Spoilers
A generous two stars instead of one, because I'm just so happy the series has finally come to an end. All I need now is the last Lux installment to come out and then I won't ever have to read another JLA book again. I don't actually have that much of an issue with JLA's writing, it's just that her characters and plots are way too predictable and cheesy for my liking.
-Yea, I'm not a fan of the Covenant series, I'm only reading it because 1. I like to complete any series I've started (even if it's rubbish) and 2. I actually quite enjoy the Covenant world. But it has to be said the Covenant world is more or less exactly the same as the Vampire Academy world but instead of vampires/dhampirs/strigoi, it's all about greek gods/pures/half-bloods/daimons. So yea, I'm not impressed with the copying but since I loved the VA world, it's no surprise that I also enjoy the Covenant one.
-What's what: Alex nearly killed by Ares (who's evul and wants war or some BS), Apollo manages to rescue and heal her. Alex whines about everything (as usual), Aiden and Alex act cheesy, Seth returns and acts regretful (fucker), everyone forgets about him being responsible for all the death and destruction. Aiden and Alex declare their undying love for each other even though they're only teenagers, Ares wants everyone at war because of reasons, Alex and the gang need to stop him. Alex has to absorb Seth's powers and become the God Killer/even more of a speshul snowflake so she can kill Ares.
-Alex was still as whiny, lame, and irritating as ever. She thought every little thing revolved around her, I was sick of how self-centered and sorry she felt for herself. Yea, she got her arse kicked by Ares but what did she expect? He's an ancient war god and she's not. Why was she so ashamed about that? Even another god couldn't have stopped him so why did she act like she failed? Ugh, she just liked to wallow in self pity.
What was most annoying about Alex was her fucked up friendship with Seth. He teamed up with Ares and the bad guys, he caused an apocalypse of sorts, he killed LOADS of people, he didn't care about anyone but his own mummy/daddy issues, he did so many bad things with ease and without feeling any guilt. Yet Alex still acted like Seth wasn't a bad guy. Silly cow.
-Why was Alex so sure Seth wasn't playing her when he said he was no longer following Ares? He'd betrayed her once before and she didn't see it coming then, so why not again? There was no evidence that Seth was telling the truth - Alex having a feeling that she could just trust him was bullshit. Okay, Apollo later confirmed Seth was being honest but before then Alex just believed everything he told her. She was so dumb.
-Seth didn't redeem himself whatsoever. He was responsible for the deaths of thousands, he wanted to take over the world, kill more people, and make everyone suffer. Him changing his mind and not doing evul things anymore didn't erase all his past evul doings… He was irredeemable. And I was disgusted that Alex and everyone else let him off the hook after a good deed or two. He didn't deserve to be forgiven — he was a vile, murdering, selfish fucker. It makes no difference that he was somewhat influenced by Lucien and Ares, he still had his own mind. He alone decided to be an evul killer. He should have died a horrible death, instead he was made out to be a hero at the end. Ugh.
-Aiden was an okay character, he was a bit dull though. His dedication to Alex was sweet but I really didn't understand what he saw in her.
-Alex's one liners were still lame.
-All the ancient gods acted/talked like teens.
-I wish heroines would stop wrapping their arms around their waist whenever they feel bad. I mean, who does that in real life?!
-I was glad Alex didn't turn out pregnant. I'm sick of all the teenage heroines getting pregnant at the end of a series.
-I didn't expect the weirdness between Apollo and Deacon to be down to them hooking up. That was the only 'twist' I enjoyed.
-Alex was always surrounded by guys (Aiden, Seth, Marcus, Apollo, Ares). All the secondary female characters were either in the background and/or played very small or unimportant roles.
When Alex thought she was going to die, she had regrets, all of which revolved around the guys in her life. There wasn't one female character she thought of because she didn't give a fuck about making connections with any of them, and the few she did connect with were all dead. Nice.
-When Alex was possessed by the evil twin gods she kept banging on about feeling/being different but she didn't actually seem any different from before.
-If Perses had been asleep for centuries/millennia then why would he speak in modern day slang?
-What was with all the tightening, popping, spasming, and throbbing of jaws? It was as if that was the only way that JLA could convey a character's anger.
-I was sick of the repeated mentions of Aiden's eyes. I didn't care what colour they were or what colour they changed to depending on his mood!
-All the secondary female characters that were Alex's age ended up dead. It was ridiculous.
-I hope there isn't a Seth spin off, he's an awful character.
-Ugh, Alex was already a speshul snowflake but she was made into an even bigger one when she turned into a demigod at the end. I would have preferred if she turned fully mortal instead, at least then she wouldn't be as much of a Mary Sue.
Oh and Aiden turned into a demigod too. Why couldn't he stay as he was? He could have still been with Alex. Sure, he would have aged but at least then the ending would have been less nauseating.
-Dumb quote of the book:
Luke blinked, and anger, hurt, and dozen of other violent emotions still infused his cheeks, but he climbed into the back seat with Deacon.
I didn't know someone's cheeks could convey that much emotion.
All in all, it was rubbish. The heroine was a Mary Sue, the hero was a cliched bore, the romance was cheesy, the plot was predictable, the world was decent (but since it was a copy of VA, it doesn't get any points for that), the secondary characters were likeable but were given no depth because everything was all about Alex and her issues. Ugh.
