Street rat. Scoundrel. Thief. MURDERER. Those are all names I’ve been called. Names that were fitting at one time or another. But you don’t throw a vampire into a foster home and expect her to come out a model citizen, do you? And you sure as hell don’t feed her Mac and Cheese with a side of lashings and expect her to roll over and play dead. Even more, you don’t offer her up to men twice her age and permit them to hang their soggy bits at the base of her chin without expecting her to bite it the heck off. Despite the murderous bone in my body, I didn’t wreak havoc on my foster home – at least not the kind that leads to death. Instead, I did what any girl as hard-headed and short-sighted as I am would do. I LEFT.
Rogue Academy is a Paranormal Academy Romance, fit for readers who like, vampires, shifters, fierce, strong, female leads and the need to not have to choose between one hottie or the other. Sometimes, both quality and quantity matter.
Mariella is a born vampire that had a very rough start in life, then she met Reece who taught her a better way. Realizing that there are hundreds of vampires like her that are beneath the Vampire Council's notice and therefore help, she and Reece founded the Rogue Academy to train these vampires to live alongside humans and control their urges, etc. The success of the academy lands them on the Council's radar at a critical time of leadership change. Mariella discovers a link between her unknown family and the new heir apparent.
Hmm, ok. Well, there are things that I liked about the book - it's not your typical set up where the MC is an underprivileged student at some academy and learns that she is all-powerful and has some special destiny that requires she has a harem of at least 5 studs. I liked that she created this school and runs it. I like that they are trying to help the forgotten/outcast vampires in society. I'm not sure what they meant when they said they taught them to be their best selves; I made some assumptions there. And I actually like that it wasn't an RH right off. It kept me on my toes wondering which characters were going to slip into that role. However, I thought the big reveal of Mariella's true purpose was weak. Since everything else about the plot unfolded slowly, I think I would have preferred if he revealed things slower and drew it out a little more. The ending was also off in the same way, it was like - Tada! Here's a new character that we know nothing about and now we are going to fight a war that we didn't anticipate. It was a little much.
I'm not sure. I think I'll put book two on my TBR, but I'm not in a rush to get to it. There are so many other books that require my attention for now.
I'm on the fence here after finishing this book. On one hand it definitely sets itself apart when it comes to the KU Academy Craze. This barely qualifies itself as what I would call an Academy novel, and other than the FMC running an Academy has nothing to do with that life really. On the other hand I felt like I was dropped in the middle of something that I missed the start of. Is this by chance a spin off? It seems like we missed a book somewhere.. or something..
Story wise this is definitely intriguing and I honestly felt it had a unique start to a RH. I mean I had to pause and go do some research to make sure I hadn't misunderstood that it was a RH novel. So it really felt like the author was pushing us in one direction only to flip the script and make it happen completely different. I really don't honestly know what exactly is really happening plot wise. There is a bad guy.. who has apparently been getting away with things forever now and our FMC, Mariella, has just discovered that this guy has had more to do with her past and her life than she ever thought possible. It seems our goal is to find our protectors and save Mariella's parents. I'm not sure at this time how strong of an end goal this is for me.. Its only book 1 maybe things will get more complicated and better as the story goes on.
Honestly I'll probably continue this series just to see where it heads. This was a super fast read and I'm really digging Mariella and her badassery.
Mariella (the main character) is a Vampire & her boyfriend Reece who is a Human run Rogue Academy. Which they set up themselves. A School and safe haven for wayward Vampires. A place they can call home that Mariella herself didnt have. In her world though there are others that dont like her school & want it gone. Through the course of the book she finds out why as well as other plot twists & turns. Its a fab twist on the regular Vampire genre. Nothing like teenage angst ridden vampires which i really liked. A strong female character and great characters around her. Not so much a cliffhanger ending but an ending that you know will lead to a bigger story in the next book. Bring it on Ill be reading it thats for sure
Nice start to a fascinating tale that includes vampires, shifters, and humans. Our main character is a vampire in love with a human that seems special I must say. The two of them run an Academy where they essentially rescue vampires in need of guidance. With the world building it takes a little bit for the story to get going but once it does it sure moves fast all the way to that twist at the end. Can't wait to see what happens next. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.
Couldn't hurt to have an editor go through the book and fix all the typos and grammar issues? Such a good premise but hard to get into the book when having to reread sections with mistakes.
DNF @ 85% First off, this book needs to go through another round of edits. I easily ignore a couple of errors but every chapter? It's off putting.
I did enjoy the start of the book however it quickly went down hill from there.
Mariella is a young born vampire in her 20s who has somehow, despite her age, managed to create an academy for born or made vampires who are lost souls who search for a better life. The vampire council hate her school and basically a bunch of blue blood pricks.
As the book progresses, she barely has any interaction with students, teachers or the running of the academy. Just goes around on a wild hunt for answers about her exiled parents.
Reece is her human mate/love interest that helped her get to where she is today. At the beginning of the book, it's written "He's as close to a soulmate as someone like me will ever get. I'd be thankful for that if it weren't for the fact that I'm allergic to anything that smells even slightly like love." Then a few days later, she and Reece are confessing their undying love for one another. Whaaaatttt????
I lost interest just after halfway but tried to push myself to finish. At 85% I gave up completely. The story had so much potential but really fell short.
I rated 2 stars because the beginning was really good before it crashed and burned.
Cons: - There wasn't even an attempt at world building. Info dumps are a pet peeve of mine because they're cop outs, but even that would've been better than the complete lack of information provided. - There was no character development. Mariella had a list of characteristics that was repeated, but that was it. The closest to anything real developing was her 180 due to Reece's big reveal. Even that fell flat. - The plot was substandard, since all of the references to the development of the Academy were vague (honestly, it was like it happened in a prequel and the backstory was assumed knowledge). They are graduates of the school even though we don't know how long it's been open or how long it takes to graduate. There was also no real reason for the sudden push to learn about her parents. Mariella simply felt compelled at the same time that Boering happens to be involved in his own plot... no rhyme or reason given. - The grammar. Dear literary gods, the grammar!! Every. Single. Chapter. There were missing words, incorrect words, incorrectly used apostrophes, incorrect capitalization, different spellings of the same name from one chapter to the next and the tenses switched from one paragraph to the next.
Conclusion: If there was an editor involved, the author should demand a refund. The author should then go back to 8th grade creative writing class, pass it this time, and then rewrite this story. I've added this author to my 'Never Again' list.
Skipped whole pages trying to make sense of this book and hoping it would get better. Never did. Doesn’t even fit prologue. Just very confusing, jumps around and never did come together. Sorely disappointed in this one .
Most Academy books I’ve read has the main character being a student but this goes in a different direction. Our main character here is the founder of the Academy. A refreshing take on a concept that’s becoming somewhat over saturated at the moment. The plot of this story is Mariella trying to save her Academy, retain control over it from outside political influences, and keep her students safe. That’s as detailed I can be without completely spoiling it.
Mariella is our female lead who grew up without another vampire to steer her in the right direction and had to do it all on her own until she met Reese. They have been inseparable ever since. We are able to see those 2 characters come to realize just what their relationship is to the point they admit it to each other. In the beginning, he was irritating me with his sneaky actions and comments but once I realized his motive, I found that I loved him!
The overall plot is good and didn’t really come to light until halfway through the book when Mariella finally got her answers from Reece. From there it just all snowballs and we start to learn who exactly are considered enemies to her. I can’t wait to
This is a RH series but it seems to be a build as she goes type of thing. She already has Reese who is devoted and in love with Mariella. We learn she has 2 protectors and we meet one of them at the end of this book.
There seemed to be a lot of sexy times in this book but other than the opening scene, it wasn’t overly detailed. Not complaining because it was still hot :D It will be interesting to see how the relationships pan out among these 4 since Mariella only knows 1 of them and he seems to be a little insecure with his position in her love life.
This was a fantastic book and not at all what I was expecting after reading the blurb. There were a few grammatical errors such as omitted words, or incorrect words such as “heart” instead of “heard” but it wasn’t enough to really irk me to drop a star in the rating. Fantastic world building, creative plot, and detailed characters. I look forward to continue this series.
The story was nice as it offers a new perspective into a supernatural academy; instead of a student’s perspective, you now see through a founder’s.
The main lead sounds like she’s in her late twenties, despite the fact that she’s a lot younger. I think that’s clever, because early maturity is sadly what kids in foster homes experience. The language was appropriate to that fact that the story sounds a bit more realistic.
I’m excited to see her and her team hopefully rescue her parents. I hope it has a happy ending.
I feel a bit uneasy, though, because I feel bad for Reece now that Xander has stepped in. I hope this won’t be a reverse harem, because, given the development of Mar’s and Reece’s relationship, an extra love interest would feel like a betrayal to me, and it would kill the mood for the book. Fingers crossed though, because seeing how this book ends, I feel like betrayal is exactly what’s going to happen.
I had to take a star off because of the amount of typos in this book. It seems like there are at least 3 typos in EACH chapter, and that’s a but ridiculous for a published—presumably proofread book.
Anyway, it is a nice short read, and I’m looking forward to the next one!
I really hate to rate a book lower than a 3..... authors work incredibly hard for their trade, and though not every book is everyone’s cup of tea - it WILL find a fan in someone. I wanted to be that fan for this book, especially after reading that blurb and scoping the beautiful cover. Sadly, even with an intriguing plot, there were far too many marks missed in this manuscript to offer high praise. It DOES have some good points though!
Pros: - Different sort of academy novel, told from the founder’s view instead of a student. - Reese.... once you get his deal, he becomes far more interesting. - Xander... not sure if he’s going to cause problems, but the introduction is epic.
Cons: - Zero world building. None. - Zero Character development....even with Mar, it’s blasé and scattered. - Feels like this should be a book 2 or even 3. We don’t know this world or characters, yet the narrative is treated like we do - and that we should care about them. Why? I don’t even know who they are. - Seriously.... did I miss a book? - Editing. Needs lots and lots of editing. Misspellings. Missed words, misused words.... - I’m not invested. There is such promise here, but unless there is a severe spit shine and polish, there’s no drive to read book 2.
You may think that this is just another Academy book but its not – IT’S SO MUCH MORE!!!!, This one is written from a different perspective, very original and bloomin brilliant!!!! Really Wow!!!! One of the best reads of 2019 to date. Mariella is a born vampire, Reece is her very human Boyfriend and together they have set up the Rogue Academy to help those in need who have good in them, the forgotten, unwanted and out of control vamps now have a home and a place to feel safe. The Academy aims to teach new vamps and existing vamps that have lost control to survive and live amongst humans undetected without being a threat and to find their place in society. All good right? Well no, not if you are the old original Vamps, who like things as they are and whom are ruled by politics and years of tradition. There are so many twists and turns which are brilliant along with one doozy of a cliff hanger at the end (Grrrrrr!!!!) This storey is very well written with characters that grab your intrigue initially and burrow their way into your heart by the end of the book - as I said Soooo Good. Don't let the blurb put you off it is really so much more than that portrays.
DNF at 50%, reserving the right to rate the book Halfway through the book and nothing substantial has happened yet. So I'm giving up. The blurb seemed interesting but this book definitely isn't. I can't even tell how half the book is over when literally nothing has happened yet. Summarizing the story so far - MC being all "nope I do not feel, my heart is made of stone" and hiding from her feelings, us vaguely wondering what the frick is happening here, two students dying, MC finding out someone's framing her school for murders they didn't commit, MMC hiding something from MC, MC foolishly believing his excuses about what it is.
Reece's being suspicious, Yes he is, it's true. But is his secret malicious? Mari doesn't have a clue. (mostly because she's too busy screwing him)
Honestly. The art of communication is dying a slow death with each of these books. Everyone's keeping too many secrets. Anyway, the book will probably get better further on but I'm not banking on that. I might continue reading at a later point but I can't be sure about that either.
Mariella was born a vampire but grew up in a human foster home where she was abused. As a teenager she ran away and survived by whatever means necessary until one night when she runs into Reece, a human. Together for years, they create Rogue Academy, an academy for vampires born and created. But there's someone trying to destroy what she created and Mariella is not going to let anything happen to her students. In the beginning, Mariella seemed cold and detached and it was difficult for me to connect with her. But after there was a threat on the academy, her true feelings were shown and she became more likable to me. I felt for Reece since he couldn't show his feelings for Mariella outside of the bedroom. By the end of the book, Mariella finally opened that boundary she created but then a new twist was thrown in the mix. I am curious to find out what the new twist means to Mariella's life.
I will say I did enjoy reading all about this academy and learning as much as I could about the main characters. The plot is sweet and gives you enough to keep reading. I'm not one to give spoilers so sorry for anyone that looks for them. I only have this book four out of five stars due to the lack of information that makes you connect and bond with the main characters. I didn't feel a connection that helps me as the read feel emotionally invested. I enjoy running around in my characters heads and feeling their highs and lows. I didn't get that with this book. All in all like I said it's a great find and the plot is getting good so I will totally be reading the next!
I like that this book is about the founders of the academy instead of the students. It makes an interesting change. It’s also unique in the the FMC starts out with one of her men in the beginning. I look forward to seeing how the new men integrate into their relationship. For me, this book is missing something that would make it five stars — it’s not one that made me feel like I couldn’t put it down. However, it’s still a very good read, and I think the storyline is interesting. There are a lot of typos and grammatical errors, but only one or two interfere with the reading of the story. I highly recommend reading this and am about to start on book two.
First off, the blurb does not do this book justice! This book is about Mariella. A born vampire who grew up in the human foster care system. After she ran away from that, she meet Reece. Who became her human lover /boyfriend. Together they have founded the Rouge Academy. A place where they bring in all the other forgotten vamps. Things are good until they weren't.. They have enemies, and political forces against them at the time where they are trying to solve a mystery. Read now! This is definitely my favorite read of the year! Five stars!
I really enjoyed this book. I love how Mariella and Reece started Rogue academy in order to give vampires a second chance and made them all better versions of themselves. She found family and support that she needed. I hope they kick some butt and make a peeing pay for all the things he has done. I need to see more of Marielle and Reece and what happens when you add her protectors to the mix. Super excited to see what comes next!!!
3.5 stars. The story was a little scattered and slow to start. It wasn’t bad but I had a hard time connecting with the FMC. The book started to get interesting and things came together at about 75%. It is a little different from the usual academy trope - the FMC is the headmaster essentially, but has her own mystery to solve and corrupt political organizational topple. Some steam and only one love interest, but alludes to another for next book.
OMG, what an absolutely brilliant storyline. Mariella had been abandoned and was left to fend as a vampire child on her own, where are her parents and why was she left to fend for herself? All these questions and more are answered. In this brilliantly written story that gives more than what was expected. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
*WARNING* contains explicit adult sexual situations This was okay. The biggest problem I had with this story is that I don't like the main character. Mariella seems like a whiner part of the time, big and bad part of the time, but a user all of the time. Reese idols the female lead and she barely makes time for him and only when SHE feels like it. I like the concept of the story, but not liking the lead character puts a damper on the whole thing. :-(
Intense, Steamy & Inxpiring!!🔥🙏🙌 A 4.25 Star Read 🌟 (Read using Kindle Unlimited)
An exciting & intense read. Full of danger & romance as the 2 founders of Rogue Academy, who teach & train the forgotten & lesser vampire's of society, fight to keep their doors open & much more!!😳💥 There's evil near the top of Vampire Council & he's out for their blood!😱
This was a gripping read. I'll be starting book #2 asap 🎉
Loved the ending! Excited to see what comes of Meriella’s Harem and how it will play out with Reece. Different type of academy style book since she isn’t actually attending an academy but the founder. I did enjoy the storyline but feel there are some missing pieces. Interested to see what happens in the next book especially with her parents.
A different take on an academy series with a founder's perspective. Mariella is young but is desperate to know who she is and where she comes from. The plot can use some work and there were some mistakes and missing words. (That usually doesn't bother me as I gloss over it.) I did enjoy the read and I'll definitely read more.
I will say that this book was different because it started in what felt like the midd. The author does a good job of catching you up at the beginning but I still felt like I was missing out on the connections between characters. They had relationships that I didn’t see being built. Overall I really enjoyed the story and will read the next book
Well I just finished reading this ,what can I say it's good, very good in fact. You get a story about vampires. With a lot of sex, some violence, spying a kick ass female leader her lover.Did I say it's good well apart for a small number of type's it is. Thank ladies you did good.
Well damn, I didn't really know what this story was going to be like when I picked it up. But it was great! These characters are strong, stubborn and ready for a fight. I enjoyed reading this and look forward to the next book.
