You’re stuck in the city of lights, just as the lights go out…
Justin Powell is no fan of crowds, and with reports coming in of an impending solar storm, Las Vegas is the last place on earth he wants to be. Duty bound to attend his father’s funeral, he just wants to grit his teeth through the family reunion and get out of there, but his brother has a different kind of send-off in mind…
A survivalist who’s spent months preparing for the worst, Justin has little patience for his brother’s high-rolling lifestyle. But before old wounds can be re-opened, disaster strikes: a catastrophic EMP that reduces America’s brightest city to a pitch-black shell of its former self.
As the casino lights go out and the infrastructure and systems that protect us all begin to crumble, the brothers must navigate frenzied crowds, criminal gangs, and a city spinning wildly out of control. The stakes could not be higher. And the name of the only game in town? Survive.
This is the first book in the Lights Out in Vegas series.
The writing is decent in this book though the dialogue at times is very back and forth where it is hard to know who is actually saying what. I didn't really care much for either the main character, Justin or his brother. Both are whiny (about different things) and both are self-absorbed. Still, they ultimately managed the sudden disaster fairly well. I think the resulting chaos would have been enough without the plot line of another robbery that mirrored one Justin experienced a few years early. The shop owner that threatens and then unconditionally befriends the brothers seemed like an odd throw away character especially with the religious emphasis. He helps them and then just kind of wanders off. Las Vegas was a good setting for this, though I definitely would not want to be there during a CME or any other disaster. I will continue with the series and hope that the characters improve.
This is the first time I've read Mr. Patten. I read All At Stake in one sitting. It was fast paced, I love EMP books and it did not disappoint. I've already downloaded the 2nd book and can't wait to start.
Is now happening across the world. Societal collapse. This book takes a while to set up the dynamics of the main characters but does so in an entertaining manner. Once started this book takes off in a whole new direction: action, the brutality of societal collapse from those who know they can get away with preying on the law abiding who they see as easy pickings. Others who normally would be peaceful act out of desperation in order to survive while others are too shocked to do anything but die. A story about the worst in people, but also about the best in people during desperate times.
Following the two brothers as they survive the first hours of the apocalypse, while trying to regain that relationship is reality. They have issues. How sad that human nature can regress so quickly that there is violence and mob rule to overcome. The experiences of the brothers are the catalyst to understanding and accepting each other. I’m on to the next book.
