"By living in communion with God and knowing His Word, we can actually increase in discernment." (Jane Hamon, Discernment)

This book tackles the rare gift of spiritual discernment, or as the Bible calls it: the gift of "discerning of spirits" or "distinguishing between spirits" (See 1 Corinthians 12:8-10).

It covers many facets of this gift, including:

● Discerning the times
● Having a discerning heart
● Discernment to lead
● Discernment to build
● Discerning the Spirit of God
● Discerning angels
● Discerning demons
● Discerning the human heart
● Discernment and spiritual warfare
● Discernment and intercession to transform territories

The author talks about how Jesus had discernment and operated in this gift; she says: "Jesus operated in discernment and never fell into the traps of the Pharisees. His discernment always allowed Him to be one step ahead of them in their schemes. He did not resist the Holy Spirit's insight or knowledge; He embraced the gift. He discerned the plan and purposes of heaven and His assignment in the earth. He discerned the thoughts of people. He also discerned the operation of demons and cast them out."

The chapter that spoke the most to me personally was Chapter 3: The Issachar Anointing with its premise Scripture being:
"The children of Issachar...had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do." (See 1 Chronicles 12:32, KJV)
She says that "the Issachar anointing is having the ability to discern and identify spiritual times and seasons and know how to respond." She says that not only did the tribe of Israel "see and know", but they also discerned strategies for how Israel was to position herself to receive a blessing. She says that when we determine a new time or season has been discerned, we would do well to come into agreement with the declaration and align our lives to receive from God, so that time and season does not pass us by. Therefore, we have an active role to play after we have discerned the new time and season, and to prepare for it, so we can benefit from it.

As you read this book, the anointing of the gift of spiritual discernment will come upon you, and you will begin to discern things in your life, your family, your church, and your world, so you can have an upper hand and have the victory!

I read this book along with the audio version; and I am glad that I did as there were many Greek and Hebrew words that the audio version helps the reader in pronouncing.

Let me start off my staying that if you have a strong desire to grow in discernment, this is the book for you! Have your highlighter ready! This book will bring you into maturity as you digest the Word of God through every page and the testimonies shared within the pages.

When I started reading this book, I had somewhat of an understanding and distinguishing between spirits. This gift is not something that is talked about very much in the Body of Christ. However, when I was reading through each chapter, I gained more confidence through the Holy Spirit and what he had been speaking to me. I no longer felt like I was going crazy, but was brought clarity and confirmation of the things I was discerning.

Discernment by Jane Hamon is a book to equip the saints for such a time as this. As the Body of Christ it is of great importance that we are not only discerning spirits but the times that we are in! Hamon covers a lot of ground throughout this book. She talks about discerning times, angels, demons, and why it is important to grow in discernment for every Child of God.
If you are looking to grow in discernment and have a deeper understanding of the spiritual realm, Discernment by Jane Hamon is for you. Through the scriptures provided and the testimonies she has shared, it will open your eyes and bring confidence through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Overall, I give this book a 5/5 and it will be headed to my ‘favorites’ book shelf. I will be rereading this time and time again as a refresher. This book is a gift of ‘karios’ for the Body of Christ

[Note:  This book was provided free of charge by Chosen Books.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.]

I don't know who Jane Hamon is or who ordained her father-in-law to be a bishop, but I found this book to be strangely entertaining.  I don't think that was the aim of the book, but it certainly did achieve that.   Given that Pentecostals (and I assume the author is one) care so much about the gifts of the Spirit and spiritual warfare, subjects this book gets into a lot, it is little surprise that discernment should be such an important subject within this book.  The author doesn't really make it clear, though, that she has the sort of discernment that would make her an expert.  Not only is there a heavy odor of nepotism in the way that she has a ministry at all given her modest grasp of the Bible but she frequently shows in this book a tendency to enjoy word games and wrangling over definitions that is not necessarily very discerning.  This is a book that tries very hard to show itself as an essential guide, but it is far too personal to be essential for all of its author's edit.  That doesn't make this book not worth reading because it is, but it is not worth reading in precisely the way that the author intends.

This book is almost 250 pages long and it is divided into 14 chapters.  The book begins with a foreword by Dr. Chuck Pierce as well as an introduction by the author.  After that the author discusses what it means to hear the voice of God (1) and how to discern the times (2), which leads her into an entire chapter on something the author refers to as the Isaachar anointing (3).  After this the author discusses the importance of having a discerning heart (4) and having the discernment to lead (5) and build (6) in religious and spiritual matters.  After that the author discusses discerning the Spirit of God (7) as opposed to demons, discerning angels (8), and also discerning demons (9), whom the author shows a marked tendency to name personally, something the Bible refrains from.  The author discusses the importance of discerning the human heart (10) as well as the relationship between discernment and that favorite Pentecostal subject of spiritual warfare (11).  Finally, the author closes the book with chapters on discernment and intercession to transform territories (12), discerning and identifying strongholds of demonic influence (13), and having eyes to see and ears to hear (14), after which there is an index.

This book is decidedly odd, and it shows the author to have what appears to be a particularly Pentecostal interest in making up concepts that only appear very briefly in the Bible.  This is by no means uniquely a Pentecostal habit, it should be noted, but it is something that this book and many others written by fellow Pentecostals shows.  In this case the author spends a lot of time talking about a supposed Issachar anointing based on a single scripture about some people in Issachar having the ability to discern the signs of the times and then runs with it to excess.  As odd as this is, it is certainly better than the author's occasional accusations of others as being demonically inspired, that's for sure.  One might have thought that an editor would have read this book and had the author tone down some of the accusations of those who used to attend the same congregations, but no, she goes right out and calls those who have sought to build up their own fellowships and their own congregations as being demonically influenced with a spirit of rebellion.  In reading a book like this it is hard not to wonder who it was that gave the author that kind of authority to make those pronouncements in the first place.

this book is quite out there, and I have yet to experience much of what was described (if I ever will, and if I even believe it), but most importantly it offered a new and profound lens to view Scripture through: spiritually.

it addressed many Bible verses on spiritual warfare, angels, and demons, which I had previously not given much attention to, but now really pushed me to wrestle with them. prior to this book, I only saw through the natural. now, I am challenged to reimagine a world through a whole new dimension, and reconcile my mental model where the spiritual and physical co-exist.

overall, I’m very grateful this book prompted me to live more in a way where my spiritual beliefs are functional in the everyday too. also helpful frameworks for discernment expanding beyond spirits but also timing, people involved, and strategy.

that said, I also had some skepticism. there were some stretches in categorizing and naming spirits eg. “python spirits” (Acts 16:16 greek translation of “spirit of divination” being rooted in python) which I’m not convinced is biblically backed.

at the end, she also started randomly referring to disney (ursula in little mermaid, serpent in jungle book) to illustrate evil manifestations, which made me skeptic. though, it was helpful to see how she identifies qualities of spirits contrary to God.

someone she cited multiple times and seems to revere, dutch sheets, I researched and has a questionable agenda of christian fundamentalism and “new apostolic reformation” (NAR), which attempts to become a fifth branch within christendom alongside catholicism, protestantism, etc. with a strong emphasis on prophetic + apostolic.

2 of their beliefs include 1) extra-biblical revelation (going beyond Scripture) and 2) great transfer of wealth (prosperity gospel), so this is concerning. feels like a mixed political agenda. I think this highlights why more “extreme” charismatics receive skepticism.

I think I’ll stick to finishing my Bible moving forward

This is one of those books I wanted to give a higher rating but couldn't. I REALLY liked the personal stories/experiences and the corresponding advice on the issue of discernment. Those were the strengths of the book, in my opinion.

I love to read stories of "doers" and pioneers in the Christian world who move out in faith and make a difference, especially those who engage in the supernatural realm. Sadly, many Christians are content to stay in the realm of the theory and classroom where it's safe and comfortable. And they often criticize and condemn the doers because not all that the doers do lines up with their theories and traditions.

That said, while I agreed with some of the author's doctrines, there were other things I didn't agree with...her escatology, for example. And some things she put forth I felt needed more biblical support than was given.

I really enjoyed this book. So much good stuff in here and it kept my interest.
I honestly am not sure why some non-fiction books captivate me and others I can barely concentrate. Thankfully I could fully concentrate on this book.
I appreciate the author being real with some of her skepticism of things she witnessed. I definitely struggle at times with this. She also addresses people having a religious spirit and I see that often which stifles the Holy Spirit.
Overall, if you are looking for greater discernment in the Spirit I highly recommend this book.

In Discernment, Jane Hamon writes about the spiritual gift that is probably the least talked about: Discerning of Spirits. She shares many stories and lessons she has learned in her years in ministry. Through fourteen chapters, she covers topics like: Hearing the Voice of God, Discerning the Times, The Issachar Anointing, Discerning Angels, Discernment and Spiritual Warfare, and more. This book is a must read on the gift of discernment. I highly recommend this book.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

*FAV BOOK TO DATE ON DISCERNMENT!*
I finished this book so fast!!!! First book I’ve been addicted to in a while. I LOVE her perspective on discernment and her honest journey through it. It reminded me of Jennifer Eivas work (unsure who was first but this doesn’t matter) but I related to her and found her even more impactful (which is impressive because I love JE). I also found her humbleness so refreshing. NOW GO READ THIS!

Discernment: get 😁

SO much meat in this book! I’ve listened to Audible version multiple times but there is just so much to digest I wanted to read and take notes.

I will be reading this multiple times as well. It goes places you might not consider is relevant to “discernment”… and then there you are!

A book for our times

I found the author's journey into understanding this gift encouraging especially her negative reactions as they mirrored my own. It set me up to be teachable and appreciate why spiritual discernment is not an optional extra but a two edged sword. Thank you

Awesome read

Very revenant information along with realistic expectation and real life issues that come with the gift that the writer Herself has had to deal with. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn more about discernment and how to walk in it a healthy way.
