In recent months, I have cracked the spines of numerous faerie based novels, each having been similar to the other in one form or another as far as plotting goes. Due to this, I have been leery of fae books in general, even though I adore the worlds created for the fae realm. Bound Darkly stands out amongst the crowd. Tarrant Smith drops the reader into Tir na n-Og, the realm of the Seelie and Unseelie courts where love is possible and mayhem is likely to occur.
As for the characters, Hueil was difficult to like in the beginning; I found him to be annoying. As the story progressed, he grew on me, adding a spark to the plot. His attraction and loyalty to Sinnie won me over. Their relationship was a heated battle between two warriors. Watching them grow as a couple drew me into their struggle to be together. I'm always excited to see a strong female in a warrior role, no matter if it's fae, were, or vampire. Her strength was unlike most females in the fantasy genre I've read recently. Their bond is intense, sensual, and defies the odds set before them by both courts and family.
I prefer reading series books in order to avoid feeling lost or losing character history important to the plot, but not in this case. Bound Darkly is a great fantasy read with a touch of romance to pull you into the faerie realm. I would like to have seen more imagery of the realm itself to paint a clearer picture of their world. Tarrant Smith is an author to watch and see what she will come up with next.
