Two dead art experts and a secret cache of paintings which may have been the work of Lake George's most famous summer resident, Georgia O'Keeffe, set writer Ellen Davies on a collision course with danger. Ellen thinks she's stumbled on a multi-million dollar find which will send her career in journalism soaring. But, as with other recently discovered O'Keeffe paintings, nothing is one hundred percent certain...and Ellen may not live long enough to uncover the truth.
Anne lives in Glens Falls, NY and is a member of Sisters in Crime, Mystery Writers of America, the Lake George Arts Project, the Adirondack Center For Writing, and the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council. In conjunction with her novels, she writes articles for Mystery Scene, Mystery Readers Journal and local and regional publications. She is married and the mother of six children.
I have always been fascinated by the art of Georgia O'Keeffe and this is an intriguing mystery to open a new series by the mother of author Kate White. This may be Anne White's first novel but I never would have guessed if I hadn't seen that as part of the marketing.
I'm hooked and can't wait to continue reading the series.
Ellen Davies, the Mayor of Emerald Point on LG and her friend Diane Anderson, find a dead body in the middle of a smoldering fire in the center of Diane and her ex-husband's lakeside livingroom. Jim Thompson, the Warren Co. Sheriff investigator interrogates both of them at the Marlborough House Inn where Ellen later discovers Georgia O'Keeffe knock off paintings. Someone tries to kill Ellen when she becomes involved. Josie Donahue, the teenage daughter of Kate who owns a cafe and catering business disappears. Kate is Ellen's best friend and when she tries to find her, she uncovers Berhart, an art dealer from NYC, taking crates of phony paintings out of the Inn. She finds Josie in the basement of the Inn and is able to call the sheriff's office to arrest the forgers.
Could there be an undiscovered trove of Georgia O'Keeffe paintings in upstate New York? Anne's White story explores the world of art forgeries in a small-town setting. Anne White was a winner of the Malice Domestic grant in 1999 and this was her first book. I did enjoy the details about upstate New York and about O'Keeffe herself. I was less persuaded that a grown woman would be such a ditz. I understand she has a different protagonist for the later Lake George mysteries so I may give them a look.
Anne White writes mysteries set in the Lake George and Glens Falls, NY, area. I enjoyed this book but wasn't able to finish it because it was due back at the library. I intend to pick it up again when I have time.
Although the plot points were pretty good, the writing seemed awkward. I think trying to write from a first person point of view is difficult & I often felt myself annoyed with the narrator rather then on her side.
