I Give Up....
This is the 1st series in the genre that I felt held true promise at the start, I gave all I have as far as belief goes, and I had to abandon anyway.
The 1st book wasn’t perfect but it was totally entertaining. Like a great B movie! And the infected - so unique with a ton of potential to go in a million directions to carry the storyline over countless episodes. Two main characters who are absolutely likable.
Unfortunately, the bits that made the 1st book great just didn’t make it into the 2nd book. Including the afflicted. They were backdrops to the human interactions. And our main characters. They became inconsistent. Especially Turk. They went from being smart, strong, top of their game professionals and survivors- to guys who make stupid, civilian, decisions. That was sad and frustrating to experience.
I read this genre for the infected. I love them. I can understand how interactions with them can grow old later on in a series and begin to fall away to a degree. Most do. But that’s by the 4th or 5th book or beyond usually. And still, there’s generally a few good infected fight scenes. They’re—- present.
Here, by the 2nd book, it was more an, “oh yeah, btw, and I guess there must have been some infected in the woods and they attacked some people.” No rich scenes. Actually, no scenes at all.
And the storyline — to make it all the worse — tired. It’s one we’ve all read before. Which is sad because the 1st book was so cool. What a let down. And, lol, from a “B movie” type 1st book I didn’t think you could be let down!
So, after book two, I vowed to give it one, last, gasping try, and read the 3rd book.
Yeaahhhh. No. I tried. The dryness continues. This isn’t a “zombie” or “infected” series. I guess it’s just an apocalypse series. With bumbling main characters who make frustrating decisions, undeveloped and unlikable supporting characters, and stereotypical villains. *yawn*
