In 1994, I thought I was Older and Wiser!

I was wrong. I had high blood pressure, was getting close to my fiftieth year - with its concomitant mid-age crisis (and I was having a Whopper) - but I remained in a numb Haldol Daze.

Yes, my Haldol (a wacky variety of neuroleptic drug) Days put me in a dozy daze.

I got it monthly, by butt injection. Right afterwards (usually an hour later, after a morning injection, now back at work), I would bump into walls constantly.

Of course, I cast my dignity to the wind.

When I got back to my humongous (I was a junior manager with a middle management job) cubby-hole, Heather, the gal who supervised my troops - four more able-minded workers - quipped if I was anymore relaxed I'd be asleep!

Or dead, maybe. Alas.

Oh, well.

I was a survivor at heart!

But, alas, a workplace facilitator for con men with my lily-white soul of an Aspie on haldol.
***

But, in 1994 I had to take it in pill form. I was working half days for a while. And this Chicken Soup book along with daily rations - back then, Cogentin, Saltpetre, and a peanut butter sandwich - helped ease my recovery.

(The "saltpetre" - the pill form of the neuroleptic - repressed my rampant Male restlessness.) Later, my medically-prescribed Risperdal removed the need for it, MAJORLY!

Win some - lose some.

But it sure did a big number on my bipolar excitement -

Like using a zany kinda neutron bomb on a gnats' nest.)
***

Chicken Soup books, therefore, were good tools to get this midaged self-dispossessed soul back into the Flow.

They were accordingly at breaks much appreciated by this thirsty and secretively alienated ostrich with a beak fulla subterranean sand (if I went to wide-awake meetings while yet days away from my monthly haldol brain-erasing I'd fall victim to their radioactive fallout in my subconscious).

And much laughed at by them and by me, a haldol-harried manager who, after a shot, once accidently spilt his coffee all over the classified government files on his desk!

They had their modicum of comic release, bless 'em all, my doughty but unsung troops.

You just had to be there to believe it.

My "troops" resented the iron discipline of our unit:

And sat slack-jawed at my outbursts of Aspie hilarity under the weighty yoke of my sealed lips (they didn't do the math at all the oh-so dark implications of our work) at my own expense.

You woulda laffed... Or shaken your head.

Or maybe neither!

As I do now.
***

However, all this proved to be the advent of the Morning Star.

My life had previously been that of but an autistic kid on steroids…

Now it was all stress and angst with the entire chain of senior management on my medicated case!

But, thirty years later -

In 2024 -

It is the true Dawn of Sacrificed Love for me.

My daily household forbearance attests to that…

I’m Just Like Someone Without Mental Illness only More So!

Lots of great stories for anyone interested in the lives of their older family and friends. You will hear stories of love, joy, gratefulness, friendship, sisters and husbands and wives. There are also stories of pets and their owners. The men and women included are sometimes stereotyped (little old lady, frail, feisty, elderly, etc.) rather than be called an adult, older or old woman or man.

Other than than that, this book has stories that are warm, hilarious, joyful and filled with lessons from life.

I loved the quotes and the stories. I plan to copy some of the quotes into my journal to keep the positive energy from this book fresh in my mind.
