Lady Killer

Rate this book
Mitch Lovett, a recently divorced father of two, wasn’t looking for anything serious—but when he fooled around with an old friend, Dee Wynn, serious was what he got. Dee has decided that Mitch will be hers and nothing is going to stand in her way. But Gail, another member of their college group (and now their babysitting co-op), has had her eye on Mitch as well—nevermind the fact that she’s married to a jealous, abusive husband who just happens to have received a new gun for his birthday. When Mitch and Gail consummate their long-standing attraction—recklessly following their heart’s desires—they set into motion a series of events with ultimately tragic consequences for all involved.

Set in Takoma Park (a close-knit liberal community that borders Washington, D.C.) among a group of college friends now raising families together, Lady Killer explores spousal abuse and the ways that both long-standing friendships and marriages can unravel when put to the test. Ultimately, both Mitch and Gail will have to decide who they really are and what they really want—both for themselves and their children.

Uff - I honestly hate writing bad reviews when I don't have much positive to say, but I can say that I at least finished the book. This one just wasn't for me.

The title doesn't really live up to what you expect, even with reading the synopsis. I struggle to figure out what the point of this book was really about. It touches on domestic abuse and maybe would've read better coming from the point of Gail and her struggles rather than Mitch, who was completely unlikeable (which, as you know, I don't typically mind). Unfortunately there was no flow and the dialogue felt forced and unnatural. The sex scenes were cringe worthy - especially the very first one and I almost stopped reading there. However, I kept going thinking there was going to be some point coming and when there was a bit of a climax, it fell flat like the sex Gail was getting from her husband.

While I guess the point is to tell the tale of Mitch and Gail and their struggles to make decisions in their lives that are hard and against what they've been used to doing... it wasn't written in a compelling way and the last chapter or two was a rush of … not much. I only felt a twinge for one character and was happy with her ending.

Sorry, not my cup of tea and I'm so glad I don't live in that neighborhood.

Mitch is a bit of a "ladies man". He's a recently divorced dad of two. But there is something about him that women find appealing. He has remained friends with a group from college. He starts a romance with two women, Gail and Dee. But then a jealous husband arrivee on the scene. Gail's husband is abusive. This is a story about abuse, jealousy, sex and obsession.

Yes, I can see how love triangles start. After all, they happen all the time. I neither liked or disliked any of the characters. They all seemed a little lack luster. The writing was not the best either. The word "pecker" (who still calls their manhood that?) was a it overused. The story is very slow to start with but it does pick up a little. When the action happened, it was over in a flash. This is a very quick read.

I would like to thank Netgalley, Main Street Rag and the author Jeff Richards for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Lady Killer is Mitch Lovett. He's a divorced father of two, good looking 42-something, fit, gainfully employed, and he likes the ladies ... and they like him back.

He's still on good terms with his ex-wife, and she's now married to Mitch's girlfriend's ex-fiancee. He's sleeping with Dee .. and she's only too happy to tell anyone and everyone. But Mitch isn't as elated as she seems to be.

He falls into an affair with Gail, who's been a friend for several years. Her husband, ED, is an abuser and has a temper that flares all too often and violently.

Needless to say Ed flies off the handle when he is sent an anonymous letter claiming his wife is having an affair with Mitch.

And then all hell breaks loose.

This is a character driven novel involving spousal abuse, lying, cheating., sex, obsesssion, drama, love and hate and relationships in general. Not all the characters are likeable ... they all seem to have one issue or another. It's like driving by an accident ... you don't want to look, but you can't help yourself.

The story premise was interesting, although not unique. It was mostly predictable with an ending that left me a bit disappointed.

NOTE: There are very graphic intimate moments.

Many thanks to the author / Main Street Rag / Netgalley for the digital copy of LADY KILLER. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

I received this book as an ARC for my truthful review.

So, first, I would like to say I'm a little surprised about the other reviews. My review is exclusively about the writing and how the story is told. It does not (nor it should) include my taste for the genre or my personal preference for the ending. That's personal and varies from person to person.

Now the review: This book has a little bit of everything: drama, inner struggle, love, jealousy, sex, obsession, abuse and more. It took me a chapter to get used to the author's unique way of story telling. The story is written in present tense, which was interesting as it was my first time reading a book written that way. The story start simple, becomes complex and then takes off. I think the author did a good job telling the story, as if he was next to me retelling a juicy, neighborhood gossip that has gone wild. Okay, much more refined than that.

It was an interesting story that could happen to any middle-aged person that wants to survive their past without giving up on their old hopes and dreams. I recommend this book if you like real life drama about relationships, love and mistakes.

As I sat down to write this review, I wondered why on earth I liked this book. Many of the characters border on unlikable, I detest adultery in fiction (and real life, too, of course), and I have almost nothing in common with any of the characters or their circumstances. Yet against those odds, I still liked the book. The only other book I've enjoyed despite these issues is The Great Gatsby. I haven't figured that one out, either.

The probable ending haunts the beginning chapters. It's easy to see what could happen. I wanted to reach into the story and shake some sense into the characters. Can't you see that you're making a mistake? You have kids! Why are you doing this?!

Sleeping with your best friend's ex-husband and calling to brag about it. Carrying a loaded gun around the house after you've been drinking too much. Flirting with a woman with an abusive husband. These are troubled characters. It's hard to feel sympathy for how they destroy their own lives. But it also makes them realistic, too.

Maybe I misspoke (mis-wrote?) earlier when I said I had nothing in common with the characters' life circumstances. Dee is rather full of herself, with an inflated sense of her own beauty and allure; who calls her best friend to brag about her sexual escapades with that woman's ex-husband?

Yet there were moments when I did identify with her. Her sense of self has become wrapped up in Mitch Lovett. (Cue memories of high school and college, when I was the same way!) When she realizes that Mitch cheated on her--though he is hardly hers--the truth tears her apart. She finds that she has nothing left. The life she thought she had? It was only an illusion.

I feel the same way about Gail. She's haunted by the past, abused in the present, and confused about the future. The tragedy in her past makes me sympathize with her and understand how she married Ed, an abusive man with whom she shares little in common. (Cue memories of college, when I did similar things, minus the abusive marriage.)

The story unfolds slower than the typical thriller, and the pacing and tone is more literary than the standard crime or suspense novel. So if you're looking for heart-stopping action and unexpected plot twists, look elsewhere.

Yet it's also an easier read than many literary novels are. Richards doesn't bog down the narrative with flowery descriptions or excessively-detailed introspective narratives. If you're looking for ultra-literary prose, then you'll need to look elsewhere.

The bottom line is this: it's a slow burn of a story, starting out slow and speeding up later. It takes a while to get into the rhythm of the story. But once I did, it was rewarding.

I read an audio excerpt of this via NetGalley enjoyed it and agreed to received a code to access the full audiobook.

It’s perfect escapism. The story line is a bit soap opera in nature. As a newly single dad Mitch is loves his kids and his new found singlehood. His dating life is lively in there small town of Tacoma Park, a suburb of DC. It appears the dating pool is even smaller with is paramours are selected from a pool of friends he and his former wife have known since high school.

Complications in Mitch’s dating life set in when he begins dating his ex wife’s bestfriend, Dee. The ex, Cathy questions his intentions but Mitch is dismissive choosing not to have this conversation with his ex about his new lover.

Mitch’s love life gets him into trouble again when he’s caught kissing another friend Gail, who unlike Dee is married. Rumors begin to circulate in their small town. And word gets back to Dee who feels betrayed and vows revenge with her ultimate goal to remove the others woman from Mitch’s life.

The story unfolds with lots of twists and turns and an ending that is unexpected and entertaining.
Two narrators are used throughout the book. They alternate telling the story and are good in portraying the characters in three dimensional way. The description of characters and settings is detailed but not overly done. The story follows an orderly flow that’s easy to follow. There was only one scene that I found out of place. Mitch and Gail are away for a week end and they run into another couple. They suspect the wife is being abused. This scene is a vehicle to see how Mitch reacts to domestic violence but it just seems out of place.

I was kindly sent this e-book by Emily HagenBurger from Mindbuck Media Book Publicity.

It took me till I was a quarter way through the book before I got into it, I kept giving it a bit more of a chance until I found I was looking forward to reading it. I think my problem was in the way it is written, like more of an account of what happened rather than a story. That said, once I got into it that didn’t matter, and maybe it actually grew into itself once the author got going.

It is the story of a love triangle and one woman’s decision to try and get what she wants.
Mitch is dating Dee but then one afternoon acts on his attraction and has an afternoon of passion with married Gail. Gail’s husband is abusive and she instantly falls for Mitch as a healthier preference, though having an affair isn’t without its problems. One being Dee. Once she gets wind of the fact Mitch was seen kissing someone who wasn’t her she goes into detective mode eventually deciding to send Gail’s husband Ed a message telling him of the affair. What she gets, well, you’ll have to read the book!

I would definitely recommend this book – and don’t give up on it unless you’re more than 25% through at least!

More quicksand. This book went nowhere. I thought I’d be reading about a murderer, instead it’s a newly divorced guy who can’t seem to get his act together. Not worth the time.

This book had me cringing at several points. Firstly, the regular use of the word, "Pecker" had me wanting to scream. The story was completely unbelievable, while still being predictable too. The way the story was written was not pleasant to read. "She did this, she did that, he said this" - It was like reading a teenager's diary. Not for me, I'm afraid.

I spent a lot of this book waiting for something to happen. Something I could care about. Something that would elicit some type of reaction, some type of emotion. Something other than a rundown of who's cheating who in this babysitting co-op. There is a story of obsession in there somewhere, but it's not enough to stir up any kind of mystery. It's actually rather pitiful, a childish attempt to get attention. Things do pick up in the last fifteen percent or so, but it's over quickly. I did finish the book, but I'm left a little confused as to what this story was aiming for. The thing is none of the main players are exactly innocent. It's just that there are varying degrees of guilt among them, and none of them stir even an ounce of empathy. There isn't one character in this story that I felt like I could relate to. The blurb tells us that Lady Killer explores spousal abuse, and it's certainly in there, but I wouldn't call it an exploration. It's more a this is why she did this and why he reacted that way, and so on. I will agree that there are some tragic consequences, but it's all over so quickly that it doesn't have the impact that it should. There is plenty about Mitch and who his flavor of the week may be, which is talked about more often than not among the ladies of the co-op. This one is a quick read, and in the end, that's really the best of it for me.

This book just wasn't for me. Personally, I think it took the author to reach his stride. The sex scene in the very beginning was cringe-worthy and that alone made me almost put the book down. But I wanted to give the book a chance so I kept reading. The conversation starts off stilted and very unnatural but as the book goes on the conversations between characters begin to flow better and the sex scenes (while very descriptive) are less forced.

The plot was there, and while I wasn't the happiest with the ending that's not what ruined the book for me. My biggest issue with the book is the characters themselves. We don't get much backstory until the middle/end of the book and we aren't introduced to them very well. We are just thrown into this love triangle head-first. I didn't get the chance to build a connection with the characters. This left me with very little interest in their decisions or lives.

When I can't connect to, or care about a single character in a book I'm left with very little motivation to continue reading. However, I did finish the book so I couldn't in good conscious give it one star.

The book itself isn't bad, I just needed a reason to care about the characters and what happened to them.

Both the book title and description didn't really fill me with much enthusiasm for this book, however once I got a couple of chapters in I was intrigued to find out where it would all end, Mitch was a very likable main character although I did find myself more interested in Dee and cheering her on in her sneaky underhanded pursuit of Mitch.
I think this is the only book I've ever read that uses the word Pecker in sex scenes, strange and cringy and really doesnt work at all.
I read this book constantly wondering what would happen and how would it all end, sadly the sad action came and went in the blink of an eye with none of the characters seeming to really care, which I found disappointing. I disliked the character Gail from the start and by the end I still hadnt warmed to her at all and sadly I didnt care what she was doing, this opinion did sadly make the books end rather boring for me. I would recommend this book despite my personal feelings for individual characters the story is still well written and engaging.

There’s plenty of social drama in Takoma Park, a liberal enclave just outside Washington, DC, when a group of people who’ve been friends since college face major life choices and changes. All part of the same community and babysitting co-op,where they find themselves dealing with everything from parenting to spousal abuse to post-divorce dating.

Mitch Lovett is divorced and on the dating scene again, but he made a mistake…and it may cost him everything that matters to him.

Dee Wynn has dreams of spending the rest of her life with the man she loves…and that may be a dream that will turn to a nightmare.

Gail Strickland is locked in an abusive marriage…and things are about to explode.

As the lives of these people and the rest of the babysitting co-op collide, tempers flare, relationships complicate and events unfold, leaving some characters forever changed.

For this reader, there was a lot of time spent leading to a climax, followed by an ending that resolved so much faster than the build-up that it ended up feeling rushed.

Interesting plot

Richards pens a unique story in Lady Killer. I haven't read anything from this author before, and I liked this story. Mitch considers himself one of the world's greatest lovers, and here he is, divorced with two children. There is a lot of tension and characters within Mitch's world. It's a novella, and is one of those chilling stories that have creepy characters, stalker-ish characters, and some that just have those underlying secrets. The story got three stars only because I felt the story could've flowed a lot better, and some details aren't necessary to the plot, but can be entertaining though. I do feel that the characters were pretty well developed and had their own "baggage." This author's characters develop and interacts well with the other characters. I not only read the book, but I also listened to the audiobook, where the narration and performance will get a four star review. I look forward to reading many more stories by this author. This book is recommended by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews.

Perhaps this book wasn't my style or the writing isn't the type I'm drawn to, but the entire thing fell flat for me. I was interested based on the title and the cover art, but both were more dramatic than anything the book had to offer. The characters were flat and had almost no development, main character Mitch included, a divorced dad of two who seeks to...I don't know? He flits from woman to woman with no real basis as to why apart from that he can, and the women who sleep with him are just as poorly motivated. I couldn't connect with anyone in this book and the over the top stilted dialogue and rushed intimacy (again, with no grounds for it, it just HAPPENS, despite some of characters expressing trepidation/doubt about getting involved) were cringe-worthy.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy. This had no impact on my review.

I am going with 4 stars since there isn't a 3.5. It is a fast paced easy read. I was so caught up in it I was at 90% before I realized it was near the end! Difficult to describe this book. The characters are a group of 'yuppies' who have been friends from their teen years to middle age. Some single, some married, some divorced and all remain right up in the middle of each other's business. There are several very descriptive sex scenes with a little more detail than I care to read but found it interesting that the sex was described from the male viewpoint as well as the female. Many lies, deceit, anger, abuse, violence, adultry, and proof that all actions have consequences and that what goes around comes around, you reap what you sow, or do you call it karma! Overall a good read.

From the beginning of Lady Killer there is tension in the air. It feels as though something bad is going to happen and, eventually, it does. The characters have known each other for years. The relationships have often changed over time. Some have even become dangerous. Even so, the bonds remain. The characters are well drawn and the author vividly brings them to life. The story is fast paced and addresses some serious issues including spousal abuse and infidelity. The novel is well worth reading.

The story of newly divorced Mitch, and his love interests Dee and Gail is billed as a domestic drama, and while it did have drama, it just seemed very flat. As a character driven story, there was very little character development. The sex scenes were crude (and the use of the word “pecker” was just obscene) and really added no depth to the relationships. It was simply a bunch of rambling that didn’t really go anywhere. The only redeeming component was I felt that the narrators did an excellent job. Content warnings for domestic/spousal abuse, sex, language, violence. I was given a free audiobook download in exchange for my honest review.

This one was a struggle for me to get through. Honestly I don’t really think that the book lived up to its description. I found all of the central characters to be shallow, selfish and unlikeable.. This made it difficult to identify with any of them or care about the issues they were dealing with. The premise of the story and subject-matter can be difficult enough, but when we can’t find any of the characters to like, reading becomes a chore. I personally cannot recommend this book.

A suburban nightmare where spouses are passed around between “friends” when they are done with them. This is a story that will hold your attention as you try to figure out what makes these people act the way they do. Mitch is getting over a divorce and finds himself in bed with one of his wife’s best friend. Following this incident things get crazy as the relationship goes nowhere. A fit of jealousy sends things spiraling and puts life in danger. In the end the damage is done and several people are left affected.

Is it bad that I didn't like the main character, mitch, so much? But that's mostly because he was sleeping around and leading a woman on. Lady killer is fast paced and I was actually able to read it a lot faster than I was expecting. I can kind of relate to Dee. I think most females can because at some point we all feel like we aren't good enough. I do feel bad with how things ended. Dee deserved so much more!

Thank you to Main Street Rag Publishers and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Sex, lies and lots of back and forth - what I got was not quite what I was expecting. The premise is interesting, but the execution is... not good. Lots of very wooden dialogue, strange jumps in the plot line, characters that are anything but fleshed out, and writing that reads like a teenager's angsty diary - including the requisite vocabulary choices. Sorry, this was not for me.

Quick-paced and well-narrated, this book felt more social drama than thriller to me. The story was told from Mitch, Gail, and Dee's point of view rotating. It was nice to see each character's motivations from their own voices.

The narrator for Mitch is Ramiz Monsef, he does a fantastic job! Jer Adrianne does the female characters and I found them a little monotone but still executed well.

This was a quick listen with lots of good drama.

Mini book review for this quick listen!

Lady Killer by Jeff Richards

⭐️💫

Domestic suspense, love triangles (or squares...) and unlikeable characters oh my!

Well hello domestic suspense-I HAVEN'T MISSED YOU.

I did like the fly on the wall aspect of this one. You get an in depth look at the inside of a tight-knit group of old friends who are uniquely intertwined.

The writing was not the best either-the story is slow to start with but it does pick up a little. It's sort of blink and the action is gone.

Overall: This was a very quick read or listen for me.

This book was not for me. I couldn't get into the story or find myself really caring about any of the characters. While controversial topics within novels such as adultery don't typically bother me, I couldn't find much else to the book. I like to there to be some substance within the story. I did not find that the writing flowed easily for me. The word "pecker" within a sex scene was a no-no for me and the sex scene was very uncomfortable.

This story is about Mitch Lovett who is divorced and lives down the road from his children to be close to them. He and his ex-wife are friends with people they went to college with or some from school before that. At times they had dated someone else in the group. Mitch gets involved with two women, one married and one single. The story brings us through these relationships and how they end up.

This is not my usual genre at all, but I loved this book. It’s a great story delivered through great writing, and it kept me wondering until the end. I love it when authors use novel (ha!) phrasing and word combinations in descriptions and exposition. I listened to the audiobook version and the narrators are very, very talented. Highly recommend.

There seems to be no point to this story. It's just a short glimpse into the lives of some rather boring and somewhat disfunctional people.

Both Ramiz Monsef and Jer Adrianne performed well, although neither performance was spectacular. It's really just an ok performance and story.

This book is about a group of married with kids friends who live in a small town environment.
It's involves their relationships and troubles along the way

It's a well written book, but I found the storyline quite poor, but had solid characters.

Wouldn't recommend it to a friend probably though

It was the characters rather than the plot which made this book for me. I felt I knew them and that I was invested in what happened to them. There was something about this which made me think of those 1970s novels about couples with intertwined and complicated relationships. The writing style was direct and did not try to overshadow the core appeal of the book - the characters.
