A madcap modern marriage of convenience tale sure to leave fans begging for more
Maybe there hasn't been actual blood, other than a few paper cuts, but Myles has put plenty of sweat into his independent, local newspaper, and he's even willing to admit to a few manly tears. Certainly, the paper has been his mistress since he moved to the small town of Wishful, Mississippi, and he doesn't feel it's hyperbolic in the least to say it owns a piece of his soul. He's building his dream, independent of the life laid out for him by his family, and that means everything. There's nothing he wouldn't do to ensure its success.
Piper fell hard for Myles when they co-stared in the production of White Christmas that saved Wishful's historic Madrigal Theater. Not in love, she's careful to remind herself, but into very serious like, and certainly outrageous, chemistry-fueled attraction. But Piper knows that the bright lights of the stage can wreak havoc with perspective. She's been burnt by them before, when an on-stage passion fizzled into disappointment and heartache. That's why she put on the brakes with Myles, and she admits to herself that the fact that he played by her rules and waited only adds to his appeal.
When Myles tells her that a major investor is pulling out of the paper, leaving him with a huge loan to repay or lose his control over what he's built, Piper is devastated for him. But when he jokingly admits that the best option he's come up with is to marry a showgirl to gain access to a trust fund, well, that just sounds like a plan to Piper. After all, why not take this great guy on marriage test drive? He's worth having just for this moment, however long it lasts. But as their fake marriage turns alarmingly real, they'll have to decide if they're in it for the moment or forever.
Welcome to Wishful, Mississippi, a small town with big hearts, where folks come together to make their dreams come true. We first met Myles and Piper when they auditioned for White Christmas in BE CAREFUL, IT'S MY HEART, when another of Piper's zany schemes helped bring her friends Tyler and Brody together. We followed their story in ONCE UPON A SETUP, a Wishful Meet-Cute Romance, which tells the story behind Piper's cooling off period. But if you haven't read either of those, don't worry about jumping in here. Every Wishful story can stand on its own, just like the sassy women of this charming, southern town.
Q: What makes the Wishful series special?
Wishful is a collection of southern romance novels honoring my Mississippi roots. When I started the series, I set out to highlight everything that I love about living in the small town South--all our quirks, foibles, and dreams provide a fabulous (and often funny) backdrop to contemporary romances about stubborn, independent women and the men who love them.
Q: Who would dig these books?
Wishful is a southern romance series written for anyone looking for love in a small town. If you loved Hart of Dixie and miss the residents of Bluebell, you just might fall in love with Wishful. It's a town where everybody knows your name and hope springs eternal! Many of my readers also enjoy the books of Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Kristan Higgins, Melanie Shawn, Ava Miles, and Jill Shalvis.
Q: What order should I read the books in?
This southern romance series has been written so that each story is a standalone that wraps up with a happily ever after by The End. That said, if you want to read them in chronological order I suggest this:
* To Get Me To You (Cam and Norah) * Be Careful, It's My Heart (Brody and Tyler) * Know Me Well (Liam and Riley) * Just For This Moment (Myles and Piper)
Kait Nolan is a RITA® Award-winning Mississippi author who calls everyone sugar, honey, or darlin', and can wield a 'Bless your heart' like a Snuggie or a saber, depending on requirements. She believes in love, laughter, and that tacos are the world's most perfect food. When she's not writing, reading, working the evil day job, or wrangling family (both the two-legged and the four-), you can find her obsessively watching The Great British Bake Off.
Just For This Moment by Kait Nolan is the fourth book of the contemporary romance Wishful series. I haven't read the rest of this series myself but as with most romance series the characters seem to change from book to book so this read fine as a standalone. This story is one of those agree to a fake relationship and it turns into more stories. Myles needs money to save his paper and his way to do that is to unlock and inheritance by getting married. Piper and Myles had an attraction to them and wanted to date but when Piper hears of the situation she offers to marry Myles to help him out. I usually like the fake dating/marriage set ups and this one wasn't any different, it helped too that they knew one another but just skipped a few steps in the relationship. Not too bad of a story overall.
This might be the best one yet. My only quibble was the end conflict coming from eavesdropping and jumping to conclusions again. It would be nice if these characters would just communicate. Honestly it felt out of character since Piper is so direct for the rest of the book.
You've just got to love 2 black sheep, friends at first, fellow actors in community theater, then pretend husband and wife, who unexpectedly fall in love after marrying. What can I say? Piper thought that she was helping Myles out of a financial strait by marrying him in order to comply with the stipulations of his trust fund. The investor who helped him buy and kick-start a small-town newspaper decides to cancel his contract and demand the return of his investment, so Piper decides to help Myles get his money, to replace what his investor had put in. While Myles is working day and night to make a success of his newspaper, Piper is working in a medical clinic, surrounded by epidemics and emergencies. Can a business deal turn into the real thing--a lasting, loving marriage? Be surprised. Read Just For This Moment.
No surprise that this earns five stars from me. Wishful is one of my favorite fictional places. Piper has long been one of my favorite Wishful characters. I'm thrilled to see her finally get a story all her own. Ms. Nolan has found a man worthy of her. Myles is funny and adorable. But he does have a slight problem with workaholism. I hope it doesn't cost him eternal happiness. This wasn't the story I was expecting, but I loved every minute of it. I mean arranged marriages in the 21st Century? Oh, you've never seen an arranged marriage like this. And only Nolan could make something so simple explode so spectacularly. One little nitpicky thing. I'm a little irritated that the characters always run or hide out when they get news they can't stomach. How about a different reaction? I especially expected more of Piper, who's always so strong and independent. But she doesn't hide from the problem for long. It was especially fun to read the novella "Wish I Might" on the backside of completing the full-length novel. I could travel to Wishful every day of the week. I think I might want to move there. If you've never visited Wishful, the first novel in the series is free. Get it. Read it. You won't be sorry. In fact, you'll be hungry to read this novel (and the ones yet to be written).
This is Book 4 in a series of contemporary romance novels that remind me of the Harlequin novels that used to be called "Harlequin American" and these days are called "Harlequin Heartwarming." Per Harlequin guidelines, these are novels in which "romance, family and community are strong features of these stories." This series is set in an imaginary small town called Wishful, Mississippi. Because this series is light drama with touches of humor, small town life is presented in a very positive light. The link between the books are continuing characters and the town itself. However, the books can be read independently of each other. I myself read this particular book without having read any others in the series, and I had no problem following the story.
I learned from the backstory presented in this book that the two protagonists, Piper Parish, age 29, and Myles Stewart, age 31, appear in a previous book in which they fall hard for each other when they co-star in a community theater production of White Christmas, the classic 1954 musical comedy movie starring Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney. Myles plays Bob (Bing's part), and Piper plays Betty (Rosemary's part). Having mistaken real romance for the fake romance of a play in the past, Piper informs Myles that she has a firm rule that she will not date her leading man ever again until at least three months have passed after the close of the play. This will, theoretically, allow fakery to fade away sufficiently to allow her to make a clear-eyed assessment if any attraction worth exploring remains. (Note: According to the blurb of this book, Myles and Piper are in the play White Christmas in BE CAREFUL, IT'S MY HEART, and Piper also appears in ONCE UPON A SETUP.)
Piper's day job is at a local doctor's office as a nurse. Myles has a master's degree from prestigious Columbia University in New York, and had been living up north in New York City until about a year ago, when two things brought him home. He missed small town life in his hometown, Wishful, and he had a chance to fulfill a major life ambition, buying the local newspaper and becoming the editor-in-chief. He invested all his savings, but the purchase ultimately was only possible because of a crucial loan from of a mysterious, anonymous investor.
Myles has been counting off the days until he can finally date Piper, and his attraction has only grown. The fact that he has been willing to patiently wait for Piper, and not date anyone else in the meantime, has definitely increased his real-world appeal to her. During those three months they have seen each other in group settings, especially doing karaoke performances together at the local bar, and they have also been texting each other. So they've had a chance to develop a friendship. As the book starts the three months are just now up and Myles is ready and eager to ask Piper out and move from platonic friend to romantic partner. Their dating life gets off to a very promising start until Miles suddenly develops overwhelming financial problems.
The lawyer representing his unnamed investor notifies Myles that the investor is calling in the loan because the investor has lost faith in Myles's ability to bring the paper out of the red. If Myles doesn't repay the loan in full within 45 days, the investor will take over ownership of the paper. Myles has no desire to humuliate himself by asking his wealthy parents or his even more wealthy paternal grandmother for money, because they don't support his dream, and he is positive they will turn him down. He jokingly tells Piper that the only hope for him is to head to Las Vegas and bribe a showgirl to marry him. This would allow him to access a trust fund set up for him by his deceased paternal grandfather, which can only happen if he gets married. Piper surprises him by taking him seriously and volunteering to participate in a marriage of convenience, for which she says she would insist on signing an ironclad prenuptual agreement, and promises that they can get divorced down the road, no muss, no fuss.
Piper's plan is that after a quickie, courthouse marriage, they would carry on dating, because they both think they have potential as a relationship for the long haul. But they would tell no one about the marriage and not live together, because that would endanger the natural development of their romance by rushing it. Unfortunately for them, on the day that they get married, a friend of Myles's grandmother spies them coming out of the courthouse of a neighboring town. She figures out they just got married, reports it to his grandmother, and the proverbial fat hits the fire. The secret, fake marriage must now appear real, requiring the acting job of both their lives, as they fake marital bliss to their families and the entire, gossipy town.
I've been a big fan of White Christmas and have watched it as a family ritual every year for decades. Therefore, I personally found it fun that this story echoes the romantic conflict of that 1950's movie. In addition, Piper's mother often sounds like a stock character from other typical 1950's movies, with her maternal advice to Piper that she should keep her home a haven for Myles as her husband and not bother him with her petty, female problems. Myles's grandmother is also a classic Southern matriarch right out of an old movie.
I liked the theme that both Myles and Piper see themselves as outsiders in their own family who are not like everyone else. The idea of "us against the world" is an ever-green staple of romantic comedy.
In terms of graphic content, this too is similar to Harlequin Heartwarming. There is no coarse language, and the sex is very limited and only happens after they are legally married. The sex is tender rather than lusty, and it's not at all graphic. There is a lot of drinking and some drunkenness.
Read the ARC copy and found this book to be a delight. The characters are so likable and fun. The story line isn't all flowers and fluff, there are doubts that Piper has that so many females feel in relationships. In my own personal opinion, this story hit some honest key points in relationships that many go through. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
This. THIS BOOK! This is hands-down my favorite Wishful so far. Perhaps even my favorite Kait Nolan. I admit that I’m somewhat leery of fake relationship/marriage tropes – because sometimes by the end I still don’t understand how the forced pair are together.
The great thing about Just for This Moment is that Myles & Piper were already halfway there. The tension comes from trying to keep secrets from family and friends and wondering whether they ruined their chances with the ruse. Planning a wedding last minute brings its own hilarious, aggravating, and romantic scenes.
Another one of my favorite things about Nolan’s writing is that while she often includes “the big misunderstanding” – she doesn’t painfully (for the reader) drag it out. I cried right along with Piper but was quickly comforted when Myles worked to set things right. There’s another big surprise, but I won’t ruin it – or it wouldn’t be a surprise.
The epilogue was precious and so relatable. I’m ready for Reed & Cicely’s book, Wish I Might.
Amy McFadden continues giving an expanding townsfolk their own unique voices, while keeping old favorites consistent from previous books.
I loved this book, it’s so much fun. Loved how perfect Myles and Piper were for each other. Loved the concept, get married and then date. She’s doing him a favor, but is she falling for him? Loved their wedding and how he surprised her. There’s some misunderstanding, and I felt heartbroken for them. But thankfully he figures it out and they have a very happy ever after. I’ve loved each book in this series and I highly recommend this book.
Audio - Narrated by Amy McFadden I throughly enjoyed this one. Groom had a flash mob sing for his bride to walk down the aisle. Marriage of convenience with a twist. I love Wishful Mississippi.
This is the 1st book I read by Kait Nolan. I know this book had good reviews. I'm sorry I stopped reading this story at chapter 3 because this story didn't grab my interest.
Loved it! Kait Nolan writes with such emotion! Piper and Myles' story is a fast-paced, roller-coaster filled with wacky families, hard-working caring people, and all kinds of love. A terrific read!
I just love this Wishful series. I have to confess that I have not read them in order, but that has not been a problem. Myles Stewart fell for Piper Parish in a previous book when they were in the play White Christmas together. Piper had a rule that she wouldn’t date someone she was in a play with for 90 days after the end of the play. She figured if she was still crazy about the guy, and he waited on her, then they had a chance fora relationship. Ninety days are up and Myles asks Piper out. Miles bought the local paper against his father’s wishes. Miles had an investor to help with the money and now the investor wants out and his money in 90 days. The only way he can get the money is to marry and get money from his trust fund. Miles tells Piper about this one night and she suggests the two of them get married so he can get the money. The craziness begins, but it is always crazy fun around Piper!
I so enjoyed this book. Piper’s nephew Preston was a sweetheart and funny. Both Piper and Miles had quirky families that caused trouble. I strongly encourage you to read the book.
You know what? I don'tknow if I laughed with this one (I probably did, and I sure I smiled a lot) and there were a few mistakes... But I sure as hell couldn't stop reading because I lost track of time and when I thought about it, it was 6 a.m.!!!! Yeah, 6 a.m.! (thank God I didn't have nothing important to do today, just stay at home) And at that point I made myself stop reading and go to sleep, but guess what, as soon as I woke up I came back to book.
Oh, even though I can't recall if I laughed or not I do recall crying! This is the kind of book where you disappear into. The kind of book you wish you knew the characters and could be friends with them. (and give them advice!!! Yes, Piper, I'm mostly talking to you!)
Now, Kait, thank you so much for their story and thank you for dedicating this book to the "black sheeps". Oh, you can consider yourself one of my favourite writers! See you on the next book :) I sure it won't take too long ;)
I get some serious Pitch Perfect vibes out of this with the amazing list of musical references, the girl-power solidarity, and the underdog who gets his girl. I’ve come at this book from both ends of the series; I’ve read the books before this and I’ve read most of the books after this, so it was about time I filled in this missing chapter in my Wishful education. I can’t say I can understand where Piper and Myles are coming from, fighting to be seen as their uniquely black sheep selves. I’m more like Leah in the ‘fighting back comments to remain liked’ outlook. However, I loved watching this pair learn how to love one another. They made me laugh, the made me cry, they made me want to shake some sense into them, and they made me love.
I wanted to like this early on so much more than I actually did in the end. It's a much more plausible fake/quickie marriage setup than I'm used to seeing in my romance novels, and I do appreciate a good setup. I'm even on board with the external obstacles thrown in their way, forcing their plan to adapt in ways neither of them anticipated.
It's the internal conflicts that piss me off. A character misunderstanding something they overheard eavesdropping, whether intentional or not, is just such a lazy way to introduce conflict. I don't like it in other romance novels where I've encountered it, and I don't like it here. To the book's credit, the character does get called on it--when Piper goes to Tucker to hide out in her confusion and upset, Tucker insists she talk to Myles about it. Which is something, at least. But it's still lazy. And having that bundled together with an unexpected pregnancy, another tired trope that isn't usually handled well, this really was a let down. Again, it's not quite as bad as it could be--since the marriage was such a rush job, it's understandable that they wouldn't have talked about their desire for or timeline regarding kids, and the birth control thing was just an accident--those do happen. But it leads to an epilogue that's very "a kid fixes everything" in its attitude, because the best thing to happen to a rushed relationship and marriage is adding a kid to the mix? No, no, I don't buy it.
So the first 60% of the book, leading up to the wedding itself and events immediately following it, is fantastic, the exact fun and "madcap" romantic romp the blurb promises. That part of the book is five stars. Then the remaining 40% is a mess and a downer--I accept that there are consequences to rushing a marriage like that, even with someone you think you can make it successful with, but it's just smashed together out of lazy tropes and ends happily with very little reason to.
I loved, loved this small town marriage of convenience romance. It was a heartwarming, swoony, and spicy story as seen through the eyes of two intense, strong and passionate characters. Myles is the newish owner of the newspaper in small town Wishful and a newcomer to town. Piper is a hometown girl and a nurse. They met when they both got leads in the play to save the local theater. Despite sparks instantly flying between them, Piper has a no dating costars rule with a 90 day cooling off period. Just when they’re finally free to start dating, Miles ends up in a financial pickle that has Piper suggesting a marriage of convenience to give him access to his trust. Quickie courthouse wedding to satisfy his family and the trust and then they’d just “date” in Wishful so no one would be the wiser. Of course, things get complicated fast, feelings rarely stay crammed in the box you’ve shoved them into, and marriage takes effort and communication. What follows the decision to get married is a wonderful journey of baggage unpacking, miscommunication, leaps of faith, and life course correction. The story was well written and included engaging dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, and a captivating storyline and will give you all the feels along the way - laughing, crying, swooning, cringing, teeth gritting, eye rolling, and cheering. I cannot wait to read more this series. 4.5 stars.
This was the 4th book in this series, but can be read as a standalone. The author does a good job of incorporating the characters so it is very easy to follow.
This is the story of Myles and Piper. They are both the black sheep of their families and developed an instant attraction to each other during a theatre performance. Piper enacts a three month waiting period after the production before she will date Myles. She wants to make sure their attraction is real and not due to the excitement of the show.
Myles owns/runs the local newspaper. He has something to prove to his family and needs to be successful. Now his investor is changing the game and he needs money to buy them out. The only way...get married fast so he can claim his inheritance. You can imagine what happens from here, but there are some little twists.
This story is funny, romantic and sweet. I loved these two and as a couple they are great. Their relationship builds fast, but grows naturally. I really enjoyed it...all the way through the epilogue. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
4 MyPie Stars!!!! This is book 4 of the Wishful series. In typical Kait Nolan fashion her characters come to life and become part of your set of friends, the ones you want to hang out with on a lazy afternoon or when you need someone to have your back. Piper and Myles are both the black sheep of their families. Piper is especially impulsive and that impulsiveness plays front and center in this book. It lands them both in a crazy scheme to save Myles business and quickly becomes so much more. There is the usual assumptions, confusion, and misunderstandings. Even though you see it coming it’s still fun to “watch” it happen.
Beware of Preston...he will totally steal your heart!
Just for This Moment is a fun, quick, quirky romance from a true Southern small town where everybody knows your business. If you’re looking for some light reading with Southern charm this will satisfy your craving. The entire Wishful series focuses on family, community, and romance.
Piper has always been “the different one”. She has forged her own way, become a nurse, strong and independent. She speaks her mind and does not care if the truth offends. Her heart id BIG and she loves her friends. When Myles moves to Wishful and plays opposite her in a play, sparks fly. But, due to a former disaster, she will not date a member of the play until it is over. After the play ends, they start dating. Then, the investor of his paper, call in the loan and Piper and Myles make a plan to enter into a fake marriage to access his trust fund; only neither one plan on it being a fake. His grandma gets work of the upcoming marriage, and while they planned to elope, she makes a production of it in just ten days. After their return from the honeymoon, each is so busy, that they don’t see much of each other. There is some miscommunication and a surprise. Will they stay together? Great read.
To save his newspaper, Myles needs access to his trust fund - but he has to be married. His friend Piper suggests the two get married so he gets the money, then divorce quietly later on. It's supposed to be a business transaction, but love has a way of interfering, as do the overbearing families of both Myles and Piper. Borderline plausible plot, but so well narrated, with lots of humour, and with such unique, lovable, quirky characters, that a reader will inevitably fall in love with this story and its protagonists, and believe everything happening. As a result, it's actually a very good plot, and the story progress will keep the reader glued to the page, so many ups and downs, twists and turns, and misunderstandings, you will suffer or be happy with the protagonists. One of the best romance stories I have read in a long time. Now I want the others in this series. Now!
I just love being back in Wishful! I started this series further along and it’s just great to go back and read the stories about the wonderful characters I have already meet in the later books. This one is a modern day marriage of convenience that you will just fall in love with as we catch up with Myles and Piper from “Be Careful, It's My Heart”. These books can be read as stand-alone or as the series from book one, if you read just one you will want to read them all as Kait Nolan makes you feel like you live in this quaint little town called Wishful. Some of the books are very sweet and some have a little bit of spice to them but all full you with joy as you read.
What happens when a fake marriage turns to something else?
Will it all turn out the way they planned it would?
This series gets better and better with every book I read.
To save his newspaper, Myles and Piper decide to marry for convenience. Well, until they realize that they actually love each other and want it to be a permanent deal. If only they were sure the other felt the same as they do… Though quite predictable, this is a sweet and funny story. However, I would have enjoyed it more without the cursing. Without wanting to be moralistic, I don’t really see the point in using some words / language when the story is not enhanced by it in any way (it’s not like it was an essential part of the characters). Especially since it seemed to collide with the values of the story. Still, I enjoyed how the characters solved their dilemma – as a couple as well as repairing the relationships with their families. Have fun getting to know Myles and Piper and discover how an instant decision turned their worlds upside down.
Loved this story. This is the first story I have read from this series. Therefore, I missed the introduction of Piper and Myles in a previous story, but I didn't need it to fall in love with both characters. Miles buys a newspaper and when his investor calls in the loan he is desperate to save it. He jokingly says to Piper that he should go marry a stripper in Vegas to get his inheritance. Piper offers to marry him to save the paper.. I couldn't believe the surprise reveal of who his investor was and why he invested in the paper. I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a well written romance with lots of lovable characters in a small town setting.
I really enjoyed this story of Myles, the owner of the newspaper, who needed to be married to inherit his trust fund in order to pay off the loan to keep the paper, and staff, afloat. Piper fell hard for him when they co-starred in the musical White Christmas that saved the town's historic theater. Surprisingly, it's nurse Piper who suggests they get married. Why not? She's never fit her family's mold. What transpires is a very warm, heartfelt and tender story. The reader can't help but fall for the people in this lovely town of Wishful, MS. The story is wonderful, the narration superb and Myles' editorial in the epilogue is priceless!
5 stars. As an ARC reader, this is an honest opinion. Ms. Nolan has once again proved to be an amazing author. I was starting to think I wouldn't get to read another good book. This wasn't just good it's great! I love Wishful. Ms Nolan gets you to feel like you're part of the adventure. You'll laugh, you'll cry and join in the cheering section too. I appreciate good proofreading, quality writing, no cliffhanger and a happy ending. You will get that as you get to hang out with Piper and Myles.
Fourth book in the wishful series, but can be read as standalone. Well what can I say ?! This book captivated me from start to finish. Despite the cliché storyline of the fake marriage turning into love, the fact that Piper and Myles already knew each other, that there was a crackling chemistry badly concealed between the two, that both were the black sheep of the family because they wished not to submit to the traditional diktats of their families, and that they respected and protected each other before saying "Yes I do "made me love this book madly.
I really enjoyed this story. The characters were fun and their antics entertaining. I love small town romance and this is a good addition. The quick decision to marry and work out the particulars afterwards kept me reading. There are a lot of little touches throughout the story that added to all the good feelings. They worked everything out in the end as all good romances do.
I have been provided with a copy of Just for this Moment by the author for an impartial review. This novel is a part of the Wishful Romance series and it was great to read another book in this series. In this book we get to see more of Piper and Myles who we have previously met in earlier books in the series. This book was just hilarious and had me laughing so much. I absolutely fell in love with these characters and I was sad to see it end. I can’t wait to read more of this author’s books.
Piper and Myles have now reached the end of her no dating period. Love how he contacts her immediately. They barely get started dating again and they end up in a marriage of convenience. When their feeling become real real fast will this turn into a real marriage? or is it already one? A misunderstanding occurs and well I wanted Piper to LISTEN!!! We do get a HEA and a bonus at the end. Great series!!!
Revisiting these characters and this small town was a treat. One of the many things I like about Kait's stories is the sense of charming and warm community and that even the secondary characters have a bit of depth, definitely potential (like you know there is more there - they are just waiting their turn for her to tell their story). Piper and Myles though, were really interesting protagonists with a compelling story. Loved it!
