Thoughts on the ending:

On the romance: Eh. On the one hand, I like Oliver. It was sort of fun to read about. Lots of angst. But also just eh.

On the academy aspect: Complete Harry Potter vibes. It's ridiculous. Kind of fun, but it got to be a bit much toward the end. There was a letter, a sorting hat (sorry, magical pool that sorted people), a he shall not be named villain (whose name I don't know how to pronounce), a chosen one, a prophecy, and a magic wand.

On the overall world: We only learned about the dragons. Nothing on the other races. So the world building was a bit disappointing.

So, this story was basically Harry Potter + dragons + some romance. But whatever. I did like it, but I'm also disappointed in the ending. It felt like a copout. However, it was one of the better academy books I've read this year. 3.5 stars. Oh, and the editing had some (more minor) issues.

Too awesome

This book was incredible. I'm exploring different genres and have come to love epic fantasy. Being a writer myself I was quickly drawn into this story and desire to read more.

Not good.

So I thought this would be a great book. But i couldn’t even finish it. The author had a good plot but failed to give details. It’s rushed. Relationships form out of nowhere. If you’re going to write a book, details are needed for background information. Not sure how there is a second book when this one was so terrible. More details. Stop rushing situations in the book. It’s very choppy and does not flow well at all.

An Exciting Read Focused On Friendship & Bonds!!🐉🎓🙏💜 4.25 Stars 🌟
Dragon Academy: Dragon Riders Academy, Book 1
Audiobook – Unabridged 🎧
A.K. Thorne (Author)
Kim Reiko (Narrator)
Gryfyn Publishing (Publisher)

Sorcha is living with vile, abusive Foster Parents, after being in a car accident that cost her her real Parents & all of her memories!!💔😭 She's desperately squirrelling away all the money she earns at her coffee shop job to attend Nursing School, she can't wait to get away from the spiteful & neglectful couple! While at work with the owner & her one true friend, she goes into the basement to get napkins & finds the most bazaar thing - A baby Dragon!🐉😍 She thinks she's losing her mind.😵 He's so cute though & she feels such an instant bond with him, he snuggles into her arms & licks her face like he loves her already!😍🙏💜

Over the next couple of days her life changed drastically. She helps heal someone that would've died from a brutal murder, then she receives a letter telling her she's expected to start at 'Dracon Academy' with her Dragon in a couple of days to start her training as a Dragon Rider!!😱 It doesn't have any other information though so she still plans to go to Nursing , that is until a huge raging storm rolls in. She's been staying at her bosses apartment & when she hears a crash downstairs & goes to investigate she's attacked!😳😡 They throw the bag she's got Toryn, her Dragon, hidden in across the room, grab her hair & smack her in the face!😳 Its her Foster Parents 😟😥 They're mad because she hasn't been home & her housework is piling up, like she's their darn slave or something!!😡 When she fights back the beating gets out of hand, the door crashes open & boss screams at - Get your hands off of my sister!!😱 Ashling gets them out of there & takes her to small cottage, grabs her hand & tells her not to let go then drags in to a painting.🙈💥

On emerging she finally fills Sorcha in. They're not from Earth, they're from a Dragon Rider Clan & an Evil Rider is after Sorcha. It's believed she's the prophesied return of the great Mother Of All Dragon's who is the only one who can save them from the greatest evil they'll ever face - the guy who wants her dead!!😱😵💥 She left their world for their protection & here and insisted they wipe her memories so she couldn't risk them, now it's time for her to return & train so she can beat the bad guys & oh yeah, her Parents might still be alive!🙏💕 It seems too incredible & too much.

From stepping into the pool that shows your power, at the Academy, everyone knows who is. She's watched, talked about & judged!😕 Nothing is really what she thought it would be.

This is a lively, often fun and fast paced read. I thought the Narrator did a good job, she kept it interesting & had a good variation of character voices.👍 I found Sorcha a bit annoying at times. Oliver & Ember were interesting, he was especially intriguing!😍 Above all I adored the Dragon's!💙💖✨
Definitely worth a read/listen!🎧

I listened to the audiobook so I’ll give my thoughts on performance as well:

At first I wasn’t sure about this narrator for this book but she did an excellent job. Also the male voices are done by male narrators, whichwas very surprising at first but I like it. It is always a bit more believable than the female straining herself to do a male voice, although I love it when the narrators do those different voices. The many accents both done by Kim and the male narrator added to the feel that it includes students (and other characters) from 4 different clans on different islands in a whole other world.

The story itself... wow. I absolutely loved it. It’s like the caring for animal parts in Harry Potter, only not much variety in all sorts of mystical creatures but a lot more variety in dragons than most books that involve dragons and of course dragon riders. The minute a person from Draconia bonds with a dragon hatchling he or she becomes a dragon rider but the first six months the dragon is too small to be independent and really needs to be cared for. And of course, all other aspects have to be learned as well, both by the dragons as their riders. Hence: Dragon Academy! All the classes in the Dragon Academy explaining the caring bits were so lovely. Sadly there is a real need to know how to protect so fighting classes are very necessary as well, sadly because I’d rather have them safe but being safe all the time doesn’t really fill out a whole book so it’s not thing I hate about the book, it’s just me empathizing with the habitants of Draconia. So the Academy is not only for those first six months but entail 4 years of caring for their dragons, mastering their own skills, fighting classes, protecting, the history of Draconia and everything else we will learn in the sequels of this fantastic first book set in an awesome world!

Although the story does begin in the normal world, the majority takes place on the Draken Islands (? -since I listened to the audiobook I don’t know the correct spelling) in Draconia. Besides the academy, there’s a prophecy (so there is a chosen one, just so you know if that’s not your thing) and a dark lord with his dark riders that are trying to kill not only all the other dragons to take their powers for themselves but also hunt the chosen one, who is basically the reincarnation of The Mother of all Dragons, for she is prophesied be the downfall of that dark lord, Dracao (don’t shoot me if I misspelled his name too please) who plagues the world.
But eventhough she alone can end all wars and be the salvation of all dragons, she has much to learn first! So let’s bring on those sequels!

**Come visit me at https://smadasbooksmack.blogspot.com/ **

This was very much like Harry Potter (I am such a sucker for magical academy stories!) meets Eragon/How to Train Dragons- with a lot of dirty thoughts added in. We have the chosen one who has no idea who she really is or about the magic world where everyone knows about her, terrible guardians who use her as a maid, a academy to be sent to where magic is taught, the students go through a color sorting ceremony when starting school, the evil one is somehow connected to Sorcha, there is a war between two different factions to change the way things are run, and there is a headmaster who seems to know more than he is saying- Sounds familiar? And then we have a whole world dealing with dragons, including stores and spas and outfits and dragon dating and riding. It was complicated and detailed and I loved all aspects of it and how both parts of the story meshed really well.

Sorcha was entertaining, totally in awe and overwhelmed by this crazy world she found herself in, yet at the same time she battles her very lust filled thoughts (she kind of reminded me of a horny teen boy at times, so I was surprised that she was actually a virgin) and tries to find her place. She wants so much to be just one of the pack instead of this magical chosen one that everyone expects her to be. She has a hard time battling doing what her morals say is right and what this conflicted world says to do. I absolutely love Torrin! He was like an overexcited needy puppy and I loved his antics (as well as his voice at the end of the book)

This was an interesting audiobook experience for me. The story was predominantly narrated by a female narrator for Sorcha, but then whenever there was a male voice, a male narrator was inserted into the story. I was super surprised the first few times it occurred, not even a little bit expecting that. Both narrators did a good job but it was a little odd and I am not completely certain how I feel about it, but it did make it seem more like having a conversation between two people I guess.

Overall I really enjoyed this introduction to the dragon riders world. The ending shows that so much more is going to happen in the series and I would love to read the next book to see what Sorcha and Torrin do next.

Love the narrator! She is my new favorite. I loved her feelings and expressions through the entire book.

Minor plot spoilers ahead.

There were so many feelings during this book. I really felt pulled in! When she left him in the woods I was like Noooo! Don't leave. But was happy how it all ended. There were so many things that I did not see coming and really liked how everything happened. Finding out who her sister was and then why she didn't remember. I really think there is a bigger plot point to this and think it has to do with the shadow riders but I need to know. hoping it is in the next book!

The romance was kinda weird. She seemed very mature but the relationship building seemed alot more innocent than what Sorchas inner thoughts portrayed.

That ending! I really do understand why it ended that way. And if she would have killed then it would have basically would have thrown everything she said earlier in the book out. I do wonder if that was the reason she needed to not have her memories. A blank slate.

The fight at the end was great and really glad the thing broke because that would have just been too easy. And how the evil dragon reacted to her rider after his actions makes me think that things will turn around and things will with baby dragons and rainbows.

I enjoyed the story...I was very intrigued by the main character. Seeing her begin her journey and learn about the world she has stepped into was fun. I love dragons so it was fun to see the twist that the author gave. I especially enjoyed the ending. Such a nail biter!

I listened to the audiobook and I thought the narrator was mediocre at best. Her voice was very nasally and when she tried to portray male voices it was awful. I had to listen to it at a faster pace and I also noticed a few times that it would repeat a few words twice throughout the book. It would pull me away from the story. Sadly the team didn’t cut it correctly. Once I was able to listen to the narrator at a faster pace (2.0) I was able to listen to the story and enjoy.

Full of action and forbidden romance we watch as Sorcha finds a baby dragon and her world is turned upside down. Things that she thought about her life are not as they truly are. The world building and characters are great and the narrator does a wonderful job with the entire story.

I enjoyed the story a lot. The lead was a fun character and her journey in finding who she was and the world of dragons was a fun and amusing story.
If you like dragons and academy style books this is your read.
The narration was good, I liked that there was a male narrator for those parts that needed a guys voice it helped a lot. And the accents were fun!

An awesome adventure of magic and danger. And just like the title suggests: Dragons! What more could you want..of course for me- I need book two and the rest of the series asap. This reminded me that I need to dig around my pile of books for a liitle Anne Mccafferty Dragons of Pern books ♡ (=^-^=)
Sorcha is our heroine in this series. She is supposedly the Mother of all Dragons reincarnation. But to Sorcha that's still a debatable subject. Even with her memory loss. It seems that every turn she makes, she's making more enemies than friends. But with her dragon by her side, she feels she can do just about anything. But her biggest thought. Will she do what everyone is asking of her in the end?

MC inconsistent inner dialogue

Why would this writer input little porno thoughts in the main character? It didn't fit Sorcha. It might have been the thoughts of a teenage boy exposed to porn at an early age but not a 19 year old girl who couldn't even remember who she was. Was it done to try to make the story more relevant or to establish attraction between the characters? There are more well thought out less disgusting ways than to insert inexplicable stupidly executed porn thoughts. Read some other books by excellent writers that are not porn books. There were also a lot of spelling errors. The story idea was great.

Good first book

I really enjoyed the story and how all the dragon riders discover what kind of magic they have. The only thing that bothered me were all the typos. Like Embers dragon is introduced as Zakura but it changes to Sakura in the next chapter and back again later in the book. Adler becomes Alder, Fitz to Fritz. I know its little things but they distract me from the story.

I really hate to write this but this is one of the worst books I have ever read. None of the characters had any personality. The main character was so annoying all she went on about was how she wanted to have sex and how great she was supposed to be. Any problem in the book was instantly solved with very minimal resistance. Then the dragons where like spoiled brat people also. The only good thing was the narrator. She was so very good.

Great story but the writing could have been better. It is meant to be the point of view of a 19 year old, but reads like a 14-15 year old instead. There is randomly chucked in sex talk, which just doesn’t flow well with the way Sorcha tells the story. Plus she’s a virgin so it doesn’t really make sense. If the editing was better, it could have been a five star. I think I’ll start the second book and hope that the writing gets better but no promises I’ll finish it.

Dragon Riders Academy 1
This academy’s about to go up in flames.

I’m Sorcha McMurphy. I thought magic didn’t exist-- until I found a stolen dragon hatchling, and got a letter of acceptance to a supernatural school for dragon riders.

I’m literally flown away to a college that teaches sword fighting, magic casting, and general ass-kicking. Here, the dragon clans are at war and there’s an evil that threatens to destroy the riders forever.

They think I’m the chosen one destined to save the clans, but I’m no hero. If only I could stop myself from loving the cursed guy in my Dragon Keeping class long enough to save the world…

Total Score: 5/5

Summary:
Sorcha doesn’t remember who she is or her parents. All she knows is foster home where her foster parents treat her like a servant. She has been secretly been saving all she can to get into college until her world spirals out of control. First she finds a baby dragon then when her foster parents try to drag her back, she is eighteen years old, she learns she has a sister and a destiny to save the dragon riders. Sorcha finds her life turned upside down as she is enrolled in Dragon Academy where others are determined that she be what they expect, their savior. Now Sorcha has never fit into a mold and when she sees the school bad boy she can’t stop her self after she is told that she clan and his, the Shadow Riders, are enemies. As Sorcha is new to this world she doesn’t see things like the others placing herself in the middle of the conflict. Add to this the enemy is determined to kill her making Sorcha’s first year a school a wild and dangerous ride.

I enjoyed this story in audio-book format and loo forward to reading more of the Dragon Riders Academy series.

Okay, but struggled to connect *Spoiler warning*

I found the book difficult to connect with. I would’ve like more show and less telling me how the main character, Sorcha felt about things.

I liked the premise of the story, but there were some parts of the plot that were a little too convenient. There wasn’t any investigation into where to find the wand. They happened to run into someone who had an idea about where it could be. It just happened to be on an Island close to the school (even though it was explained later), in a cave no one was allowed to go in. Seriously? That cave would have had so many people in it - simply cause it was forbidden. Access to the cave was too easy. The wand would’ve been discovered a long time ago.

I didn’t ‘feel’ the relationship between Sorcha and Oliver. She barely had any interaction with him and she’s ready to sleep with him?

I also think using an online editor would’ve been beneficial. There’s a few proofreading errors.

Overall, I was disappointed. I liked the idea of the book, but would have preferred the manuscript had more polishing before it was published.

It's like every other fantasy romance you can get for free on kindle!
WARNING, POSSIBLE SPOILERS!!!!

So a "normal girl" lives in a "normal world". Her parents are dead. One day she found out there is magic, that she has magic. Suddenly she is in the "magical school". There she falls in love with a "bad boy". He told her that he is a very bad boy and that she has to stay away from him. Also, this school has a secret place where students are forbidden to go. Of course, our main character has to go there. Then there is also a school dance and our bad boy asks her to go with him. THEY KISS! Suddenly in the middle of the dance, something bad happens (the school is under attack). This bad boy is behind all this, of course. Something happens to her but the bad boy saves her so she can save everyone. She also found out her parents are alive. but not everything is over because there are also two other books.

I won't be reading the other two books because I think that I already know what is going to happen! As I said it's like every other fantasy romance you can get for free on Kindle.

If you put The Inheritance Cycle in Hogwarts, only with many more dragons and add a pinch of Romeo and Juliet, what you get is The Dragon Academy. I don't usually compare books, but in this case it is inevitable to do so.
This is the first book in the Dragon Riders Academy series, a series oriented to YA, very well written and set in the world of Draconia, specifically in the Draken Islands, in which four different clans inhabit the natural habitat of four different types of dragons: the mountain dragons of the Murphy clan, the water and ice dragons of the Teallach clan, the mystic forest dragons of the Cineal clan and finally the shadow dragons of the feared and hated Feara clan, the Shadow Clan.
With all this variety of dragons and their riders, it is not surprising that this book is so entertaining that you have to make a conscious effort to suspend your reading!
I could write more about the plot of The Dragon Academy, but you better read it if you want to know more and spend some very entertaining hours!

Spoilers and opinions abound:

Several scenes and instances in this book are lifted directly from Harry Potter and I'm not even 35% through:
Abusive/angry 'guardian figures' to a seemingly orphaned MC who's bed room is a small cramped room, secret prophecy + He who must not be spoken about villain, A shopping spree for 'First time students' because 'Your parents left you a lot of secret money to fund your life!', Dumbledore stand in gives a speech about how X area is off limits, They must wade into a pool to figure out where they will be placed for the rest of their stay at 'Hogwarts'... and all of this is before the 50% mark of the book...

The good news is the book isn't written by a flaming antisemitic terf so it's at least that much more enjoyable. Still chugging through it as I write this but man this is...not what I expected. :/

For a dragon riders book. It lacked in the whole riding and action thing. It was a good book for maybe starters. This book is the type of book that you give to someone if you want them to start off easy in the dragon reading books. Whiles there where adult language included, there plot was mostly the same as a scholastics book for children. Me being the dragon lover I am loved the book and the narration of how dragons are supposed to look, but as other thing that was basically the only thing that I liked. Probably would read the second and third book, but just to get to the end of the trilogy and not for the enjoyment.

Loved her the story she built until I cried.

This was a beautiful story for anyone that loves.. Love. It had kindness, empathy, selflessness, romance, laughter, and the supernatural! It's a book you will adore! Read it in a day. Absolutely beautiful. Already impatiently waiting for the next book to come out!! Can't wait! Looking to see what else this author has written as this was the first book ive read by her. She's a fantastic writer that builds characters you'll grow to love! Amazing! ❤️

Fall in luv with dragons all over again!!!!

I fell in luv with Sorcha and Toryn after the first time she saw him and decided to keep him. They are so perfect together. She is a rebel at heart and he'll do anything for her. I can't wait for the first time she rides him. If you don't already luv dragons, you will by the end of this book. And what's up with the hunky Oliver, is he in luv with Sorcha or not? He better make up his mind before she starts looking elsewhere. Highly recommended.

Not very original or swoon worthy

Basically a book created by using ideas from a bunch of current movies…avengers, harry potter, etc. Not one original idea that really stood out and made me think…wow this is unique! Fell flag

Male MC was not desirable at all - made me think of a preteen boy who was waaay to sensitive. Not worthy of being called a book boyfriend 😬

Female MC adjusted to everything too quickly…oh I have a sister? Cool. Chosen one? Cool. Walk through paintings to travel? Cool. I can heal? Cool. Etc —-

I was quite unsure if to give 2 or 3 stars. It's just not my cup of tea. I love books with dragons, but the start felt like very slow and then in the end felt everything so hectic and without much happening it ended. I as well didn't like the fact that adult dragons are able to be in buildings (like how big do the buildings have to be to be able to have multiple full grown dragons?) and that dragons go to manicure or on dates... That just felt completely off for me. I was thinking of not finishing it, but it had dragons, so i did. But i won't start the second book. 🤷‍♀️

I really enjoyed the world A.K. Thorne build in this book.
We're thrown right into the action and there weren't any chapters I was bored.
There were some small things, I'd done differently.. but the dragons were so adorable.♥

I'm really hoping we learn more about each character and their background in the next book.
I will definitely read the next one.
