Can a fun-loving cancer survivor and a man whose heart is hardened by loss ever find their Happy Ever After?
Darby Livingston is a survivor. If she can survive breast cancer, she can survive the humiliation of accidentally flashing her pink panties to a stranger. A sexy doesn't-believe-in-fairy-tales stranger called Reid. Reid is the key to making Darby's amateur theater production of Cinderella a success, so she'll swallow her pride and beg, bribe, or use her feminine wiles to secure his help, because the play's donation to a cancer charity means everything to her.
Reid Hudson is used to being judged and ridiculed for his ability to sew amazing wedding gowns for Invercargill's boutique bridal shop, Next Stop Vegas. Whatever. He's a man who knows who he is and what he wants in life. But on the list of things Reid Hudson doesn't want… A) To be roped into costume-making for a cast of wanna-be divas. B) To discover an off-the-charts attraction with the play's Ugly Stepsister, Darby. And C) To fall in love with that feisty and funny woman who has no guarantee of a happy ever after.
Along with her terrier side-kick, Duke, can Darby convince Reid that if the shoe/slipper fits, maybe she's The One he's been looking for all along?

Darby and Reid’s love story was enjoyable read. After surviving cancer, Darby is trying to move on in life. Reid is a wedding planner and he meets Darby in one of the weddings. Their first meeting was cute with the Cinderella reference being thrown in. Then as they get more closer, they realize their love for each other. Naturally neither of them are willing to commit because of the cancer issues. Though at times the story seemed slow, thoroughly enjoyed the romance. Lovely read.
Love Everlasting by Tracey Alvarez Stewart Island #10
Every single book I have read by this author is a keeper and one that I will revisit. Her characters are people I would love to meet and spend time and the nice thing is that I can do just that when I sit down and read the words that have been written.
One is not given guarantees in life so one should focus on the present and make each day worth living – and that is just what Darby is doing. Sure, she has had to deal with breast cancer but she has done all that was recommended and lived four years after her diagnosis BUT she is not “cancer free” and that puts a kibosh on her search for a long term happily ever after. She has friends and family and a support group and is not “that cancer girl” that so many who have cancer become. She has dreams and wants romance and all the rest but...is she brave enough to risk love? She would love that fairy tale ending but kind of doubts she will get it.
Reid Hudson is a man among men. He can create beautiful couture clothing, plan and execute a wedding and is a wonderful friend. He is also gorgeous, built and HOT! He is definitely a keeper. What starts out as working together to create the costumes for a charity drama event and ball soon leads to more hands on interaction and not hands on fabric. With both Reid and Darby feeling the chemistry but realizing that the future is uncertain...what will they decide to do?
This story was absolutely wonderful and such a joy to read. I loved Darby and Reid and hoped they would find a way to a future together and was so thankful they had good friends to support them. I also liked how Prince Charming in the play wasn’t so charming and just how his underbelly was revealed.
I can’t wait to read whatever this author writes next and highly recommend this to everyone.
Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
Darby Livingstone is a veterinary assistant with a menagerie of cats and a dog, she's had breast cancer but her hair is growing back and she going for life full-throttle, including trying out for the part of Cinderella in a local production to support Sunflower House which provides accommodation to cancer patients while they are having treatment at the local hospital. Unfortunately being nearly six foot tall and a bit of a klutz means Darby is more likely to get one of the ugly sister roles!
Darby first meets Reid at a wedding, where she mocks him for fending off advances from drunken wedding guests before being soaked in red wine when the brides bouquet ricochets off Reid's glass, just like Cinderella Darby escapes into the night leaving her stained shoes behind.
Reid Hudson is that rarity, a straight male wedding planner, his mother died from breast cancer and his BFF MacKenna Jones has roped him into making the costumes for the production of Cinderella, he was going to refuse until he discovered that he would be working alongside the beautiful and charming Darby.
I was really enjoying this and then, about three-quarters of the way through it just seemed to run out of steam a little bit, the Cinderella riff kind of wore off and the inability of either character to commit because of their cancer fears became repetitive.
However, those were little niggles, this was still a fun, sweet romance between a man who can do it all and a woman who needs someone she can rely on.
I’m always excited when another Tracey Alvarez novel is announced. So much so, that I shelve what I am reading to slip into the world Ms Alvarez so wonderfully creates. Her books are pure escapism – the kind you look forward to relaxing into at the end of a busy day, and happily read until you just have to switch off the light.
So, when I read Reid Hudson, MacKenna Jones’ side-kick from Saying I Do, was the co-star in Love Everlasting, I couldn’t wait to read it. While Reid may not be your typical tailor and wedding planner, he’s a guy who knows who he is and what he stands for. He’s tall, built, and handsome, and loves to sew – get over it.
Darby Livingstone, with her strength of purpose and a will to survive, is a wonderfully written character. She’s sassy and fun, but also unsure of herself at times – a trait we all can identify with.
And what can I say about Hugh King. We all know the type, right? His self-loving character was written to a T.
Love Everlasting is another winner, right from it’s fresh looking cover to the very last page. The subplot is one many of us have been touched by, and in my opinion, was handled with care without being sensationalized.
So take a chance on Love Everlasting. After all, life is about taking chances, even if there are no guarantees.
Darby is many things. She's a vet-nurse, she's a community theater actress, a daughter, a sister, a full-fledged clutz, and a member of the Boobie Sisters. She's a Survivor. Reid is a designer turned wedding planner for Invercargill's boutique bridal shop, Next Stop Vegas. Darby has recently been cast as Ugly Step-Sister #2 and Wardrobe Director for the theater's production of Cinderella and MacKenna, owner of Next Stop Vegas has agreed to donate the material for costumes if they can convince Reid to make them. Since the production of Cinderella and it's accompanying ball are fundraising for a cancer charity near to Darby's heart she's a woman on a mission to get the man. If she finds her Prince Charming along the way, even better.
No one does characters better than Tracey Alvarez. Each one has an attention to detail that brings them to life. They are as genuine and real to the reader as the people you work with or live next door to. Darby and Reid are no exceptions. Darby is cringe-worthy at times. Her mouth and her body get away from her. We can all relate. Reid is as charming as he can be. As customary in one of Tracey's stories, each main character had a set of good, supportive friends to help along the way. I especially loved the cameo appearances from my island friends. And how I loved Duke! For the first time ever, I didn't immediately fall in love with the planned couple. Plenty of push-pull, plenty of humor and friendship but I didn't feel the normal chemistry. It was overshadowed by hesitation and fear. However, by the end, it had become the fairy tale I wanted and the HEA I dreamed of.
This is a beautiful story of finding the right person to love. Darby and Reid are not looking for love when their lives collide, and even though they both try to fight their feelings love has a way of winning in the end. There are lots of emotions in this book and the topic of cancer is handled in a thoughtful and respectful way, anyone who has had a relative or loved one with cancer can relate, but it has lots of fun upbeat moments. A great read with a cameo appearance from characters from an earlier series.
Having been on the sidelines with someone who has had triple negative breast cancer, this story uplifted me in a different way than most romance books. Like Darby, the heroine in the book, my family member is a survivor so I related to Darby more than most. The story and writing is Alvarez good and the characters are wonderful. I loved that the heroine wasn’t perfect and I loved that she was comfortable in that. The fairy tale twist was cute. A lot of fun and a great romance.
Love Everlasting maybe decades long or it may just be until cancer takes you away. This could be a really depressing book, but even though these characters have been ravaged by the effects of cancer on themselves or their loved ones they have persevered. Can they take one more step and take a chance on each other? This touching story is relatable to all of us one way or another, but it is also a sweet sexy romance with so many “feels”. Love, loved it.
This is a great rom-com that also touches on the topic of breast cancer (victims, survivors, family).
Darby is part of a community theater group that's putting on Cinderella, and the proceeds go to re-roof a house for cancer patients to stay at while they're getting treatment. Another actress ropes her friend MacKenna into providing fabric for the costumes, and she suggests asking Reid to help sew them. Darby asks him.
I'll admit part of the draw for me to this book is its setting in New Zealand. I got a little bit of the different vocabulary, and I got to read about Lake Wakatipu. I was disappointed I didn't get more, but it doesn't detract from the story. The characters were well done. Both Darby and Reid struggle with fear, and grow in trust. I love that they both know life won't be a fairy tale, and their story is still worth reading.
This author creates funny situations and dialogue! Darby's ad lib skills are stupendous!
Do I need to read books before this one: no Would I read more of the series: yes, this author is funny Cliffhanger: no
POSSIBLE TRIGGERS Sex: nudity, multiple sex scenes Language: 3 F words, 30 Lord's name in vain, 8 S words Violence: unwanted kisses, report of people who died from cancer (not violent, but is a trigger)
FAVORITE QUOTE(S) “I’d like to say the cats don’t judge me if I want a break from human interaction or if I’m having a bad hair day, but cats are the most judgmental animals on earth. They just keep their smug opinions to themselves.” “Unlike dogs, so I’ve heard.” “Yeah. Dogs see humans through permanent rose-tinted glasses.”
“Not all unicorns have horns and sparkle, hon. On the outside, some look just like an ordinary horse.”
CRITIQUE (spoilers) I don't understand why both Darby and Reid think it's risky for Reid to love a breast cancer survivor.
If you haven't read Tracey Alvarez before, Love Everlasting would make a great place to start. Its hero, Reid, is best friends with Saying I Do's MacKenna; it's very much Reid and Darby's book, though, and stands alone very well.
Though there's some heavy duty issues here--ramifications of breast cancer play a pretty big role throughout--there's also an undeniably light-hearted feel to this book too, and many of the situations that Darcy and Reid found themselves in had me LOL-ing throughout. A menagerie of unique animals didn't hurt either... ;)
It's hard to argue that Reid ad Darby aren't meant to be together--it's clear by the end of the book that literally every one of their friends agrees--which for much of the book make it a delicious read. The black moment, though, seems to come from out of nowhere, and was more than a little aggravating. (Things were going so well! Why was *that* the moment that needed to end it all...?) Still, Darby and Reid manage to pull themselves back from the brink by the end, and their HEA is both sweet and satisfying.
Looking forward to Ms. Alvarez's next book!
Rating: 4 stars / B+
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I thought that this book turned out to be a good balance between lightheartedness and heavy hearted. This book is a good one to read on how to handle your fear of being in a relationship that you know might be short from the start. Darby has had breast cancer and is now on the road to being cancer free, but in the back of her mind is the knowledge that cancer could come back at any time. Darby is involved in a production of Cinderella to help raise money for Sunflower House which is a place for women with cancer to stay and recover. Darby thinks that she wants to be with Hugh, Prince Charming, and tries to gain his attention. Then she is asked to meet with Reid and get him to help design and sew the costumes for the production with her help as Darby knows how to do some sewing. At the first meeting with Reid, Darby's skirt splits and shows a little more than Darby would like, but Reid is nice about it and offers her a pair of his sweats while he fixes her skirt. The chemistry between the two builds from there, but Reid backs off some when he first learns that Darby is recovering from cancer, because it hasn't been that long since he watched his mother die from it. Fortunately, one's heart doesn't always listen to one's head and love blooms amidst the fear and second guesses, however for that love to continue to grow each person has to confront their fear and choose whether to battle it or give in to it. Read this wonderful story and see what Darby and Reid decide to do.
Some unusual main characters, with some capital "C" fears, show how important living in the now is in Love Everlasting.
I say unusual, since we don't normally see a breast cancer survivor as a main character. I also say unusual, since we don't normally see super-talented men as master sewers. Both Darby and Reid may not typically be the people we see in romance, but they didn't feel awkward or out of place in their story.
There was a lot of push-and-pull between Darby and Reid. Darby, not wanting to have an actual relationship after what happened with her partner when she was diagnosed with cancer. Reid, his mother's death from cancer, still has a lot of heartache and isn't looking to add to it. Both have some good and personal reasons for not wanting to get involved with each other. No matter how good those reasons, there is a definite draw when they're around each other, and lingering memories and yearnings when they're apart.
My one big disappointment was how Darby caused the climax/tension. How she chose to "protect" Reid irked me. I wasn't really sure I believed it, especially since she was so determined to not let cancer rule her life, how she wanted to live today and not get bogged down in things that didn't matter. The problem is, Reid matters! I felt like she hung him out to dry a bit and was pretty annoyed with her. That being said, when she pulled on her big girl pants and faced her fears, I was really cheering for her.
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book.
All of Tracy Alvarez’s books are 4-5 star reads for me and this one was no exception. I loved Darcy’s strength and conviction. She is a breast cancer survivor who refuses to let it dictate her life. It’s not something she hides nor is it something that she puts out there.
Reid is a character we’ve met before. To help out a friend, he sews the costumes for Darcy’s production of Cinderella. As they work together, sparks develop. However, once Reid finds out Darcy had cancer, he begins to question if a relationship can happen. He’s been through the ravaging effects cancer can have on a loved one and he’s not sure his heart can handle it again.
I really liked Darcy and Reid. So why not a 5 star rating? There were some things that happened that came from no where and didn’t include any further explanation (ie the car getting broken into. What?! When did that happen? Who did it? We never find out). The story didn’t flow as smoothly as others have and for that, I deducted a star.
I want to thank Tracey and Rose for the opportunity to read and review! I received this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is quite a quirky story. Darby had breast cancer at twenty four, four years earlier, and had to have a mastectomy. She meets Reid at a wedding, and there is an instant attraction between them, but she is terrified to get involved, it will be a while before she can say she is cancer free, and she believes the cancer will return; and she doesn’t want anyone to be forced to look after her. Reid has a somewhat similar problem, his mother died of breast cancer, he nursed her through it and his heart was broken when she died. Circumstances set them working together in the evenings, and they become dear friends, then more, but both are trying to stop themselves falling in love.
A lot of the back-story is very thought-provoking, and there are lots of highs and lows, very funny moments, and sad times too. One character is quite unpleasant and you want to cheer when Darby gives him his come-uppance. This is a lovely story, about two lonely people who need each other. Very enjoyable.
This was an entertaining, sweet read. Reid is a character that we've seen briefly in previous books by Ms Alvarez in a supporting role. Here he takes center stage as our romantic lead. His lovely, if somewhat awkward co star is Darby. From a cute first meeting, to budding friendship, and struggles of acceptance Reid and Darby were both characters that I genuinely liked and wanted to spend time with. Ms Alvarez has a unique talent for taking serious issues and addressing them in a way that makes the reader think a little. Seeing how breast cancer had impacted both Reid and Darby and the ways that it continued to influence their decisions was something that I might not have considered before meeting these two. Love Everlasting is a stand alone work that connects to previous works published by Ms Alvarez and loyal readers will see some familiar faces. New readers don't need to worry though and you could easily pick up this well written piece and enjoy. Ms Alvarez is an automatic one click author for me and this just confirms it!
When I first read that Darby had cancer, I was concerned that this would be a depressing book. Then learning Reid's mom had passed away from the same thing, I was really conflicted about continuing the book.
I should have known that Tracey Alvarez would have taken a difficult subject and turned out a sweet, sensual, sexy romance full of emotion.
Neither Darby nor Reid were expecting anything when they started to work together. There was an attraction between them that was very obvious. Darby had convinced herself that Hugh was the guy she wanted to the point that her attraction to Reid confused her a little.
I loved the way Reid was supportive and protective of Darby. I did have an issue with Darby making decisions for Reid about their relationship. I understood her reasoning, but it did irritate me a bit.
I also liked that we got to visit some of the Due South friends. Another sweet, sexy romance with a foundation of friendship, love, loyalty, support, and a HEA.
I voluntarily read and reviewed the Advanced Reader Copy.
Ms. Alvarez has a talent for writing about normal everyday people that grab our hearts. Darby is a slightly wacky cancer survivor. She loves bed taking the stage in the local theatre productions but dreams of being the leading lady. She’d love it if her Prince Charming would swoop in & express his everlasting love. She doesn’t think it will ever happen to her though.
Reid enjoys his job masterminding the organization of weddings & other events. He’s used to “bridezilla’s” but they still manage to surprise him. His boss has volunteered him to assist with the costumes for the production of Cinderella in exchange for publicity. If he has to work with Darby, this may not be so bad.
This was an enchanting story about the right couple meeting & their courtship. Reid has to get past his cynical feelings regarding marriages. His job really doesn’t let him see people at their best. Darby needs to realize she IS a cancer survivor & life is better if you live for today, instead of worrying about what might happen. This story has the right amount of romance, clumsiness & drama.
Tracey Alvarez has once again written an amazing story that transcends the "traditional" romance genre and yet more than delivers on love, laughter, and true love. Darby Livingston is many things; a vet tech, wannabe actress, and self proclaimed klutz. She is also a breast cancer survivor but doesn't allow it to define her. She is currently the wardrobe designer for the production of Cinderella. So, enter Reid Hudson, the totally hot wedding planner from Next Stop, Vegas ( remember him from Saying I Do?) He is roped in to making the costumes for the play and thus Darby and Reid begin their dance. The theme of cancer weaves it's way through the story and affects both these wonderful characters. This story touches on so many levels of life, loss, and fear. Tracey has woven a deeply thoughtful, yet engaging story of two people falling in love in spite of themselves. It is truly wonderful to read and watch things unfold in their relationship, in the play, and with their friends. I am so impressed with Tracey's gift of writing romance novels that touch something deep inside all of us, and that is hope; for true love, a happy life, and good friends. I highly recommend this book, and ALL her previous books, for a deeply satisfying tie.
Love Everlasting provides the reader with everything you could ask for; romance, comedy, excellent character development, all while dealing with the VERY serious and long term effects of living with breast cancer! Ms. Alvarez's WICKED sense of humor, not to mention many of her unique turn-of-phrases, will doubtlessly leave you belly laughing as deeply as they did me.😜
Some of my favorite exchanges include: Darby sniffed. “You’ve obviously never cuddled a hundred and thirty pound dog on your lap because he was terrified of his own farts. Wookie was adorable. I didn’t stand a chance.”
An analogy I've NEVER heard before but found to be nonetheless HIGHLY accurate and entertaining: “your face has got what I like to call a post-coital baboon-butt glow.”
All in all, a delightfully entertaining story that's sure to keep the reader unwilling to put it down and anxious to discover what's coming next!😃
Darby is a cancer survivor with a bit of spunk and attitude. She knows what she wants and goes all out to get it. But Hugh is a playboy, and while he plays Prince Charming in the pantomime Cinderella, alongside her ugly stepsister character, Darby has the hours for him. Reid, a wedding planner, and sew-er of bridal gowns, is reluctantly roped into doing the costumes for the play, and Darby offers to assist him. What develops is a fairytale romance, with a twist. I cried, I argued, I pleaded with Darby and Reid as I read through the story, wanting to bang their heads together in order for them to see sense. This story will bring out all the feels, including a desperate desire to see love conquer all...and everyone keep their shoes. Ms Alvarez writes compelling characters, set against spectacular backdrops of New Zealand's Southern Coast. I love her mix of humour and romance, along with tearjerking honesty.
I love Ms Alvarez's books. Set in the beautiful country of New Zealand, her stories not only bring love, warmth and joy to her readers, they also make her readers yearn to see New Zealand with her descriptions of this beautiful country. Love Everlasting has the honour of being one of my most favourite book of Ms Alvarez. Darby is a cancer survivor and she is a strong and courageous woman. Reid, being a guy who sews wedding dress, may give the impression that he is gay but he is such an amazing guy. Having lost his mother to breast cancer, you would think that the last thing he wanted was to be saddled with another woman who had breast cancer. But Ms Alvarez's story teaches us that love knows no bounds and love overcomes it all.
** I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own
4.5 stars A very moving romance about a twenty-something breast cancer survivor and the man she's afraid to love because of her uncertainty that her recovery will hold. Reid, the hero, is manly and yet he's a whiz at the sewing machine! Plus I fell for the heroine's doggy Duke and loved the fairytale lived on the stage of a community Cinderella production while the story off-stage is so centered on the harsh reality of rebuilding lives post-cancer for survivors and family members alike.
Plus, I love the setting of this romance series at the far southern end of New Zealand. Good, strong characters, both leads and their supporting cast of friends and family (and a conceited jerk or two who, in contrast, make the hero and heroine all the more attractive).
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Darby is a pet loving vet tech and wannabe actress who has volunteered to be the wardrobe designer, along with her small role, for the town's amateur production of Cinderella in order to raise money for cancer. She's a four year breast cancer survivor who wants to give back. With her limited sewing skills, she asks/begs Reid, a costume designer with mad sewing skills to make the costumes.
Amidst their very poignant backstories - love, loss and a fear that often immobilized them, Ms. Alvarez has written a heartwarming story with a charming hunky hero and a heroine who is quirky, klutzy and such a loving human being. Tracey's dialogue is unbeatable and I love the cover! Great book and I can't wait to read another. I highly recommend it!
I’ve said over and over again, this author absolutely slays me with her books. Every single one of them so well written, it just sucks you in from the moment you start reading til the very last word.
Love Everlasting deals with a pretty heavy subject, breast cancer, and for those of us who have loved ones and good friends who are currently fighting the brave battle, it really hits home, but damn if it wasn’t yet another incredible masterpiece from this author. I literally fell in love with this couple. Reid is the wedding planner/seamstress that has you squirming in your seat, there’s no question about his manhood, he’s sex on a stick, and you just melt with his presence and tragic past. Darby is the vet/local theater actor/breast cancer survivor, who is starring in the local production of Cinderella. The cast needs someone to make their costumes for this very special event, and Reid is just the person Darby talks into doing it, but there’s a reason Reid accepts, he’s hot over Darcy. This couple is probably one of my favorites, and that’s saying a lot given I love all of the characters this author comes up with, but these two are something special. The fear one has with cancer, any type really, always leaves doubt when it comes to love. Will the person stick with them through thick and thin, will they still love me when this horrible disease takes everything decent from my body, will I be loved again, all of it comes out in this very emotional, funny, and heartbreaking story. I literally could not put it down, it’s that good. Secondary characters are equally incredible, especially the Boobie Sisters! Loved all of Darby’s special needs animals, everything just came together in a nice neat little package that you will absolutely love.
Reid was a side character in a previous book and I am so glad he got his own book!!! Darby is adorable and quit sassy - loved her. She just doesn't see herself like Reid and her friends do. I didn't really understand how anyone could see her as the "ugly stepsister". Reid has an outside obstacle to over come - well one that some put on him. These two have sparks flying at first sight!!! Loved their internal thoughts concerning each other and found myself laughing out loud. There is something that could keep them from falling forever. The ending was so sweet and made me smile. There are explicit moments in this book so beware. I requested a copy of this book these thoughts are my own.
4 1/2 stars I have really come to enjoy the novels of Tracey Alvarez set in way south New Zealand. This is set in Invercargill near Stewart Island. Darcy Livingstone is an aspiring actor, veterinary assistant and breast cancer survivor. As wardrobe mistress she needs costume help and meets Reid Hudson, wedding planner and tailor extraordinaire. They both have a soft spot for the local cancer support house that is sponsoring the play. They work a lot together with tingles along the way, but they really are reluctant to take a chance. The interplay and hesitation go back and forth with them. I truly enjoyed the book except for some unexplained instances that left me scratching my head that costs a half point. I hope you too will enjoy this great story in south New Zealand; I surely did.
Five starts don’t do justice to this amazing, powerful, soulful and beautiful love and live’s story. Darby and Reid will make you laugh out loud, cry out loud and fall in love all over again. Beacuse the greatest risk to die it’s to live. And that’s what Reid will show Darby with his love for this beautiful, funny, strong woman who survived a breast cancer four years ago but who is afraid to fall in love and be the cause of grief and pain to someone for loving her back. I couldn’t put the book down until the end. Thank you TRACEy for this wonderful love’s story. I’ m sure it was a tough one to write.
