As someone who adores the 60s and 70s art and counterculture scene, this is a must read. I forgot about this book—until I got re-immersed in the world of John Waters, Patti Smith, and Andy Warhol.

I think no matter what side of the arts you are in, if you have any interest in the 60s and 70s, this is a really good roadmap to the era. It’s salacious, creative, catchy, fun—daring in its questioning the boundaries of art.

The interview style format of the book is something I find amazing. I think it is a really unconventional and risky way of telling a portrait of an era—however, I think it is the perfect lens for the subject matter. The book’s interview structure symbolises the lyrics of music, encapsulates the electronic medium of punk music, and alludes to the events of the time—for instance, Brigid Berlin’s tape recordings.

While I read this in junior high, I recently felt so happy to see this book appearing in the artsy/scene-y bookstores in nyc.
