When McGraw’s father dies unexpectedly, the small friend group is shaken. Susan struggles to be there for McGraw, but his usual stoicism has turned into a solid wall. With McGraw at home and Susan in their empty apartment alone, Esther and Daisy have to help Susan deal with someone who doesn’t seem to be dealing. What do you do for someone you love when you have no idea what they’re going through?
I knew this would be a difficult issue to read for personal reasons. I was on a plane headed home, it was dark other than the glow of my iPad, it was a full flight, yet I decided to read. I had all the feels. As I do right now while writing this... so well done. {Heart} McGraw.
Giant Days has such a way with dealing with some of the heavier - and more real - moments in life. This issue is no exception to that. It was beautiful, respectful, and heartbreaking all in one.
I don't know what's going on in my head from one minute to the next. But I think life has to get bigger to make death seem smaller.
I just found out this series is ending soon and I'm fucking heartbroken. I've been reading Giant Days for years and I don't know what I'll do when this series is over???
On another note, I loved how this issue dealt with McGraw's grief and I love them all so much.
Once again, John Allison gives us an unexpected delight. The humour is there, but there's also depth. And the art of Max Sarin? Did you think it couldn't get better? Well, it does.
But then, Giant Days is one of my favourite series, so... judge yourself.
I usually start these all excited and talking about something going on in my life/ or what led me to pick up this book. But I have been reading this series for a very long time (it's honestly one of my favorite graphic novel series of all time and I am going to be a hot mess when I get to the last one). Anyways, this issue was a hard-hitting issue and honestly really sad at points. I am going to try to keep it as spoiler-free as possible below because it is so many issues in but I highly recommend giving this series a try if you have not yet and when you get to this issue definitely have a tissue box around!
SPOILERS AHEAD
In this issue, we see the fallout from the emergency that sprang up at the end of the last issue. (In my review of that issue, I do not think I mentioned what happened because I do not want to spoil anything for anyone who may be reading these for the first time). As things, we this emergency wrap up Susan returns home and then McGraw. However, upon his return, McGraw is not the same. In order to try to help McGraw get back to himself a little bit, Esther rents a cabin house as a gateway for the group!
This issue is definitely in my top five favorites, despite the sadness/crying that it brought on. It was amazingly drawn/illustrated, the plot in this issue was one of the best and the characters were just freaking astounding and honestly reminded me so much of them in the earlier issues (aside from McGraw but I love him so much and I am hoping he will be on the mend in the next issue but I know healing will not happen overnight from what happened). Go read this series (it may even be on your Hoopla from your local library)!
Eh, I thought this would be more McGraw-centric, with the death of his father at the end of the last issue, but it kind of skipped over the death and dealt more with the whole moving on from death, which, wasn't expected and only kind of worked. The issues lately have been kind of all over the place, like they're so concerned with what happens next, IE future jobs, etc. that they are currently doing a disservice to the characters as they are at this moment.
A sweet book... McGraw grieving alone his dad’s death, withdrawn from Susan. Esther wins essay prize for her “A Brief Social History of Pubic Hair” and uses money to rent cottage for them all to get away, purposefully to help McGraw. Esther wears floral print so that her wardrobe “doesn’t reflect the Infinite” and be gloomy; Daisy asks, “Does it hurt you to wear it?” McGraw unloads for Susan and tells Esther, “You’re a good egg.” Esther heads to London for her interview.
This issue was everything great about Giant Days. It had funny moments, it had sad moments, it had friendship and support and camaraderie. It tackled the hard topic of dealing with grief and how to support and love someone who is grieving.
I just love this series so much, it truly makes my day every month when a new issue comes out.
La vida es una montaña rusa de emociones, todo puede empeorar de un momento a otro. Te entiendo McGraw, parece que el fin se acerca más y más para Daisy, Esther y Susan.
