Psalm 119 is noted for its call to delight in the word of God. But we must not fail to realize that this great psalm is also infused with great lament.
J. Stephen Yuille is preaching-teaching pastor of Grace Community Church in Glen Rose, Texas. He is also the director of Baptist studies at Redeemer Seminary in Dallas, Texas, and the author of Living Blessedly Forever: The Sermon on the Mount and the Puritan Piety of William Perkins.
A very helpful exposition of Psalm 119. The author sees the psalm as a lament psalm, which was a different way of looking at it for me. Although the psalm is the passage in scripture about the word of God, it is rooted in the psalmist’s experience of life with its troubles, temptations, sins, disappointments and longings after God.
In all these areas, and more, this book takes us through the psalmist’s experiences and his constant turning to the word of God. The author has a chapter on each stanza plus separate chapters on a couple of the key verses.
The book is challenging, faith-building and heart-warming and, if read prayerfully, and with an open Bible, will do the reader good.
Yuille convinces the reader that Psalm 119 is the path of blessedness in God, even in seasons of lament— that is to say that in Psalm 119 we find the path of life.
The author pulls from Spurgeon, Manton, Bridges, and other phenomenal commentators of this most blessed Psalm.
Yuille takes the reader to deeper meditation of Psalm 119, and gives the preacher outstanding ideas to follow.
I do wish they would have edited out some of the repetitive sentences though they are good reminders.
Beautifully written, conversant commentary on Psalm 119 and jam-packed with rich quotes from the Puritans and other godly men. So much in this small book to meditate on for instruction and encouragement as the author walks expositionally through the psalm. I will come back to this again and again every time I turn to this beloved psalm.
