The author did a great job with this story. She has a gift for storytelling as the book read like a movie script. The reason why I reserved the last star is because, I love a good redemption story and would have loved to know that Christian Tate, after letting her go and realizing that she was indeed a person would have gone home and started to work towards freeing his slaves. Also I find it incredible that after Thomas saved his life, he let him get imprisoned. Thomas was really a great example of unconditional love. He wanted her to be free above all else and realized that even in Maine with his family she wouldn’t be. The other thing that I missed was that for me the ending was a bit rushed. How did she make it to Canada, what does she do now, how did he survive the camp and got freed? Lastly what did their daughter looked like and how did their relationship worked out in Freeport. Was it all they dreamed about?
From page one it captured my attention, I couldn't wait to dive in and see where this story takes me. Boy did it take me: I was transported to a dark and twisted time for African American yet to know that out of darkness came the tender, shockingly beautiful love story of insurmountable sacrifices and compromises. Ms Geffen did a superb job of creating such strong likable, diverse characters. Also the supporting characters, dialogue, and setting were displayed in such a realistic and unyielding way that the readers feel as if they're reliving a remarkable love story that is told first hand from the writer's point of view. I highly recommend this incredible story of struggle, passion, love, persecution, perseverance and freedom.
I’ll tell you what, there was never a dull moment in this book. The pacing was great. But there was something missing in this book, that few more chapters could have fixed. For example, I wish I was able to read a bit more of Charlotte and Thomas getting to know each other.
In no way do I like Christian, but him as a character is very compelling. He seemed indifferent to slavery and to the confederacy, but still lost his leg for it. His deteriorating mental state after the war. His infatuation with Charlotte. It was interesting to watch unfold. I kind of wish I saw a bit more of it…
This was an entertaining story that kept a steady pace from the very start. The writer paints us a forbidden love between two people who met under strenuous circumstances. The story.gives us somewhat true look inside the dark side of a horrible time in history. The pulse pounding moments are good and the moments between the two main characters is sweet. This was a good story that didn't stall you with slot of words but with just enough to keep you interested.
Wow..... Thomas and Charlotte’s love story wasn’t easy but Thomas proved his love time and time again. Ms. Jewel did a great job of bringing these two together amongst a terrible time .
A pleasant change of pace. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It was not over sexed and the author took time to develop the characters. The only flaw was a few grammatical errors.
Very tragic but adventurous. Great villains but better heroes. Great read for lovers of history and romance! I would love to read Sidney's story, as she seemed interesting and worthy of more development. Well done!
This book was so so good. It was love, hate, happy, sad. Suspenseful Everything a good read was made of. My heart is still pounding from the suspense and happiness
