There is a wonderful reference to a cross over starring the Beasts in this first volume. I love the use of a ghost hunting family. The fact that the brother and sister get along but are different - yet they respect the differences - is nice too. Interesting to see how it plays out.

I like the use of other animals as well.

Son: Wow, can we even go to Sheriff Tyson with this?
Father: And tell him WHAT? "Gas the sewers and flood the cemetery, you've got magic rats and evil dirt?"

The wise dog apprentices of Burden Hill decide to interact with paranormal investigators, 2 of which (the father and daughter) have the family gift and can understand them. They exchange information and the son investigator takes notes: OMFG! Wise Dogs!! Apprentices - STILL. List of all the dogs with Pugs - Duh (+2 irritant). According to the dad, apparently the older Wise Dogs used to have human companions! They now need to find The Master and stop the source of the evil permeating Burden Hill. Tight, tense, with plenty of character development AND action. I'm liking the 3 newly introduced humans, and the cats and rats are getting a bigger role too! This was a page turner, and it went fast.
