The week that Lola Rose checked into the Regal Rose Hotel, three events caught her quite her widowed mother's surprise engagement to a famous London barrister, her desire to form a friendship with the cantankerous elderly woman living in the hotel's penthouse, and a dead body at the foot of the elegant sweeping staircase on the hotel's first floor. When a new acquaintance is charged with murder, Lola calls upon her trio of friends to clear his name. It will mean setting aside cocktail parties, night clubs, and late lie-ins, but Lola is willing to sacrifice much more to save an innocent man. Calling on her sophisticated upbringing as an Englishwoman's daughter and the Get It Done attitude taught by her Texan father, Lola will charm self-righteous hotel clerks, square off with cranky detective inspectors, and even tolerate a pompous German ex-officer to do what she knows is right. Welcome to the Regal Rose Hotel, the new posh and elegant hotel catering to the rich, famous, and eccentric in Jazz Age London. Try the hotel's signature drink, The Rose, at the Portage Club nightclub, dance the night away to the music of Dot and the Four Grooves, and sit with Lola Rose and her companions as they indulge in jazz, cocktails, rumors, and mysteries.
A lifelong writer, C. Jane is excited to combine her interest in history with her love of crochet in a series of stories blending romance and mystery. Her first novel, "The Secret Stitch," book one of The Donaghue Histories series, was released in March 2016, followed by book two, "The Sojourners," in July 2018. Both stories follow the life of a Scots-Irish immigrant woman attempting to survive in the New World in 1721. She also published a collection of her poetry, "Barded in Poetry," under the pen name Cari Reid. She has two more books upcoming this year: The Lost Soldier, book three of her series, and The War Poet, a historical novel inspired by actual events during WWI.
She lives in Camas, WA, where she is one half of the Ficstitches Yarns team, a quarterly crochet kit that features the continuing saga of the Donaghue family, along with a historically-inspired crochet design by her partner and friend, Laurinda Reddig, and includes locally hand-dyed yarn and a handmade accessory, all themed around the story. You can find her online at www.cjanereid.com.
Lovely lead character with her ensemble of helpful friends. Thoroughly enjoyed the backdrop as well as reading as the plot became clear. Went onto read more about Rose, and her friends, in the following books in the series.
A great start. A plot that revolves around treachery, jealousy, insanity and murder. The characters are not as flighty as some based in this time period. Colourful, pushing the boundaries of accepted behaviour and adding a lively spark to the read. The females are all outspoken, concerned with the right thing especially our heroine who as a Texan was more of a tomboy then most. The men are still locked (to some degree) in the war and the need to protect the womenfolk. The arrogant German had put everyone's hackles up. The staff with his demeaning behaviour, the jen with his disregard for what the war cost them and the women by making them feel like chattel. Therefore it wasn't really a surprise to find him dead at the bottom of the stairs. Was it one of the men caught up in the war? Was it the owner of the hotel who refused his blackmail efforts to buy it? Poison! A wrongful arrest, an elderly women under house arrest in her suite ad a group of young people (lead by our feisty Texan) out to discover the truth. Throw in jealousy and mix well.
Lola Rose is a Texan who is now living in London in January,1923. There is a death of a German in the hotel so many former soldiers from the Great War are suspected. Lola a nd several new friends start their own investigation and many entertaining events, lots of cocktails, and enjoyable conversations occur! It is a fun cozy mystery and the start of a new series about this jazz era, following the Great War. Lots of fun!
2 1/2 stars. A Texan young woman is an unusual heroine in a 1920s English historical mystery. Her attitude fits well with the brash Americans the English expected without being too far outside of accepted behavior. It's a fun story, particularly the life in a hotel. The beginning was a bit slow and there were too many side characters to get a feel for them without just blending in to each other. Overall, still fun.
I enjoyed this book. It was fun and exciting. I did look up some of the drinks that were used in the book, so I be trying some of them. I liked the characters in the book as they were as easy going as Lola. Considering that Lola is Texan moving to England, is good to see her reactions to London. I recommend this book.
Consider a competent proofreader. The poor grammar in this book is a problem which could be easily solved and would make your book significantly more enjoyable.
I was a little wary when I read some reviews, but I was needing something to read. I’m so glad I decided to give this series a look. This book had fun characters and a good mystery. I immediately got the next book in the series, which is why this review is short. I’d rather be reading!
Can't believe C. Jane Reid read my mind. I've been thinking a book with the heroine from Texas would be great. And Reid did it! I love Lola Rose and her adventures. It may seem strange to a non-Texan, but Lola's personality is right on the mark. Bravo!
This is a cute amateur mystery solving group with the main heroine being half Texan and half British with a saucy and fun loving personality ❣️🙆🏻♀️💃🏻🕵️♀️
