It’s been no secret that I think there have been, shall we say, fundamental flaws with Rainbow Days and its storytelling. With that in mind, however, it remains a fact that this acquits itself as a near-perfect sendoff.
Giving over a volume to nothing but epilogues for all the couples is a pretty solid idea and it starts off focusing on the basketball bros instead, who could almost carry a series on their own. They’re a lot of fun and not at all the same as the regular guys.
Of the major couple chapters, two of these are excellent, one is pretty okay, and the last is fine. That’s a pretty good batting average, honestly, and better than I was expecting. Given how much I’m enjoying Mizuno’s work on Home Sweet Home I should probably have been less surprised.
Saying that Tsuyopon and Yukirin come off the best is not terribly shocking - they’ve been the best characters for the entire series and make for such a complimentary pair. Watching them house hunt and then getting the final scene in the last chapter is a perfect conclusion for them.
Anna and Natsuki get a little alone time and finally learn to be a little more comfortable with expressing themselves. There’s actually a fairly large amount of implied intimacy and physical affection in this one (a deliberate choice, per the author notes) and it adds a little spice that I appreciated. These two haven’t been this good together probably ever.
Keiichi and Nozomi have a pretty decent first date, they leave behind a lot of the stuff I never cared for with Keiichi and keep it just at the minimum, which helps. Nozomi is deadly earnest, but it’s okay watching the two of them explore their dynamic.
Mari and Matsunaga are where this falls down a bit. Despite being a couple, Mari has been her usual miserable self this whole time and it feels really stretched out beyond the point of belief. It’s almost as if she would cease to exist if she stopped complaining.
Matsunaga has had his moments, but Mari hasn’t really had any and was the series’ biggest misfire, I think. She barely removes the mask and, when she does, it feels like something that should have happened ages ago. No matter how much she may come to think of him by the end, this really fell flat for me.
And then the last chapter multiplies its coincidences a hundred fold to bring everybody together and get them in swimsuits, which I know I roll my eyes at a lot, but actually works here because it absolutely feels like one of those ‘bonus OVA episodes’ from an anime in both tone and substance.
It’s a fitting end for everything, honestly. I don’t think the journey was necessarily worth the destination, this did not have the plot to justify its sixteen volumes, but I really enjoyed the thoroughness of this sendoff and if you loved the series it’s a slam dunk and don’t even worry about it.
4 stars - yes, yes, not my favourite series by any stretch, but it’s a spectacular example of how to wrap things up for your audience and I both respected that and enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
Thoughts after binge-reading this entire series in a day: Yukirin and Tsuyuponnu are the best characters ❤️ But I really enjoyed seeing how the boys struggled to accept having to leave behind their childhood and become adults. Overall rating of the series: 3.5 stars
First couple (Anna and blonde guy) was boring to say the least, zero chemistry idk how they fell in love.
Second (Mari and red hair guy) was entertaining and toxic at the same time, especially mari, she just wanted to be loved but couldn’t bother returning the same feelings, not to mention she’s clearly not interested in men and that’s so unfair to red hair guy since he seems to be completely in love with her, she doesn’t deserve him she’s only using him to heal her abandonment issues.
Third my favourite (yukiren and naoe) at first Naoe was a bit too rude for my liking especially since yukiren was a bowl of sunshine and didn’t deserve it, but they really get better the more we see of them a true grumpyxsunshine couple and when he say “i love you more than anything in the world” “you’re a goddess” I can’t help but giggle 😭I could talk about them forever mostly Yukiren she’s just too precious.
Fourth and not bothering by them, just extra and so unnecessary.
Finally the friend group all together was the best, i was laughing with them and they were really fun with good Dynamic between them. Loved even the ending just thought they focused a lot on the first couple and wasted time that could’ve been put in something ACTUALLY interesting.
Actually gutted that this series is over.💔 Ioved every single volume & connected to every character. It was the perfect cozy, cute, slice-of-life story that will live in my heart for a very long time.❤️
