"Lynn will never get to know his hysteria."In fact the woman of note, a much younger woman who worked for a NY publisher arranging a tour the main character is going on for his most recent book, is more like a piece of the scenery, a morsel.
"Every first time with a woman is the first time all over again. Wonder without memory. And later....
He is not in love. He is just pleased.Of course the main character is the author, or a very thinly veiled self-portrayal in a fictional character. How many times... And probably the funniest moment to me is that character quoting his mother:
"His mother, when he was already fifty-five, told him with a certain asperity: You shouldn't write so much about women, for you do not understand them."The reader can be assured that instead of writing about women, most of this book is about an aging author and the stream of consciousness going through his mind during one weekend in Montauk.
