They like their women barren in more ways than one, void of the bits that make them anything other than an object of male desire. A woman doesn’t need her faculties, or her body in one piece to open her legs.
Dark, brutal, and punishing - this is the world Dell was brought up in. Nothing more than a Lesser Fae female, owned by a master who sells her body to the highest bidder and takes what’s left for himself. She’s been through it all. She’s witnessed it all. She’s survived it all … so far.
Dell unwittingly binds herself to the Sun Gods - four primal, territorial High Fae males who have a taste for power, pain, and pleasure. But they want more from her than she initially expected.
They can read, control and govern her body. They can see through her lies, sense the secrets she’s been cowering from for years. For Dell, the only thing worse than trying to survive the darkness, is the prospect of being dragged back into the light.
This is book one in the four-part Spawn of Darkness series – 38,500 words written from Dell’s perspective. It features a strong, albeit mentally shattered female lead, and four protective High Fae Gods who will do everything in their power to protect her. It is a slow burn reverse harem romance with sensitive and taboo subjects, sex slavery, offensive language, explicit sexual content and violence; particularly as the series progresses. It contains content which some readers will find triggering. Intended for a mature audience aged eighteen years and over.
If I'd had to read about the heroine speaking to her vagina ONE MORE TIME, I'd have thrown this book off the nearest cliff.
It was basically as bad and cringeworthy as Ana speaking to her 'inner goddess' all the time in Fifty Shades. The heroine here, Dell, has a vagina which she is CONSTANTLY referencing - it pouts, and drools, and has feelings, it speaks to her, whatever. Not a single thing happened without her mentioning her vagina's reaction. I did a search, and the word 'vagina' appears about 100 times in a book that's only around 40,000 words long. THAT'S ONE MENTION OF 'VAGINA' EVERY 400 WORDS!!!! Which sounds like a lot, but as we readers know, 400 words is NOTHING. It's like half an A4 page.
Don't even get me started on how many times she spoke to her labia, too.
Also, this book has the sh*ttiest treatment of rape I've ever read about.
Before someone comes on here telling me I 'just don't understand it's a dark book' (as someone did when I reviewed a bully romance), allow me to inform you that I am VERY familiar with dark-content books. The point of dark-content in novels is that they're supposed to have an actual impact on the characters. E.g. in the Saving Setora series, the fact that women are slaves is something which actually has to be discussed and explored. In this world, Dell is a courtesan who's raped constantly by random men. Understandably, she actually tries to commit suicide. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS? She meets these four ultra-hot men, and she instantly forgets that anything remotely psychologically scarring EVER happened to her. The trauma in this book is used for shock factor, as a vehicle for her to meet the men, who instantly make her vagina start tingling.
I'm not talking about the fact that she likes rough sex; in fact, I seem to recall reading somewhere that some rape victims willingly engage in rape roleplays as a means of coming to grips with the assault. But here, there's not a single mention of the fact that she was literally suicidal - NO MENTION of what her mind might be like. You can't just have a heroine be raped every day of her life, try to kill herself, and then be totally fine with it because she met a bunch of men.
OTHER CRAP THINGS ABOUT THIS BOOK:
❌ Dell's character is wildly inconsistent. She's cowering when she first meets the guys, because she knows they're gods who can smite her. But then, five seconds later, she's swearing at them. It felt like a pathetic attempt to make her a 'feisty' heroine, like Willa from Curse of the Gods, when actually that's not Dell's personality at all.
❌ Speaking of Curse of the Gods... Dell ends up bound to a bunch of gods, because they end up with pieces of her soul. Just leaving this here.
❌ Zero difference between any of the heroes. It doesn't help that out of four of them, three of their names start with the same letter (Dawn, Dusk, Day, and Night). There was no discernible variation in personality, and barely in appearance.
❌ Things are poorly described - I also don't know what Dell looks like.
I saw this book being highly recommended on some RH Facebook groups I'm in, so I'm disappointed to have to give a negative review yet again, but I can't stand to read another page of this book.
What an emotional ride. I believe part of me got destroyed a bit on the journey.
Fast journey it was. A Token's Worth is less than 200 pages of brutality, cruelty, and utter darkness, only briefly lightened by the Sun Gods.
Dell just goes through too much. Born in a society where women are considered less than cattle, she has been raised and used as a whore since childhood. Her uterus was taken from her, her body stolen for a token and her mind destroyed by the hands of monsters. Dell is broken, inside and outside.
After one too many gang bang sessions, she has enough. She goes to the cliff to jump but her objective is cut short by the appearance of four High Fae, the Sun Gods: Day, Night, Dawn, and Dusk. She bonded them to her by mistake and they all owe her a wish.
Dell is the real sole character of the book, the Gods only tools for her story to start. She is a mess, she constantly converses with her vagina -to an annoying level-, swears a lot, and rambles like crazy. She is a darker version of Willa Knight where A Token's Worth is a much darker version of The Curse of the Gods. The similarities are many, but it does not take the pleasure out.
And I undeniably loved the book. I may not have entirely appreciated it during my read but in the end, I adored it.
With all of Dell's hardships, the book is pretty vanilla and doesn't really deal with the trauma, the shame, the hatred, and pretty much any negative emotion. It is very surprising to have her talk and function almost like a normal being. But I found this portrayal very fitting: a mix of anger, fake bravado, acceptance, denial, and a complete dissociation from her vagina, and in total opposition with the Gods views. Dell comes from a world where abuse towards women is normal and she never knew anything else while the Sun Gods are revolted.
But let's be clear about it, this book is not about rape culture, romanticized rape, or a way to devalue the trauma.
I cannot wait to see what the second book has in store for me.
> No MM > No FF
Trigger Warning: A massive amount. Rape, gang rape, trauma, abuse, whipping, pain, … and I am probably forgetting some. It might also shock people how rape is portrayed and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone that thinks they could be shocked and/or offended.
Sooooo I really enjoyed this but it is DARK and the MC talks about her vagina in the third person A LOT!!! It’s basically another character. in saying that I really enjoyed the writing, I loved the character , I fell DEEEEEEP into this world and desperately want longer books to flesh out this narrative in a much more in depth manner.
*****warning WARNING triggering content may upset some people !!!!!********
Let's be clear about it, this book is not about rape culture, romanticised rape or a way to devalue the trauma. So the MC (Dell) is a sex slave and has been gang raped and the first scene is a gang rape. ....
So after that the Dell magically mutters phrase that changes her whole life, and the author never explains how dell knows what to say and when to say it. sooo four gods turn up and chaos Commences. Alpha alpha angels *drool drips down my chin* whoops sorry. Yep. Angels.... powerful deadly bully godly amazing angels....
this is about trauma, disassociation from ones body, our main character is broken inside and out but its a beautiful picture of destruction, done to us and done to ourselves
picture I’m left with is that dell knows a LOT more than she is letting on, which is confirmed later in the series.
This is S.A.Parkers first book published and in the series and for the love of all things holy woman you have got me hook line and sinker! and oh boy what a start! I feel a little dirty, a little turned on.. I cried with laughter I held my breath and now.. I might want to kidnap the author to get my next hit!
I guarantee you will find yourself enthralled in this book and if not the book the characters!
But let's not pretend there is anything gentle about this book except for its name.. ATW is delicate enough that it walks a dark twisted line filled with WTF moments that will have you laughing until it hurts..
So hold on to your panties!!.. if you wear them..
If you like dark, twisted and sexy.. ATW will blow you… away ;)
Dell is a beautifully tortured, sexy and sarcastic Lesser Fae MC who you will fall in absolute awe of her strength and foul-mouthed comebacks..
The Guys of ATW are cocky! more than little arrogant! And so sexy it's like staring into the sun itself.. they are 4 High Fae Males after all.. Dell finds herself tied to these Males and she would like that in more ways than one!.. The ties that bind these characters is where the story really begins.. and it won’t be a gentle ride… not that dell would expect anything less.. she knows what it's like to live in a savage unforgiving world.. but with pain comes change it either makes you! or breaks you! what path will our MC take..
So strap in, strap up and strap on if you must.. and welcome to the shit show..
Please be warned.. *this book may contain Triggers for some but please just take a chance as it is so well balanced you will find that through the pain there is a badass sassy mouthed horn dog who has learned she is no ones bitch!
Side note for S.A.Parker Congrats on being a F##king writing ninja!! Just popping up and bam taking me by surprise i can’t wait to see what your future books have install for us all! x
Dell’s life is not an easy one. The life of a courtesan is not one she would’ve chosen for herself, but one she was dealt. She makes it through with a little help from her crude humor and her wayward vagina. One day, in an unexpected turn of events, her life is bound to the Sun Gods. The Gods of Dawn, Day, Dusk, and Night are steamy and sexy as all get out (seriously, can’t get enough of them) and intrigued by this lesser Fae female.
This book had me laughing out loud in public places, getting crazy looks from all sorts of people and I cared not. It is incredibly well written, sucking you in and spitting you out, leaving you wanting more - as all good books do. I have a feeling that I will never have enough of Dell and her 4 Sun Gods, but I’m greedy like that.
Seriously, do yourself a favor. Buy the book. Read the book. Tell everyone about the book. You won’t regret it.
Absolutely loved this book. It took me a little while to get used to the perspective that Dell gave to everything, and her thought patterns, but after the first few chapters I was completely hooked! You can see hints of where the series is going to go, you get attached to the characters and I honestly can’t wait to read more of Dells inner dialogue!
There’s quite a few reason I won’t be reading this series...the best explanation is found in this review. Pay special attention to the comments and put the pieces together...
Secondly...hero’s cheat in the second book...don’t care the reason or the situation. It’s an auto no-go for me!!
Well hot dang! This story is probably one of the best dark, RH urban fantasy reads that I have had the pleasure of reading in forever.
The FMC is a girl named Del and she is a lesser Fae in a world were women are below roaches. As you can only image, what she goes through is savage and brutal but there is a sunny side. She accidentally ties herself to four delicious Sun God's. The story from there is amazing; the characters development is really well written and I have laughed out loud so much with Del's inner monologue and that of her vagina, yes I said vagina👌.
You will need a spare change of panties for this books my friends because not only will you be laughing so hard you may pee yourself, but the steamy scenes between Dell and her gods are divine (get it 😉). You will love this series with everything you've got and be left craving for the next book. So have no thoughts about what this book will be like because I can guarantee that you are not prepared for this story or the awesomeness that is Dell.
There are some authors that were just made to be authors - they have it, and Sarah is that kind of author. So read it and love it peeps!
Welcome Sarah Parker in her debut series. I absolutely love, love, love this book! It is book 1 of a series and holy shit it’s a crazy ride. Dell lives in a world were women have no value but merely exist for men’s pleasure and play toys and for only the price of a token. The life she lives day to day makes you wonder why she even would want to wake up after she falls asleep. She at some point reaches that feeling but for some reason couldn’t end it until she finds the words to bring four gods (that are HOT AF) appear demanding she seals the deal. Dell is shown that the cruel life she has lived is not all there is but at what price? and at what price of others? This book will test your boundaries, make you fall in love with the MC, because she’s Sassy AF and a badass, plus she is hilarious. You will even have hard time deciding which God is going to be your new book boyfriend( but you won’t be able to not want one of these men!) hell you may build you new harem with all of them. Sol is mine ladies, find your own! Come and join Dell in her life full of some epic fuckery😘
At four years old dell is covered in her mums blood wandering the streets only to be found by kroe who keeps her beats her and rapes her while selling her body to any man willing to pay for it. All shes known since is whoring and that she has no choice no ones going to step into save her or any of the other women. When shes had more than she can take she goes to the cliff to end her misery. Until she finds herself saying words in a language she didnt know excisted and winds up calling the 4 high fae gods day dawn dusk and night who give her wishes and in exchange they get a power boost.. this story is brutally violent for women the men are in charge and can do no wrong. Dell is a strong female lead who has u wanting her to survive, to beat those who hurt her and destroy king sterling and change the way women are treated but what can one mortal woman really do when she has no power...
This was my first time dipping my pinky toe into the whole "dark" subgenre of RH. I didn't know if it was going to be too much for me, if I could handle it, or if it would straight up scare the bejizzles out of me and make me run and hide.
Happy to report that after the first chapter, I straight up canon balled into this bitch.
IT. IS. SO. GOOD!
I loved the world building, character building, the inner vagina conversations (like, whoa don't get me started on THAT hilarity!) I loved it all. Except that it ended and I couldn't read more of the story.
This is the kind of story that doesn't have you reading the first half of the book to build up the character history or the world around them. It doesn't hold your hand and guide you through the inner workings of the characters lives.
It shoves you into their lives from the beginning. I don't like being pushed, I mean, who does? But in this case..push me again S.A. Parker! Push me agaaaaaaaaaaaaaain!
Now with saying that, I also need you to know that you're not going to be thrown into their lives with a whole "what the eff is going on? I don't know what's going on!" the author does a phenomenal job of giving you just the right amount of background information without drowning you in it.
Freaking high five to her because it's not easy to do that! From my reading experience anyway!
SO! If you are 1) new to the whole "dark" subgenre of RH (or any main genre), give this a try. PLEASE! 2) if you want to laugh and squirm in delight, give this a try. PLEASE! 3) ....just freaking read this okay?
Meeting four extremely hot gods who will each grant you a wish should be a dream come true for most, but not for Dell. She has had a lot of horrible things thrown at her throughout her entire life. A lesser fae and a female, Dell is used for sport by all the male fae. No one will help her even if she is being attacked on the street. So when she meets these four gods, she doesn’t trust them. But Dell is broken and hurt, and they notice this. They do not judge her scars, but find themselves caring for her. And Dell needs protection. She needs these four to help mend her, and hopefully, they can restore her trust. I am so excited for book 2 in this series! A Token's Worth set up the world, characters and story nicely, but that ending was absolutely heartbreaking. I need to know what is going to happen next! I can’t wait!
A tokens worth by s.a Parker.this book is harsh dark and brutal .... in the best kind of way! This is an amazing story about a girl named dell who lives in a world well not to spoil it but lives in a horrible harsh dark and brutal world ... when I first started this I was like alright this girl is no joke but didn’t know how I felt about the book yet then the story went on and wow the story line isn’t something I expected the men well I can’t wait to see what happens there and dell she is tough funny strong a little ... maybe a lot broken but I feel that it doesn’t totally bring her down and won’t in future books (from this cliffhanger I’m assuming there will be book 2 ... hopefully soon!!)) but this was a great read looking toward to more from this author !!
Um.... so how the F-bomb did I manage to forget I've already read this beauty? I honestly have no clue! But I picked it up a few days ago, thinking I hadn't read it before and boom it all came rushing back to me.
One of the things I really love about this book the prologue that informs of how harsh, dark and rich on triggers - this story is. Let me just say; that should not be taken lightly. There's rape, abuse, beatings, whippings (nope, not the fun ones), degrading, half-arsed operations..... basically, Dell lives a life of nightmares.
But, but, butttt!! The author executes it all beautifully. There's so much humour going on, thanks to Dell's inner musings and discussions with her vagina.
The blurb alone reeled me in but I had no idea how much I’d love this book! It was the perfect combination of witty and serious. The author somehow managed to make me laugh out loud even while feeling bad about what Dell has been through in her life. I think anyone who enjoyed the Hijinks Harem series will greatly appreciate Dell’s inner monologue. Its hilarious. The book has got some dark aspects to it (nothing too crazy) so if that isn’t something you enjoy then this book may not be for you. But if you are like me and enjoy that kind of thing...READ IT!! I hope you fall in love with Dell’s moody guys just as much as I did!
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I read the prologue. I honestly thought it would be too much for me as I am not a fan of dub-con or non-con. But I liked Dell... wanted to love her but also she irritated me at points. The writing style was on point and the world building g was...different. It was like the 1600’s weird oppressive universe with millennial language and phrasing. Not bad... just different. Will be interesting to see where the author take this. Lots of mystery surrounding Dell not to mention the stunting of the sun god powers by the evil king...
This is a book that draws you in from the first paragraph. Set in a world like no other and a storyline that leaves you wanting more immediately. Dell is fiesty, unapologetic and completely chaotic in her own mind with the humour she uses in her internal monologue makes the dark and sometimes brutal aspects of the book easier to digest if you are not into dark romance. Absolutely fantastic read, looking forward to the rest of the series.
What a fantastic start to hot series. Loved the story building and the characters are so interesting and entertaining that I couldn't put the book down. Loving where this story goes and so look forward to the next book. If you want a fun and hot book, this is for you!
I wish I could give this more stars. Absolutely loved this book...great story and characters. The FMC has the best inner dialogue I have ever read....laughed out loud more than one even though this is definitely not a comedy. Cant wait for book two.
This was a dark read, but not nearly as dark as some and far from morbid. It borders on sadistic, but with none of those labels attributed to the main male characters, though Dell, our FMC, May mentally dub at least 2 of the quad as such. It’s the other men in her life, the ones that have control and use it, that earn that title.... and when the world becomes a little clearer, the circumstances in which they’ve earned it are horrific.
Update:
When I first read this book, I wrote a review that left much to be desired - as at the time I wasn't really sure if I liked the series. Now, looking back from the perspective of a finished series and a reread, I have to confess that I rather liked this series a lot - perhaps even loved it. It's uncomfortable though - almost every dang bit of it, and I am not ashamed to say I cried more than once. This first book is one of the more difficult offerings, as you don't have a firm grasp on who Dell is, or who the Sun God's are to her - yet. That will come. Take a deep breath, and give it a shot.
Please be aware there IS RAPE IN THIS BOOK! In fact, the opening scene features a group of men raping Dell... though the construct is utilized not as a way to glorify rape, but as a vessel to showcase how mundane and fucking normal such an event is on this twisted and screwed up world. None of the main male characters rape, or even allude to, raping her, so there is that... not that it makes it any better. Just be aware of what you are getting into before you dive in.
Pros: ~Dell is amusing. ~There is something compelling about the narrative, a feeling that you have to keep reading, even if you don’t want to. ~No major transition issues.
Cons: ~FMC rambles..... and it’s not pretty. ~Dell’s lady bits basically talk.... a lot. Her vagina deserves her own name and character profile for the number of times she took over the narrative and tried to influence Dell. ~World building is sorely lacking. ~Still have no clue what is really going on. ~Too short.
Perspective: First Person, Single POV
Ending Type: Cliffhanger
Rating: NC-17 (
18+ only
)
Romantic Dynamic: MMMMF - slow burn
My Final Verdict on A Token's Worth When I first reviewed this book, I had only read it once and the series was still stewing to completion. Now, I have been blessed with Dell's full story, and I know how it ends... and I honestly encourage you to give this tale a shot. It deserves every trigger warning imaginable and a whole host of cringes, but it's a worth while dive
Really enjoyed the world the author created. My one complaint is that we didn't get more. It's going to be torture waiting for the series to be complete. If you like dominant males and a snarky female I recommend this book.
Ok, where to start. First, this book is fantastic and if I could give it more than 5 stars I would.
This book is about Dell who is a cortesane who has had enough. She's tired of living in a world where girls are just subjected to men's whims. She unexpectedly summons the four sun gods. But can she trust these men when she is so use to trusting no one. Are these gods even worth trusting?
I absolutely loved this book. It has a great FC who is fed up and loves to speak her mind, but is also prone to mind rambles and love to talk to her girl. You know which one I'm talking about. Then there are the sun gods, be ready to add some new book boyfriends, because your going to love them. This book is freaking hilarious and will have you laughing so be prepared to be looked at weird while reading this in public.
This book doesn't have any sex scenes but it has some steamy scenes between Dell and her sun gods. Even without sex scenses still a fantastic book.
The author killed it with this first book. Would definitely recommend you to read it, like now. Book 2 can come soon enough
I was given this book as an ARC for an honest review, this is it.
When I first read the blurb, I was like "Oo. interresting!." Now I have, and oh my! This MC fits my humor perfectly, oh my. Ive laughed so many times, I LOVE her inner monolog, and her persona! The the silly things she does and says, its like someone has watched me, because, I do that too.
Then, the story. Well, can I just say I can't wait for book two, because I want more of this world. It's a cruel world, but its different, its raw, and I want to see more. Its dark, her past and curent happening is dark, but I dont find it too dark. I see that the MC grows over time, I like that the MC's story dosent focus too much on 'pore me', but rather 'poor me, but what ever, sunshine and bullets, i'm out of my mind.' kind a way, and that fits this story! Its well written, all creds to the author!
Allow yourselves a couple of hours of uninterrupted bliss when you start reading this character driven, gritty, sensual, hilarious, brutal, hot read ... because you're not going to want to put it down! Be prepared for a roller coaster of emotions as you accompany Dell on her journey of survival in a world where women are scum and men rule - Dell's scars, external and emotional a testament to the barbaric world she lives in. Her relationship with each of the Sun Gods builds alluringly, their characters drawn out deliciously with the turning of each page, leaving the reader wanting more ... a perfectly executed slow burn with elements of pure heat thrown in for good measure! This for a debut? Wow! Wow! Wow! I can't wait for book two of this four part series!
2.5* Giving this book 3 stars is a little bit of a stretch.
Pros: the guys. Holy hell, I wanna take them for a spin and change their religion.
I enjoyed the story and bow dark it was. Ove definately read darker but this was just the perfect balance.
Cons: For God's sake, the MFC "Del" rambles! The inner monologue annoyed the crap out of me.
She also refers and talks to her vagina way too much that it honestly is a separate character. "My vagina does this" "my vagina is purring" "shut your labia, vagina!"
In fact, I searched how often the word "Vagina" is written in this book and the result was 92 times in 134 pages. This is not including the other names she calls it.
This has got to be one of the worst books I have ever read. This girl takes vagina monologues quite literally! And doesn’t shut up about it, every single page she is talking to it and its “talking” back.
The fact that I couldn’t follow her thought pattern and didn’t know what the hell is going on most of the time didn’t help my cause. I couldn’t even tell the guys apart or what their deal is, it sort of, kinda felt like they have a thing for her or they are just happy she is a first person to make a wish in a million years so they are kinda grateful or stuck with her. I didn’t get any love vibes from either side nor any sexual tension at all. Except for her hoo-ha that just seems to get excited with any manhood in its vicinity.
