This astonishing new collection from poet Bethany Lee weaves the thread of her keen attention around life's joys and sorrows, draws them tightly together and offers them into our hands. With unflinching courage she extracts beauty from her journeys as seafarer and grief-tender, makes her way into the present moment, and invites us to come along.
The Breath Between offers good company for hard days, water for the thirsty spirit, and a summons to inhabit your own life more fully. You will not regret the time you spend in the chapel of these words.
I am not a big fan of poetry, but something about this writer's poems puts me in a state of mindfulness and peace, like a good cup of tea made with quality ingredients, I can taste the difference.
Memorization is not my strong-suit, but this collection contains so many gems I want to hold forever (including one in particular that may be my favorite poem of all time), that it begged me to commit these to memory. Packed with lines of breathtaking beauty, it left me rapturous and winded.
10/10 absolutely floored by the mass of beauty contained in such a short book
This book was the perfect read for my latest depression day. I have a tendency to nitpick books (can't quite turn the editor brain off) and so I can't express in words the blessing it was to just... *be* with this book.
I follow the author on social media and so I already knew I liked her style, but I was completely unprepared for the swaddling of love and joy and hope and strength that emanates from every line of this collection.
As soon as my budget allows, I'll be buying a paperback copy and adding it to my favorites shelf.
"Poetry brings present that which is apart / Let us be here together"
Right from these opening words, Bethany Lee brings the reader in close to her world, into a most exquisite present. There is so much to love in these poems: luscious, visceral language, a keen eye for detail, a fierce sense of optimism and faith. This book is a treasure, one that I will happily return to again and again, as though in the company of a friend.
(Disclaimer: Bethany IS a friend of mine - but it biases this review only to the extent I have had the honor of watching this book come into being and have a bit of an inside track into the mind and heart of the author. But it is by no means a prerequisite for loving this book.)
I loved this collection of poetry. At times I found myself crying at the relief of my feelings put so perfectly to words, and for me, this is what I hope for when reading poetry. This is definitely one I’ll reread.
