Continuing on the carefree tone of the previous volume, this volume has our intrepid couple continue their adventures of both worlds.

However, the fantasy side of things seems rather badly written, even by the low standards the previous volume sets in that aspect. The major issue here is that the plot has our hero shuffling from a multitude of places while introducing a rather weak antagonist plus many other supporting characters, resulting in a rather confusing mess of events seemingly only joined as an effort to clear off bullet points. This makes the world-building attempt really weak and does showcase the author's limitations.

Conversely, the modern day side is pretty well-written, and while I'd hate to say this, plays out like the sappiest romance bordering to almost blatant wish-fulfillment fanfiction. Things even get spiced up when our lead character even invites another character to join him and Marie to his world and go off a hot-spring trip. While it's definitely sappy as heck, it's still pretty enjoyable to read provided one takes it in stride.

Overall, this volume has me feeling pretty mixed about it, as the author is clearly more comfortable in writing the slice-of-life and romance parts, but the fantasy/adventure parts are falling really flat here. I'd actually rather wish he'd concentrate on the former parts now, especially when the isekai genre is pretty flooded by generic fantasy works nowadays.

What happens when a mother needs a break from the youngsters in her fantasy world? She has a part of herself take a vacation... Being a high-level "monster" means that the vacation will be interesting and a bit different from what one expects.

This book started really showing us more of the characters. The setup with the labyrinth was nicely done. The interaction with the mageś guild gives us a really nice peek into that bunch of folks...

This was a nice continuation from book one.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to read all of this, specifically the web page expired for the prepub during the scene at the hot springs, but I did have the final part to read as well (basically the climactic battle and some housekeeping with the sorcerer's guild). I did at least skim read to a handful of significant lines in that part 10 that point to some relationship development, which I'm pleased to see (in a series where the main are spending 24/7 together, forced to sleep in the same bed, and are so touchy / feely / huggy, it's hard for me to believe they'd do a "will they won't they" for too long, especially considering they're adults when in Japan).

This volume also begins to develop the Magi Drake, someone that appeared to be more of an occasionally appearing side character, but now appears more like a major cast member. Again, I didn't get to see how they convinced her to sort of party up with them, just saw the very beginning of the hot springs trip (when she's observing their care for one another in awe, it warming her heart, but also disgusting her with the lack of acknowledgement of a relationship when they're so close). She's a new Mommy, and we get to see just a small portion of her struggle (you know how it is, not being able to rest, constantly having to feed your young while you yourself starve, the usual). There's a lot of fan service with her too this volume (both picture wise and in text wise). But she's already got a baby daddy, sorry guys.

If you like pleasant descriptions of food, you'll enjoy this one. I still like to have those "picky eater" representations like in Cooking With Wild Game because I find every single dish being palatable for every human in a work hard to believe, but there's at least hesitancy when they eat stuff like Miso Potatoes on skewers that look "cheap" but turn out to be delicious, of course. Oh, and we do get to see them try and consume cooking they didn't make in the other world and generally feel disgust.

Comedy was decent in this one. Embarrassed expressions / red hot cheeks may have been an overused element to the dynamic, as was the repetition of the gag where they're acting lovey-dovey without noticing then get called out on it by someone in public (librarian, the Magi Drake, and Maribelle's master all do this at moments in the story). I spit out my milk when the librarian's husband saw not only Marie walk out of his house but also the voluptuous black haired (silent foreigner to him) Magi Drake, Rydra, walk out as well on their way to the hot springs resort. They must think he's ordering off a mail-order bride catalog or something at this point (I'm sure he'll play it off as another relative visiting, but how long can you do that if you're all visiting Earth regularly?). xD

Overall, I did enjoy this one. Marie and Kazuhiho closing the gap in their relationship to become closer is the carrot that I'm reading for. The battles I could take or leave (especially now that they have a level 1000 Magi Drake on their side, but that probably means we're looking at tougher opponents in the future if you're a fan of that). There's still some cryptic stuff I'd want to get my head around more on a reread when I'm not zooming through (the relationship between the head of the sorcerer's guild and our Magi Drake friend; Marie's master's deal; the grand wiz and the other dude's plan for the Labrynth exploration). Some of this stuff will surely come up again in future volumes.

One of the biggest cases of "don't judge a book by its cover" I've ever encountered

My thoughts on "Welcome to the Welcome To Japan, Ms. Elf!" (日本へようこそエルフさん。) Volume 2

Written by Makishima Suzuki
Art by Yappen
Translated by Hiroya Watanabe

The story:
Continuing from where the last volume left off. Kazuhiro and Mariabelle are interested in exploring the new labyrinth they accidentally found but before that, they need to convince the sorcerers guild to let them explore it.

Kazuhiro and Mariabelle convince one of the most powerful beings of the world to accompany them to a hot spring vacation in japan. After that dragon joins their party and Kazuhiro gets suspected after a mage starts investigating him.

Enjoyment:
Definitely better than the first volume, it expanded upon the good things the first volume had and that made it way more enjoyable, it had the perfect mix of adventure and slice of life, it was very fun to read.

The verdict:
Never judge a book by its cover, in the case of this series I really think the cover doesn't fit the contents of the book, its a very good serious fantasy story with some romance elements but the cover does make it seem like something else. 6.5/10

A bit of a weak start, but we got a lot of fluff in the 'real world' and some decent lore in the 'dream world'. I'm slowly coming round after my original expectation of a slice of life cooking reverse isekai were defied. And I mean, there's still some of that too.

I really enjoyed this slice of life fantasy as the scene shifts from modern Japan to the game world. The mini game of find the slime in each chapter and the Takoyaki recipe and with instructions as a bonus. I looking forward to reading the next volume.
