Tracey West is the New York Times bestselling author of Dragon Masters, a series in the Scholastic Branches line. She has written more than 400 books for kids, including the Pixie Tricks series and the Underdogs series with Kyla May.
Some readers also know Tracey for writing books based on animation such as Pokémon and LEGO Ninjago.
She currently lives in the western Catskills of New York with her husband, Bill; their adopted dogs; and a whole mess of chickens.
Time travel remains one of my favorite fiction genres and this book doesn't disappoint.
Still dealing with consequences of their battle with Maldred the Dragon Masters set off to find Eko from wherever Maldred's red dust has sent her.
They head to Maldred's lair where they find a very mysterious wall painting. The people painted on the wall turned out to be trapped by Maldred in time. The Time Dragon is the only hope for these trapped people. Everything is going smoothly when Drake suddenly gets knocked out of time.
We spend a good portion of the story with Drake trying to get back to his own time. When he does return they make pretty quick work of freeing the people trapped in Maldred's wall which actually creates the set up for the next book.
Cute quick reads, my kids are highly invested in these characters.
Between reading with my kids and my nephews I have now read a Dragon Masters book 23 times. Sixteen of those reads have been in the last 6 months. And currently there is no sign of it slowing down. As a family we love these books! A few years ago, I read the first eight books of this series to my son. Then his interest was drawn away. My youngest daughter really enjoyed them and the three of us read them, she listened to her brother or I read. This year my youngest has been reading them to me. She now gets a little frustrated that I have not read ahead now, because it often means she reads an extra chapter or two because I cannot tell her what is about to happen. Confirm or refute her guess. This year we found out that my nephews have been reading them and that he was only 1 book ahead of us. He is reading the physical books and we are reading the eBook editions. This is a great story in a wonderful series. It is one of my favorites. My youngest daughter is insistent that we will read the whole series. And she has spent her reading challenge money buying all the kindle editions that are available. Including Griffin’s Guide for Dragon Masters.
This series really has staying power. I have read some of the stories 4 or 5 times now. And have been reading them for over 4 years. And I still enjoy the stories as do my children. My son who thought he had outgrown these stories has been sitting in and listening to his sister read them to me again lately. It is also great to know that my brother’s family loves them as much as ours. It is fascinating to watch the kids interact and compare notes about the books that they are both reading. And to predict what will happen next based on the endings of the book, or title of the next as we queue it up.
One of the best things about this series is that it is a true series. In that each story builds upon the next. The stories are strong enough to be read on their own, but as a whole we get to watch the growth of the group as they come together as a team and learn to work together and support each other. We see some characters come in and out of the stories. At the end there is usually a hint, or a hook for the next story. In this one we meet new dragon master named Lukas and his dragon Maj, we also find out that Lukas was not Maj’s first dragon master. We find out that he is becoming a clockmaker to help with the workings of the chrono device Maj rests upon. For in this story Maj can transport not only to places but times. And the whole reason they are looking for Maj’s help is to free the people trapped in time in the wall at Maldred’s workshop. But things do not go exactly as planned. And Drake ends up meeting a new creature, an Imp, and gets flung across time and space. Now all alone he must find a way to get back to the others and complete the mission they started.
This is the first volume illustrated by Daniel Griffo. I believe Daniel is the seventh illustrator so far for the series. The illustrations keep a consistent feel and look. But each artist leaves their own mark on the books they work on. Some illustrations stand alone and some wrap around the text and span two-page spreads. And my daughter absolutely loved the cover of this one. And when we got to the image of the time dais, she spent a lot of time examining the device. My daughter loved the drawings of the time dragon. These are some of my favorite illustrations in the whole series.
This is a great read in a wonderful series. They are fun books for readers both young and young at heart. They can be enjoyed over and over again. I am impressed with the staying power of this series. After multiple reads over several years I still really enjoy returning to the Dragon Masters. And look forward too many more reads in this series, as my daughter is insistent, she will read them all to me! This book was given a quick and solid it 5/5 stars from both of us! A great read in an excellent series.

When the Dragon Masters attempt to save Eko they have to go meet Lucas and his dragon, the Time Dragon. When they attempt to travel back in time they have someone extra tag along they weren’t expecting. I will admit this was a new and cute surprise to the series!
I love this dragon Masters book because it is cool you might LOVE this dragon Masters book too. if you try it you might LOVE this dragon Masters book. if your read this book you mast be a good reader.
My 4 year old was confused by the time traveling in this book. It’s a pretty complicated subject for such a small kid. Regardless, she still enjoyed the book.
A dragon that can travel in time is fun and new. I'm pretty worried about their nonchalance at freeing tons and tons of "good and bad" wizards in order to save Eko. Surely they should think about the potential danger of letting free so many bad wizards?? Like if someone is wrongly in jail we don't just free everyone that's in there without even really paying attention to who we are freeing? Pretty sloppy and irresponsible. I'm glad Eko seems to have changed from being "bad" to "good" though I'm still a little upset that her valid point of locking up these dragons no longer seems to be an issue anymore.
This had some time travel! I always find it fun to figure out where the author bases her fantasy cities with where they are in real life. This one is based off of Solvenia. Casgore Is somewhere in the fantasy version of the Slovenian Alps (found that out thanks to the author answering my question). And the clock on the cover is based on a famous one in Switzerland. Fun little facts I learned.
Why is this a three instead of a four? Because my five year old said so. This one had a lot of wandering unknowns in time, so it didn't have a ton of action. But it's still fun.
This series is so amazing and my son and I both enjoy reading them so much that it pains me to say anything critical about them. Usually, any issues I have with them are related to the fact that they are written for 6-8 year olds, not adults. This one, I didn't love the antagonist. I thought it was a weird addition that didn't jibe with the rest of the series. Now I applaud the way the author is trying to do new things while still keeping it a Dragon Masters book, and seriously 90% of this book is awesome, just like 99.99% of the series is!
In order to save Eko, the rogue dragon master who tried to save Rory & Drake from the evil wizard Maldred, the kids seek out a time dragon for help. Problem is, an unhappy imp causes Drake to instead be thrown back in time by himself. My kids were on the edge of their seats (metaphorically speaking) to find out whether Drake would be able to convince Griffith and Worm to help him save the future. 3 stars for adults, 5 for kids, for an average of 4 stars on this one.
So some wizards were trapped in time and they needed a time dragon to get them out of the wall. Maj, the time dragon, was able to get them out of there. Dragon Master’s name was Lukas. The first time they tried, Beezel, the imp, changed the time and made them go back in time.
Why does Beezel send Drake to the past? Because it was Drake’s fault that Mildred was trapped

My daughter loves this series. When she was younger, it was hard to find books to keep her attention, and this series did the trick! She keeps requesting the new ones, even though she's headed into 6th grade and the reading level is way beneath her level. Pretty sure that as long as this series continues, she'll be reading them, even if she's in her 20s!
The more I read these, the more I understand how simple these stories are. Wonderful dragon stories, but your reader will have to be fairly young to really enjoy these. There are lots of dragons, but there is also a good amount of repetition in my opinion.
