Silent Movies é uma excelente introdução ao período do cinema mudo (expressão problemática para caracterizar um universo de filmes que não eram exibidos em silêncio, mas eram acompanhados de música). Vi muito poucos filmes (longas-metragens) deste período (cerca de 70), com pena minha. Os dois que vi este ano porque foram repostos nas salas francesas (Les trois lumières, de Fritz Lang, e Our Hospitality, de Buster Keaton) são grandes filmes. O livre privilegia o cinema americano, que quase sempre esteve à frente dos outros. Depois da primeira guerra o cinema europeu despertou e conseguiu propor grandes obras e artistas, mas estes foram logo atraídos por Hollywood. A leitura deste álbum confirmou que o essencial eu já sabia (estrelas, autores, correntes, obras de referência, etc.) mas confirmou também que desconheço quase tudo... Tenho de ficar mais atento. 4,5/5

This is a WONDERFUL book for people who haven't had much exposure to silent cinema. Some of the narrative subscribes to silent movie mythology. But my goodness, it's worth it just for the excellent photographs. Moderately recommended.

Lovely & informative & chock-full of pictures. Yay, birthday gift from 2008! (I always read the books that are given to me. Eventually.)
