I've been writing and independently publishing for over a decade now. Time travel dystopia, paranormal mystery, thrillers. The genres vary, but I keep coming back to the same kind of story: people who have to make impossible choices and then live with them. Characters who believe in something and act like it matters. That's what I want to read, so that's what I write.

The first book had me shaking my head going this is whacked.. This second book and its revelations had me going WOW. This author defiantly doesn't write anything traditional – and I mean that in a good way. I powered through this one quickly, so immersed in the story I couldn't put it down.

So I was questioning where this series was going after I read the first book and if I would continue. After reading this book, heck yeah. I will be reading this series. This book hit me with some unexpected revelations and I can't wait for the next one in the series.

Edge of your seat

There’s something about this series that speaks to me on a deeper level than any other book I’ve read. The author mixes in Spanish terms (Mexican for us Americans) It reminds me of growing up in a Hispanic culture and helps me to relate and ultimately love the character. It also reminds me of that TV show Jane The Virgin. Although the tropes are completely different, the way the story is delivered is very similar. The author switches between English and Spanish terms, something I find super engaging. This shouldn’t be construed as the series having such an abundance of Spanish Termanology that you don’t understand. But the peppering of terms is exactly sufficient to keep me entertained. I absolutely love it, not to mention, Tess and her witchery is BADASS

Fast and savage! Loved it!

Black Magic’s Shadow by Kristin McTiernan is an absolute blast! The no-nonsense editor proves to be just as no-nonsense a writer, with a savage economy of words and breakneck pacing. The story starts with a bang, delivers solid character work and timely revelations, and hurtles toward an ending that seamlessly sets up the next book.

I never imagined Tess — and her dangerous, messed-up life — would hook me like this. This isn’t even the kind of book I usually read, yet I can’t wait to dive into the next one.

Highly recommended! A solid ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ read for me.

A very well written and compelling continuation to a unique story in the urban fantasy genre. The MC is dealing with a heckuva challenging life. She is strong and determined to deal with it. Unique and fascinating!

While I was very much disgruntled about the first book, I had picked this one up at the same time, and I'm not one to waste a book regardless of what I may feel about it.
This one I will freely admit was better than the last. We have a continuing tale, but rather than dealing with Tess and her messed up life, we have her aiding others who have messed up lives, and in so doing involves a case wind up digging her own past up causing her try and save those she cares about rather than just fixing her own problems.
I wasn't able to write the review when I finished reading the book, and now about a month later I am having a hard time remembering the plot other than that it was generally OK. I feel the writing skill is stronger than the plot, and the fact I'm racking my brain to remember what happened would sort of be a testament to that fact.

Book 2 of this engrossing trilogy will leave you anxious to dive right into book 3! Kristin is a master at pulling you into Tess’ world and taking you for a wild ride. This time around our story is told in alternating timelines, with some odd behaviour by people around Tess and a new budding romance that is surprising. We’ll learn some surprising information about Tess’ family, and meet some of those characters who will reveal important info about who Tess really is. Some important reveals about the future happen in this book that have set up my interest and hope for more books in this series. This series would make a terrific Netflix series!
