and voluntarily leave my honest review🤩

Defending Everly (Mountain Mercenaries #5) by Susan Stoker
5 stars
M/F Thriller Romance
Triggers: Human trafficking
I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.

This is Kannon's book and I've loved each and every one of the Mountain Mercenaries' books. You should get them all! However, this could be read as a standalone book. You might miss some of the relationship nuances, but overall, this could be read as a standalone.

Everly is a strong, independent SWAT officer who knows that her younger sister didn't just run away. Everly knows that something is wrong and she asks the Mountain Mercenaries to help. But, her first impression of Kannon is less than stellar.

Kannon "Ball" has been burned a few times by women he cared about so when he hears that a civilian, and a female civilian at that, will be accompanying the mission, he voices his objections loudly...with her standing right behind him.

As Ball and Everly try and figure out where Elise could be and who might have taken her, they also discover things about each other that help them see past that horrible first impression. Ball realizes that he did treat the women in his life differently - his own bias shown through without him thinking it had. Everly realized that Ball was protecting himself and that she didn't have to feel guilty about finding herself before reaching out to help her younger sister.

This is action packed and full of slow burn chemistry. I love that Everly can surprise Ball and vice versa. These two have an attraction that goes beyond the physical. It's their minds and abilities that draw them to each other. I loved this story and loved that this was another independent, strong woman who finds her happily ever after.

We are back with the Mountain Mercenaries and this time it’s Kannon “Ball” Black’s story.
Everly Adams is a cop and SWAT team member in Colorado. When her young teenage half sister Elise is kidnapped in LA, she goes to the Mountain Mercenaries for help.
The man that is send to help her is Ball, a man that does not want to work with a woman due to his past experiences and betrayals.
But the life of Elise is in danger and he’s determined to find her no matter what. As time goes on , they both realize their prejudices about each other is wrong and a relationship begins.
The story was engaging and thought provoking in various ways. Deaf individuals are just like us . Frequently more sensitive and with a keen senses of awareness. Elise was an intelligent, sweet and strong teenager. Sadly, we are also reminded that human trafficking is real . Especially with children and teenagers.
The characters were complex and once again, the author fgives us a strong female character.
As the book ends , we are left with the disappearance of one of the members of the Mountain Mercenaries. Leading us to the next book in the series.
Though it’s a stand alone, this reader highly recommends that you read the previous books in their order for a more in depth appreciation of all the characters.
I was entrusted a copy of this book by Netgalley and Montlake Romance. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

So the first thing I would recommend...please start any series by Susan Stoker. This book is the 5th in her Mountain Mercenaries series. First thing I will say...I don't think it is a spoiler alert, but Me-Maw and Pop are everything. This is the story of Kannon "Ball" and Everly. As they look for her sister, Ball and Ev have to both learn to trust each other. So much of their personal struggles. And past situations have them off to a rough start. It is in the Susan Stoked fashion they will learn to trust each other to accomplish the goal..the mission. The mission is to find Everly's sister Elise. In this book we again get yo see loyalty of a team, the most intelligent women, and amazing writing. Sidenote. Susan seems to embrace what people seem to see as disabilities or a handicap or just different as a strength and not a weakness. I highly recommend this book, as well as all of the Mountain Mercenaries books before this. Please enjoy.

When Everly's sister Elise is kidnapped she has to work with Ball to find her as quickly as possible, but there first meeting is awful as Ball has compilations in the past working with females and Everly heard what he said and because she is a police women she gives as good back. Will they be able to work together to find Elise before anything happens to her. I love this book so much and I love the chemistry between them as it is so hot that you can feel it coming of the page's. I have read many of Susan's books and I have enjoyed reading every single one. I definitely recommend you read this book and others by her and you will not be disappointed as they are so well written.

This book will keeping on the edge of your seat. Sex trafficking is in the news everyday and is a plague on humanity. Defending Everly highlights this terrible activity and even though it is fiction, defeats the bad guys. Everly's deaf half sister is kidnapped twice and is rescued by the Mountain Mercenaries. Defending Everly is Book 5 of the Mountain Mercenaries series and stands perfectly fine on its own however the back story does continue to build and the characters from the other stories, do appear throughout.

Each story in this series continues to get better and better, which is no small feat since I've enjoyed them all. I loved the interactions between Ball and Everly and the slow burn between them was off the charts. Having a daughter the same age as Everly's sister does hit a little close to home and is a good reminder about reinforcing staying safe online.

Good story.
Typical Susan stoker novel though this series has a darker side, being willing to cross lines to keep people safe.
Deaf character which added a little extra.
Hero and heroine have an issue at the start as Hero messes up due to difficult experience in his past.
Loyal, protective Hero.
Strong heroine.
HEA.
Secondary characters that could have possible future storylines developing through the series and updates of previous characters in series.

Susan Stoker is a master at writing action and adventure romance stories. I think this is my new favorite in the series. This created so many great scenes with Ball and the rest of the Mountain Mercenary crew. Ball was so amazing with her – learning sign language so he could talk to her. Thank you Susan for another fantastic read!
