The Other

Rate this book
David Youngquist writes about ‘The Other’: “A lot of writers don’t really know where they get their ideas. I admit most times I don’t either. It’s usually an organic thing where several ideas kind of gel into one storyline. In the case of ‘The Other,’ there actually were things which inspired I did used to teach, when Fay and I first married; after that I worked second shift at a local factory for five years. Many nights found me up late grading papers, and then after working a late shift and getting home past midnight, I would often be awake into the wee hours of the morning. I am one of those people who can’t just come home and jump into bed, so I stayed up working on a writing project or something. There were several times, I heard something in my garage, like someone rustling around working on something in there, but when I would go to check on it, the garage would be empty except for Fay’s car. I always wanted to expand on this happening as a story, so ‘The Other’ is my offering to that.” (cover by Adrian Baldwin)

Jake is a teacher who has gotten caught up in the day-to-day cycle of life to the point that his life seems to be dull, boring, and monotonous. He seems to be going through the motions of life without any real enjoyment.

One night, he’s up late grading papers, and he hears a noise in the attached garage. Upon investigating, he finds some garden tools on the floor, and the trash is in disarray…from this point on things are different for Jake, but at the same time, they’re still similar. There is one huge difference--which I’m not divulging--but he goes about his daily routine, trying not to make it obvious to his friends and family that things aren’t like they were.

Jake loves his life now, but he’s afraid it will go back to the same boring life he had not long ago if he isn’t careful, especially now that he’s been contacted by someone who could take this newfound happiness from him.

“Please, come in. Welcome to our insanity.”

This was my first experience with David Youngquist. I loved this Twilight Zone-esque story! I am definitely interested in reading more by this author.
