A vast improvement over the first two books. I actually like where this story is headed, though the two main characters are starting to feel more 2-dimensional than the background characters. I have a feeling we won’t know much about them until the final volume.
Also: Is it just me, or does this feel very Utena-esque is both tone and plot?
This will be my 3rd and final book review for “Akuma no Riddle” by Yun Koga and illustrated by Sunao Minakata. Last time 2 of the assassins were already “eliminated” from the school and making attempts on Haru’s life; a flower on each of their desks whenever they were eliminated their teacher being told they had dropped out. It was a mostly normal school day when their professor announced that they were going to have to stage a play, roles casted, uneasy looks passed around and it seems some bad intentions with good reasonings are about to become a reality, will the show be a bust with the death of haru? Or how will they make an attempt on Haru’s life? Tokaku, Haru’s protector seems to always be there. Honestly the play was a bit un-suspenseful with most things could be predicted but at the same time I liked it, for the first assassin that tried this time they had a unique way of trying to take out Haru while even taking out a fellow assassin, her relationship with her partner a red haired woman taller than she was; was delightful to watch/read until the end. The second assassin decided to make their move at the end of the play asking to meet back on the stage/gym floor where they’d duke it out but surprisingly she had other intentions. This character is one of my favorites she’s doing this all for the sake of her goal but it’s not a bad goal, it’s something she needs and wants to the point that she’d go this far just to get it, almost as if it had not mattered if she had died for it, as long as she gained the reward at the end was all that mattered to her. That makes her such a good character for me, the amount of love she holds but the wrong things she’d do to express it is wonderful. Basically once again it’s just really good, in my opinion that no ones obligated to agree with but you know, I’d genuinely recommend this book as well as the animated show for it, practically brings what’s in the manga to life although with slight alterations but it’s barely noticeable unless at the end of the book, I am unable to tell you how drastic because otherwise how else will you read it.
Just as a warning to those that find this sort of thing annoying there are some partially nude scenes but nothing is shown in details so I wouldn't worry if you already like this series.
Haru has been able to survive up to now and as each member of the Black Class attempts and fails to assassinate her they are "transferred to another school" or are hospitalized making the class smaller by the volume. Most of this is thanks to Azuma who has a keen interest in protecting Haru and whatever interesting past she carries with all of those scars on her body.
One of the only problems I have with this series is with the exception of a few girls a lot of them look very similar (especially up close as they tend to zoom in to show the malicious glint in an assassin's eyes) but as the story continued the number of characters continues to drop and the way Haru is targeted toward the end of the book is one heck of a cliffhanger. I am sure it will be a blast. :)
However there is another story I really got into revolving around Chitaru Namatame and Hitsugi Kirigaya as confessions are made, truths are revealed, and prices must be paid even as the Black Class puts on their own version of Romeo and Juliet with these two as the staring roles. The tears falling upon Hitsugi Kirigaya's face were powerful as the curtain closed on the duo.
I like the relationship between Sensei and Tokaku Except maybe for the part where Sensei tell Tokaku that she’s worthless, that’s when I’m ready to throw hands
In the third volume of Akuma no Riddle, the cliché school fest that every manga set in a high school needs is taking place. Tohaku x Haru gets more obvious here, and there’s another dramatic love story in the focus which ends . In general, this series is much more character focussed than I expected. Like I’ve said before, the wishes the girls make say a lot about them but at the same time, they’re a bit too pseudo deep for my taste.
